San Diego is perfect voor buitenactiviteiten

Door het gematigde klimaat is San Diego het hele jaar door een ideale vakantiebestemming. Het is hier zelden te warm of bijzonder koud, en hoewel januari en februari de natste maanden zijn, komen buien veel vaker voor dan drijfnatte regenbuien. Als u op zoek bent naar dag na dag zon, kunnen bezoekers aan San Diego van mei tot oktober hun regenkleding thuislaten. De temperaturen zijn supercomfortabel tijdens de piekmaanden in de zomer, wanneer de kinderen niet naar school gaan. Aan de kust liggen de temperaturen meestal rond de lage tot midden 70 graden in juni, juli en augustus, met 's nachts slechts temperaturen rond de 60 graden. In het binnenland liggen de temperaturen in de zomer tussen de lage en hoge 80 graden, en als de Santa Ana-winden waaien kunnen er zelfs een paar dagen zijn die de 100 naderen.

De gemiddelde temperatuur in de winter ligt meestal rond de 60 graden met koele avonden en nachttemperaturen tot in de 40 of 50 graden. Koele briesjes langs de kust zijn verfrissend en de meeste dagen zijn zonnig en comfortabel. Je kunt er zeker van zijn dat er geen sneeuw wordt voorspeld, ongeacht de tijd van het jaar. Zwemmen in de oceaan kan een beetje koel zijn in de winter, maar de meeste zwembaden van hotels zijn verwarmd zodat je een duik kunt nemen wanneer je maar wilt.

Zoals je zou verwachten is de op één na grootste stad van Californië (alleen Los Angeles is groter) met 1,4 miljoen inwoners in de stad zelf en 3,3 miljoen in het metrogebied in de loop der jaren een smeltkroes geworden. Bijna 50 procent van de inwoners is van Latijns-Amerikaanse of Aziatische afkomst. Hiertoe behoren grote aantallen Mexicaanse, Midden- en Zuid-Amerikaanse immigranten en hun gezinnen, evenals grote gemeenschappen Filippijnse, Vietnamese, Japanse, Koreaanse en Chinese inwoners.

"Laten we naar het strand gaan"

Seaport Village

Seaport Village is een leuke plek voor een ontspannen wandeling, het bekijken van lokale winkels of om een hapje te eten in het centrum van San Diego. Ontspan en bekijk de prachtige schepen, meer winkels en eetgelegenheden in het aangrenzende Embarcadero. KINDVRIENDELIJK!

Gaslamp Kwartier

Gaslamp Quarter/Dit uitgaansgebied in het centrum is zeer goed begaanbaar en gevuld met prachtige Victoriaanse gebouwen uit het begin van de 20e eeuw, een overvloed aan winkels en restaurants, plus een leuk nachtleven. PETCO Park en de prachtige waterkant liggen op loopafstand. Bezoek het overdag of 's avonds voor gegarandeerd plezier.

Misschien wilt u meerijden met een van de populaire Old Town Trolley Tours die 11 haltes in San Diego en over de brug in Coronado heeft. Deze educatieve en schilderachtige excursie met uitleg biedt passen voor één of twee dagen. Als u alleen wilt rijden en de bezienswaardigheden vanaf de trolley wilt bekijken, reken dan op een uur of 45 minuten van begin tot eind. De Quarter is opgenomen in het National Register of Historic Places.

Maritiem Museum

San Diego Dierentuin Safaripark

San Diego Zoo Safari Park/Gelegen in de buitenwijk Escondido 32 mijl ten noorden van het centrum van San Diego, lijkt dit enorme 1.800 hectare grote wildpark in niets op zijn familielid in de binnenstad. In een open omgeving leven de dieren in natuurlijke habitats die bijna doen denken aan Aziatische graslanden en Afrikaanse savannen.

Als een bezoek aan beide dierentuinen te veel dierentijd is voor jou of het gezin, kun je overwegen dat veel online posters zeggen dat Safari Park het leukste deel van hun bezoek aan San Diego was. Maak zeker een ritje met de gratis Africa Tram Safari trolley waar je kuddes neushoorns, antilopen, giraffen, waterbuffels, zebra's en vele andere prachtige dieren ziet. Een wandeling maken langs het Tiger Trail is een andere favoriete activiteit van bezoekers, net als het park van bovenaf bekijken via de heteluchtballonsafari.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park/San Diego's culturele centrum net ten oosten van het centrum, dit ongelooflijke park van 1.200 hectare is de thuisbasis van 17 musea waaronder het San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego Air & Space Museum, Timken Museum of Art, Mingei International Museum, Fleet Science Center + IMAX, Museum of Us, en voor treinliefhebbers, het San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

Als je je tijd in Balboa liever buiten doorbrengt, zijn er prachtige tuinen die zeker de moeite waard zijn. Er is een rozentuin, een cactustuin, een palmentuin, een Japanse vriendschapstuin en een gebouw vol planten en een lelievijver.

Balboa Park is aangewezen als National Historic Landmark District en heeft verschillende architectonische structuren van de 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition. Zorg ervoor dat je de El Prado promenade in Spaans koloniale stijl, de California Tower en verschillende Case del Prado gebouwen ziet. Sea World

USS Midway Museum

USS Midway Museum/One of the most population attractions in San Diego, this maritime museum is a favorite of first-time visitors to San Diego. Build aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier that is permanently moored at the downtown Embarcadero/Navy Pier, guests can explore the massive ship inside and out.

From the flight deck to the hangar deck and the multitude of fascinating inside spaces, the longest-serving U.S. Navy carrier (1945-92) will open your eyes to the life at sea experienced by more than 200,000 sailors that served on the vessel. A highlight of the museum, especially for kids, are the more than 30 restored Navy aircraft on the flight and hangar decks, including helicopters and fighter jets.

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park/From the coastal bluffs high above the Pacific Ocean, visitors flock here to see the magnificent sunset night after night. Views are unobstructed, so many visitors an hour or more before sunset to follow the sun’s descent into the waters below.

Hike at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Hike at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve/Incredible wide-ranging views of the Pacific Ocean are the main attraction from the hiking trails atop the coastal bluffs here. Depending on who’s in your travel party and your determination, there are short and easy walks to consider, as well as moderate hikes that include changes in elevation along the way.

Passing through rare Torrey pine forests is a terrific way to experience the native vegetation (think beautiful wildflowers) and geology, with some trails descending from the bluffs to the beach. The views from the beach skyward to the tops of the bluff are magnificent but remember, if you walk down to the beach, you will have to make the upward climb to the top of the bluffs to reclaim your car.

La Jolla

La Jolla/There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful town 12 miles north of downtown San Diego. The upscale community is located in San Diego County but feels like a world apart from nearby city life. The Mediterranean-style coastline is ideal to view and hear the local sea lions at La Jolla Cove, considered by some to be the most beautiful beach anywhere on the California coast. Other local activities include snorkeling and kayaking, browsing the side variety of local shops that cater to tourists as well as affluent locals. You will no doubt be awed by the amazing nearby cliffs and beaches and the colorful sunsets. Be sure to see the elusive little blue penguins, octopus, ocean fish habitats, coral reefs, and many other kinds of marine life at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (managed by UC San Diego). Scripps also houses one of the world’s largest seadragon and seahorse habitats that visitors rave about.

The Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art is situated above the beaches on bluffs overlooking the ocean, within easy walking distance of La Jolla Cove. The highly regarded facility features paintings, sculpture, photography, and other art forms in rotating and permanent exhibits focused on 1950 until today. Hint: Whether you are touring the museum or not, you may dine at The Kitchen at MCASD, an ocean view full-service restaurant featuring a Mediterranean menu for lunch and dinner.

Coronado Island

A visit to Coronado Island, directly across San Diego Bay from downtown by bridge instantly transforms your location from a busy city to a slow going beach town vibe. With wide sandy beaches, fabulous views looking back at downtown, and its own residential feel with historic charm, Coronado is well worth a visit. You can drive here on your own or take an Old Town Trolley Tours excursion where you can hop off and back on when you are ready. Be sure to stroll through the grounds and public areas of the stunning circa 1888 Hotel Del Coronado, as well as the adjacent beach.

San Diego Is One Of The Best Food Cities In The U.S.

Whatever kind of food you’re looking for, you will find it in San Diego. The city’s food scene has been strongly influenced by its close proximity to Mexico, but San Diegans are a diverse collection of people from around the world who have thankfully brought their native cuisines to this sun-drenched locale.

Gaslamp Quarter:

The area can be touristy depending on where you choose to dine, but with rooftop dining, steakhouses, and an abundance of local restaurants with strong track records, the Quarter offers plenty of options for solo diners, couples, and families. It is especially busy at night in what is definitely an energetic urban area, making it a good lunch to and mid-afternoon choice.

North Park:

A favorite area with the locals. Discover trendy, chef-driven restaurants, creative cocktails, craft beers, and global dishes in this artsy, easy-going neighborhood. The area is especially popular with the young professionals crowd.

Downtown San Diego:

The bay and marina views along the waterfront make dining downtown worth considering. There’s no shortage of seafood spots, and some of them are actually casual and affordable. The Embarcadero is popular with first-time visitors who haven’t yet discovered the city’s other neighborhoods, and families with younger and toddler kids. Overall, better food can be found elsewhere, but the views are stellar.

Little Italy:

Casual and upscale dining options in a walkable neighborhood. You’ll find old-style Italian meals, modern takes on Italian recipes, with plenty of seafood and wine to make for a wonderful experience. The area is busy from morning to evening with outdoor patios with fabulous people watching, coffee shops, and of course, Italian bakeries where you can pick up a supply of amazing breads and desserts for home.

La Jolla:

Come for the ocean views, stay for the upscale California-style dining with seafood and tapas at the bar especially popular. La Jolla is also a great area to find a brunch to your liking. This is the place for a relaxed evening meal on the coast.

Pacific Beach:

Casual, fun, and less expensive than the trendy food neighborhoods, Pacific Beach is the place for a savory breakfast, tacos, fried fish, and fun bars to make your day at the beach complete. A younger crowd gives the area a distinct energetic feeling.
