GAIA Hotel Basel - the sustainable 4 star hotel

We really loved the Gaia, pronounced ‘guy-ya’. The location was excellent! It’s very close to the trams & train station. The breakfast spread was great, however the menu stays the same every day. The decor is lovely.

We booked the upgraded Gorgeous Room. It was on the 4th floor. We took the stairs always and got a workout in, however they do have an elevator. The issue with this room, was the air conditioning. The unit is downstairs, under the floor of the upstairs bedroom area. Heat rises. That is a fact. The air conditioner did not make upstairs! In fact, it’s freezing downstairs and hot upstairs. Upon checkout I found out I could’ve asked for a fan! Note that Switzerland on average does not have air conditioning anywhere. It’s a very conservative & energy efficient country.

The hotel is very centrally located right across from the main Basel Train Station. Although the hotel is located in the centre of Basel, my room was quiet and I was able to sleep well. The hotel had lots of character and style. Staff were very friendly and helpful and attentive. I loved the refreshments that were available for guests in the lobby and also that the mini bar was included in the room. I also enjoyed the selection at breakfast.

I wished there were more pillows provided for neck support. However, I was still able to sleep very well and woke up feeling rested during my entire four night stay. There was some renovation work so it was a bit challenging to find the entrance on arrival.

This was one of our favorite hotels during our travels around Switzerland. The location near the train station and tram hub (free Basel tranit pass provided) make our travel so easy without a need for a taxi. The staff was superior. The amenities in the room were superior. I could not have asked for a better included breakfast in the most charming dining area. The spa downstairs was a welcome relief after a week of travels around Switzerland. We started and ended our journey in Switzerland at this hotel. Upon return, the staff made us feel like we were coming home. Highly recommend this hotel.

I honestly cannot think of anything that was not superior at this hotel. We had an excellent experience during both of our stays.

Breakfast was very good and the slight variations daily on offerings were welcome. All of the staff were outstanding from the front desk to the breakfast staff and beyond. The location is unbeatable, directly across the street from the entrance to the train station and right at the hub of the tram system. It was also unexpectedly quiet, given the location. Also, the whole theme of environmental friendliness suited our values and they really "walked the talk" on that aspect of managing the property.

Rooms were very small but adequate and well thought out.

Patrick on the reception desk was really friendly and helpful and explained all about our Baselcard that is offered free by the hotel that entitles users to free transport around Basel and 50% discount at most museums and city river cruise and also covered our transport from the airport. Air-con was very welcomed as it was about 31c outside. The mini-bar in our room filled with water, soft drinks and a beer, plus a chocolate snack was free and restocked every other day. If you choose not to have your bed linen changed on the 2nd day, as we did, you also receive another chocolate snack as a thank you. The breakfast room was beautiful and also uncrowded. During our stay in August only four tables were being used. Breakfast consisted of cereals, dried fruits/seeds etc, yoghurts, fresh fruit, scrambled and boiled eggs, cold cuts, cheeses, bread, rolls and pastries and the waitress was very attentive and friendly. When we checked out, we were given water and a snack for our journey; very thoughtful. I would recommend this hotel without hesitation.

My only criticism would be that flies had settled on the cold cuts at breakfast during the abnormally hot weather and if this is to now be the norm, perhaps fly nets/dome covers might be appropriate, although I understand the hotel management is now considering this.

We picked this hotel for it's location, opposite Basel train station and a short tram ride to the city centre, so pleased we did! One of the most helpful, friendly hotels we have stayed in, exceptionally clean and comfortable and a beautiful room. I have seen other reviews mentioning the breakfast and it should have been a little more varied, we couldn't fault it at all! Exceptional quality and plenty of choice. Thank you to all at the Gaia Hotel for a wonderful week, we will be returning!

Very good location, across the street from train station. Very modern, clean and beautiful interior. More amenities than you could ask for in this price range. They have incorporated technology into their service and rooms beautifully. Breakfast selection wide and tasty. Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms very clean and tastefully decorated. Complementary minibar is a nice touch. Self check-in and check-out via website. Price was good for the quality you get, especially when compared to some of the more touristy regions eg. Interlaken.

Had to provide credit card details on 3 separate occasions - booking.com reservation + third party self check-in website + on-site. Feels a bit unnecessary! On the website under my account view I ended up with 3x credit cards, even though I provided the same one every time.

An excellent hotel at a very central location. Stand-out staff, always friendly and helpful, and always with a smile. The so-called smart double room had everything we needed. While on the small side, the room was perfect for a weekend stay. It had warm colors, comfy (and firm) beds with great comforters, and it was super clean. The bathroom, also on the small side, had nice lighting and good shower pressure. WIFI was very fast. Breakfast was outstanding, served in a historic-looking hall. The free Basel Card was an excellent add-on, as it offered free public transport and a 50 percent discount at museums.

Two very minor points: 1) The in-room safe was at a very high location. 2) The English version of the booking confirmation stated that public transport from Basel‘s main railway stations (plural) was included, while the German version used singular and only referred to the main station (presumably Basel SBB); as we arrived at the so-called German station („Badischer Bahnhof“), we weren‘t certain if the transfer to the hotel was included or not.

Perfect location for Basel main train station. Upmarket, but not fussy, hotel -- very comfortable beds, good sized room, well appointed bathroom, very quiet. very good buffet breakfast. Have stayed here once before, would definitely stay again. Not a bargain option, but you feel you've got what you've paid for,.

Nothing to dislike.

location was excellent for travel being opposite the rail station and only 10 minute walk into centre of town. Very attentive staff and lovely decor

breakfast was a bit limited and hot food was almost cold but that temperature seems to be normal in mainland Europe - heating system failed which was a bit difficult in mid winter and hotel did not appear to have any back up apart from providing a mobile heater - but they did improve on that in night two which was much more comfortable
