Riviera Maya Day of the Dead Festival
Many people think Mexico is just a place to go get warm during cold winter months but the día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) festival is a excellent reason to visit during the fall season. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated from October 31st-November 2nd. While the name of the holiday may seem grim, this is actually a very colorful, lively celebration. Families create colorful altars with flowers, photos, candies, and foods to honor the dead. Adults gather in cemeteries for lively parties with mariachi bands while the children participate in sort of a Mexican version of trick-o-treating which involves going from door to door asking for small gifts of money, candy or skull-shaped bread.
This unique tradition is an excellent reason to take advantage of slow season flight deals and visit Mexico in the fall.
