Boston flights

As the 12th largest metro area in the U.S. with more than five million residents, the greater Boston area is served by several airports. Boston Logan International Airport is located just across the Main Channel from downtown, a mere 4.3 miles by car, and is far and away the largest domestic and international airport serving the region.

Travelers headed for suburban areas or further north into New England also have the option of T.F. Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island which is 65 miles to the south, and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, 52 miles to the north in New Hampshire. Some travelers going to cities west of Boston such as Worcester, Marlborough and Framingham utilize Bradley International Airport, midway between Hartford CT and Springfield MA and just one hour away by car. Avoiding Boston’s notorious traffic may be a better option for travelers who aren’t going downtown.

For the purposes of this article, however, the focus is on Logan International, which is the preferred airport for most domestic arrivals, as well as all international flights.

Cheaper Flights to Boston with Low Fare Carriers

If finding a cheap flight is a top priority for your trip to Boston, low fare carriers Allegiant Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines currently offer flights from Logan International Airport. Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines serve Boston via Manchester, New Hampshire.

Known for regularly adjusting their winter schedules to coincide with seasonal peak travel times to Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean, and other warm weather destinations, service to Boston is often increased during the summer months. Low fare airlines may not fly a route more than once daily, and often their service is less frequent than that.

Many vacation destinations may see flights one or two times each week. You will also find that these airlines may not offer shoulder or off-season routes to Boston at all, but they are certainly worth taking a look at when making your plans.

Also, a word to the wise is that you should always book your air travel with a major credit card just in case an airline stops serving a particular market or goes out of business. For example, Spirit Airlines entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in the last year, so you may feel more comfortable booking with a more financially stable airline.

There are also deals to be had with the larger airlines if you prefer to fly with a name brand carrier. Each of the major U.S. airlines offers cheaper economy class fares to compete with the low fare carriers, but there are certain restrictions that you should be aware of.

The lowest major carrier fares, often termed “basic” or “economy basic”, are non-refundable, non-changeable or only with added fees, do not award frequent flyer miles, and do not allow choosing your seat assignment until check-in time which is typically 24 hours prior to departure. But, if you want to save money, fly with a carrier you are familiar with, and don’t really care where your seat is on the aircraft, this may be the way to go.

You’ve Booked Your Boston Flights. Now, Where Should You Stay?

Geographically, it’s easier to determine what area of Boston is best for you to stay in than it is for many larger cities. Business travelers usually opt for the heart of the downtown business district, while vacationers tend to choose hotels that are close to the seaport, Boston Common, across the Charles River in Cambridge, or close to the airport.

Using our long-preferred hotel booking website which is known for having very competitive prices, Travelated, here are some recommendations in each area. However, bear in mind that there are more than 150 properties to consider, with every price range well represented.

  • Downtown Boston/Government Center: Boston Omni Parker House Hotel, The Dagny Boston, Fifteen Beacon Hotel.
  • Boston Common: Hotel AKA Boston Common, The Godfrey Hotel Boston, The Ritz-Carlton Boston.
  • Cambridge: Le Meridien Boston-Cambridge, Hyatt Regency Cambridge/Boston, The Royal Sonesta Boston.
  • Logan Airport: Comfort Inn Logan International Airport, Hilton Boston Logan Airport (on the airport grounds), Courtyard by Marriott Boston Logan Airport.
