The host was friendly and professional. The location was great, easy access to the freeway and to BART station. The room was very clean and comfortable, with ample space. We had relaxing hot showers, and had a quiet working a/c that helped for a good night sleep. This old style motel has modern amenities. The parking lot was plenty and the presence of security was there. It was less expensive than many places in the area.

No advance notice on the website regarding cash deposit upon check-in for incidentals. I am not sure how the policies and agreements with booking.com though. So, be ready to pay a $100 cash deposit upon check-in for incidentals. After the check-out inspection in the morning, they gave me back my cash with no hassle at all. For me, it was reasonable, and honestly, I prefer this cash deposit rather than dealing with credit card held funds and waiting for the bank to release the funds in a timely manner as we were traveling long ways from home.

The modest price was welcome.; suiting perfectly the modest furnishings. The 4 minute distance from Bay Area Rapid Transit was important to my plans. I slept very soundly.

There was nothing that discomfited me. For the Bay Area near Berkeley, the price was a great relief. I was very glad to find a place available at the last minute.

Location was perfect for me. I was in town for a marathon and it was a 10 minute walk to the start line. Also, since it was a Sunday, there was a large flea market directly across the street from the lodge.

Old structure that predates the freeway expansion, and recent zoning restrictions of limiting services visible from the freeway. Old style charm, slightly creepy urban landscape but one that was well managed with sufficient staff present and aware of the premises of all times, security presence was obvious in adjacent college parking lot, and no obvious theft or damage to property ensued all weekend. Oakland has always been safe in my experience in the Lake Merritt / Civic Center area and I felt safe walking across town from the Fox Theater on a Friday night rather than pay $30 for a late Lyft to drive me 10 blocks (after paying under $10 for a ride to the Theater several hours earlier). My car was safely parked and supervised in the motel parking lot all weekend. I recommend this old style motel in spite of the urban landscape because it is competently managed with close proximity to the freeway and significantly less expensive than many places in the vicinity.

Freeway is next to the motel but well elevated above the street. Be prepared to pay a $100 cash deposit upon check in which I was not aware until I saw the sign at check in. It was not unreasonable under the circumstances, as my card is a debit account, and they gave me my cash back with no hassle. Frankly, that is preferable to putting a hold on the funds and then waiting for the banks to release them in a prompt manner. The cash worked better, in this case, but my concern was that I was not notified in advance, perhaps due to booking.com policy agreements.

While seemingly non-descript and in the middle of nowhere, it was a very short (0.1 mi) walk from the Lake Merritt BART station. Lake Merritt was very close and very scenic and pleasant. It was well run and maintained, and the owners were very helpful. Excellent location if driving, ample parking.

I know this is a common thing in America but, it's pretty scary they have to hold your credit card in order to make the payment and for a few seconds you're unable to see what they're doing with it. It should be illegal...

They keep there property well kept ....for a low end lodge . . No bugs
