Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is the Heart of the Metroplex
With five terminals, seven runways, more than 160 gates, an average of close to 2,000 daily departures and arrivals and encompassing 27 square miles in area (2nd in the country only to Denver Int’l) the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is an integral part of the DFW Metroplex. More than 85 million people utilize the airport annually, a staggering figure which clearly defines how economically important DFW is to the region.
DFW is the biggest hub for American Airlines, which also has its world headquarters just a few minutes south of the airport. Virtually every U.S. carrier offers service to/from DFW, with Dallas-based Southwest Airlines headquartered at and exclusively serving Dallas Love Field. The Metroplex business sector is highly diversified and home to an abundance of multinational corporations including 21 members of the Fortune 500, the fifth most in the country.
The Dallas-Fort Worth region’s more than eight million residents has attracted many foreign flag airlines to offer service from DFW, where they can also take advantage of connectivity via American’s hub to cities throughout the U.S.’s southern tier. Popular airlines serving DFW include Air France, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Lufthansa, Japan, Korean, EVA, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, and Royal Jordanian, as well as multiple Canadian, Mexican, Central and South American carriers.
With DFW’s massive amount of airline service throughout the United States and internationally, it’s no wonder that scores of hotels are located within minutes of the airport making it easy to find accommodation for an early morning departure, or to overnight following a late arrival. The airport is centrally located in the heart of the Metroplex with downtown Dallas being 20 miles away and Ft. Worth’s city center 24 miles from the terminals.
In addition to multiple highways that lead to DFW from every direction, the airport is served by light rail rapid transit from both Dallas and Ft. Worth. DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) trains serve Terminal A via the Orange Line, and service is provided via TEXRail to Terminal B with Ft. Worth Central Station being the origination point. Connections to other terminals is provided by DFW’s Terminal Link shuttle bus or the internal SkyLink rail service.

DFW was ahead of the curve when it set aside space on the airport grounds for a hotel in the facility master plan. When the airport began operations in 1974, so did the Hyatt Regency, and it has been there ever since. The hotel originally had two towers totaling 1,369 rooms, but one tower was raised in 2001 due to airport terminal expansion leaving 811 rooms in the current property. The Grand Hyatt was added in 2005 along with the new International Terminal D, and the Hyatt Place opened in 2016 still on airport property, but at the south about three miles from the terminals.

Uniquely designed with multiple terminals located on either side of Texas State Highway Spur 97, more commonly known as the International Parkway toll road that splits the airport, there is both a North and South entrance to DFW. Depending on where you are coming from will determine which entrance is right for you, but it really doesn’t matter as all of the terminals are easily accessible from both directions.

Whether your travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex involves spending time in the area or is simply to take advantage of DFW Airport’s impressive flight schedules, staying close to or at the airport is a fabulous option. Not only will you find some of the region’s best pricing here, but it’s easy to travel throughout the metro area with the central location of the airport as your base of operations. If you have a car with you, parking is much easier and generally less expensive (or free!), too.
Both downtowns are about a half-hour away if you can avoid rush hour, with Six Flags, Texas Rangers baseball, and Dallas Cowboys football in Arlington also under a 30-minute drive at most times of the day. The Dallas Stars NHL hockey team and Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball team both play their home games at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas, so again, figure on 30-45 minutes from the DFW area as the games are often played on weekday evenings. Traffic tends to be a bit lighter during the weekends.
If you are spending the night prior to a flight at an airport area hotel, be sure to grab a bite to eat before settling in or pick up food to bring to your room. With the exception of the larger, full-service properties which have restaurants open for evening dining, you will want to check out local dining options before arriving at your hotel. The good news is that there are a gazillion (lots!) of restaurants in the communities nearby the airport, so finding a wide selection of dining options won’t be a problem.
