AX The Saint John

Location was excellent. Central part of the main areas of interest in Valletta. Relaxed bar / bistro immediately outside. A little noisy at weekends if, like us, your room is just above!

The "St John" part of the hotel is a separate "annex" to the Rosselli Hotel, a few doors down the road, which is, apparently, an AX Privilege hotel. It's not that we didn't like the St John but it was very much a self-service annex with no staff on duty..they were in the Rosselli. The Rosselli is certainly is a top class hotel with a Michelin starred restaurant below! Eur 300 for two people (one bottle of wine) during a three hour session.....

This is a great location in Valletta and the stay exceeded our expectations! We booked for enough rooms to accommodate all of our family of 10, and when there was an issue with a couple of the rooms we reserved, they already planned an upgrade for those 2 rooms even before our arrival! In fact, they moved us to their Rosselli property next door! Both properties have amazing accommodations! What really made our stay so amazing were the people who worked there (from the amazing teams at the front desk providing such a warm welcome and kindness each day to the servers at breakfast who provided a great start to each day ... too many names to mention as all were fantastic throughout our stay)! Would highly recommend the stay at either property. Thank you!

Everything was amazing! Only thing to suggest would be more utilization of the rooftop bar and consideration of a happy hour as the views were amazing.

Everything went extremely well. During my check in, I was told they were going to upgrade my room because they were fully booked. The alternative was excellent! Breakfast was always great. The staff were kind and polite. Have to give a shout out to the front desk who recommended all the great places to visit. This made a huge difference to how much we enjoyed our time in Malta. The location was great as well. A range of restaurants to chose from within walking distance. We could also get to the Ferry and other public transportation easily. Uber and Bolt work there and we never waited longer than 2 minutes for one to arrive.

(This review will be about the Rosselli hotel next door since we got an upgrade from the St John.) Oh my, we had such a great time at the Rosselli. The location is of course great - in the middle of the city center, bus close by, ferries too. The hotel is situated at the end of a busy street (pedestrians only). The room was quite large and luxurious with every amenity you might need. Great beds too. Our highlight was the amazing breakfast. The food was just top notch. Finally, a special shout-out to all the personnel, they really made our stay as pleasant as it could be.

Small thing; at a cafe next door there’s live music almost every night until 23:30. If you sleep at the street side you’ll hear it. No issue but could be bothersome to you if you are an early sleeper.

This is a great little boutique hotel that is run by Hotel Rosselli a few doors down, and allows use of their rooftop bar and pool. The Hotel has an amazing central location on Merchant St and is next to number of bars and restaurants which makes for a bustling atmosphere. Our room was stylish and huge, with a very comfortable super king bed. Breakfast was excellent - fresh fruit, yoghurt, pastries and eggs cooked any way you want - all served in their lovely outdoor dining area.

There is some street noise in the room but there is great double glazing that blocks out most of the noise. Light sleepers may find this a problem, we used ear plugs and didn't hear a thing!

Everything asked for was accommodated. The room was perfect in size and outstanding in decor for the weekend break time spent using the room. Breakfast was 5 Star. Fresh cooked and served with cheese and fresh fruit. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who attended in gust and joy. We had 8am flight and a breakfast box was made available for us to take to the airport without charge or issue. If you get an opportunity to book this hotel grab it?. Easy walk to outstanding local restaurants and bars. You could not get a better located hotel in the heart of Valletta.

Having to leave

The room was spacious, clean an well equipped. Although I we would recommend to ask for a room not facing to the front as there is a pub down there with live music on weekends (except Sunday evening;-)). As long as you're not going to sleep before 11 pm its ok but if you're tired after a long day walking Valletta and the three cities you may like to find some sleep earlier. The staff suprised my wife a chilled bottle of sparkling wine and a nice greeting card on the occasion of her decadal birthday. That was indeed a very nice touch and was much appreciated. Thanks once again. The continental breakfast was served daily at the near Rosselli Hotel a few meters down the Merchant Street. The staff was very polite and friendly all the time and very attentive. They always had a little smile for the guests. The hotel is situated in an ideal location. The seafront, the Grandmaster Palace, St. Johns Cathedral and much more is all within a short walking distance. Also a lot of bars and restaurants are in short reach. We can recommend the Taproom on Old Theater Street (be sure to make a reservation!), the Alchemy Bar and for a quick burger the Cheeky Monkey right down the stairs. We will definitely come back for another stay. Thanks!

Staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming throughout our stay, the location is absolutely fantastic right in the heart of the older part of the city and in close proximity to everything you might need/want to visit during your visit to Valletta. The room was extremely clean and decorated in a really tasteful way, it made it a really enjoyable space to be and there was an external balcony overlooking the street which was an added bonus. Incredibly comfortable bed, lovely shower, and great air-con. Would undoubtedly stay again on a return to the city.

The only thing that was a slight issue for us was that the hotel is above quite a busy section of the street and the hotel's own bar. It was a Saturday night and the nightlife was quite audible within the room, as was the recycling collection at 5am. I wouldn't imagine this is an issue all the time and didn't ruin our stay.

In essence, this was an annexe of the adjoining hotel. With no separate reception and NO facilities on site, I question why you market the “room only” facility under the auspices of a separate “hotel”It does not mention this when booking and there is no mention of the ability to share the main hotels facilities (rooftop pool etc) at all, until I asked.

This hotel is truly exceptional! Starting with super friendly and helpful staff, through delicious breakfast ending with super clean and comfortable room. The room was very specious and cleaned every day. We got one on the 5th floor with a balcony were we could enjoy a view of the entire Valletta. The breakfast was amazing as you get a tray with continental breakfast and on top of that they can make an omlette or eggs whichever way you like. On special order they even made an English breakfast on my husband's birthday. Also, when I asked for a little welcome note in the room for his birthday we got a bottle of a lovely wine. Thank you! The location of the hotel is perfect! It's just few steps away from great restaurants and tourist attractions. It was also good value for money. Highly recommend.
