6. London’s Food Scene Is Now One of the Most Diverse in the World.
No matter what your primary reasons may be for planning a trip to a particular destination, food always seems to enter into the equation. Arts and culture, ancient ruins, history, and spectacular scenery always rank right up there, but especially when your plans include Europe, “I can’t wait to try the food” is bound to be spoken well before you arrive.
Italy is world renowned for pasta, bolognese, pecorino, mortadella, pizza, and wine. France for Michelin-star restaurants, bistros, French onion soup, cheeses, patisseries, regional specialties, and of course, wine. Spain? The fresh seafood and paella are to die for, along with world-class cheeses from the Basque region and Rioja and Grenache wines. And let’s not forget the incredible souvlaki, olives, grilled meats, gyros, and moussaka that Greece is known for.
Hey, wait a minute, what about famous British foods? When was the last time you suggested going out with friends or your significant other for British cuisine? Chances are this has never happened unless you are thinking about fish and chips. However, in the last couple of decades British food has improved exponentially, with the notion that it’s beige, basic, and rather bland having become outdated. Yes, you can still find traditional beef dinners with roasted potatoes and Brussels sprouts on pub and local neighborhood menus, along with bangers and mash, Yorkshire pudding, Shepherd’s pie (minced lamb), and curries, but the British palate now demands far more diverse menu options than it did just 20 years ago. And that’s great news not only for UK citizens, but for the tens of millions of international visitors who come to London each year.
6. What Exactly Is British Food?
The dining experience in London is quite different from what you might find in other cities, market towns, and villages in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which together comprise the United Kingdom, which is also known as Great Britain or “The UK”. As in countries around the world, the dining scene is far more diverse in truly international cities such as London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, or Rome. However, this doesn’t mean that fabulous food can’t be found everywhere.
The UK, and London in particular, was for the longest time considered to be an incredible vacation and business travel destination, but the food offerings were nothing to write home about. Today’s British cuisine has diversified over the years with the influx of immigrants from around the world. And that has been great news for foodies. Yes, you can still find classic dishes like the full English breakfast with eggs, sausage, bacon, beans and toast, and you certainly should try this at least once while you’re here. The same holds true for bangers and mash, pork sausages with mashed potatoes and gravy, as well as a Cornish pasty or steak and ale pie. And with a name like ‘Toad in the Hole’, how can you not try this British staple which consists of sausages served in a savory Yorkshire pudding batter?
The ‘Brits’ do it right when it comes to not being too complex or fancy when it comes to mealtime. Whether you walk into a neighborhood hole in the wall or a local pub, you are bound to find straightforward dishes prepared with what is locally fresh at that time of the year. Vegetables (just ask for ‘veg’), are always on the menu along with stews, roasts, lamb, meat pies, fresh seafood, fish and chips, and warm puddings.
If hearty comfort food and a pint or two of a local beer fit the bill, you won’t go hungry in London, or anywhere else in Great Britain.

6. Don’t Overlook Michelin’s Bib Gourmand Awarded Restaurants
Okay, I get it. Not everyone, me included, can afford to spend a month’s salary on a meal, or for that matter, wants to. But don’t we also deserve amazing food for a reasonable price? Of course we do, and Michelin recognized this with the establishment of the Bib Gourmand designation in 1997. Restaurants so-recognized are awarded a BG rating based on their high-quality cooking, terrific value (i.e., affordability), serving satisfying and far less complex meals than Michelin Star restaurants provide, and most importantly, diners leave the restaurant with a feeling of satisfaction that they just had a meal that was worth more than it cost. It isn’t often that you get to say this about a restaurant, but by choosing to eat at a Bib Gourmand awarded restaurant your chances have risen immeasurably.
Michelin is also to clear to point out that Bib Gourmand dining spots aren’t receiving a “lesser star” but are being recognized for the tremendous value and culinary excellence they provide. Click here for more on London’s 2026 Bib Gourmand honorees.
