San Diego es perfecto para las actividades al aire libre

El clima templado de San Diego lo convierte en un destino vacacional ideal durante todo el año. Aquí rara vez hace demasiado calor o frío, y aunque enero y febrero son los meses más lluviosos, son más frecuentes los chubascos que las lluvias torrenciales. Si lo que busca es un día tras otro de sol, los visitantes de San Diego entre mayo y octubre pueden dejar la ropa de lluvia en casa. Las temperaturas son muy agradables durante los meses de verano, con los niños fuera del colegio, y suelen alcanzar los 70 grados en la costa en junio, julio y agosto, con mínimas nocturnas que sólo llegan a los 60 grados. En el interior, las temperaturas oscilan entre los 80 y los 80 grados durante el verano, y cuando soplan los vientos de Santa Ana puede haber días en los que se alcancen los 100 grados.

Las temperaturas máximas medias en invierno suelen rondar los 60 grados, con tardes frescas y mínimas nocturnas que caen hasta los 40 y 50 grados. Las brisas frescas de la costa son refrescantes, y la mayoría de los días son soleados y agradables. Museo Marítimo de San Diego/Situado en el céntrico Embarcadero, el museo alberga el Star of India, construido en 1863 y que es el velero en activo más antiguo del mundo. Compuesto por numerosos barcos atracados en la bahía de San Diego que se pueden explorar, los visitantes pueden ver cómo vivían y trabajaban los marineros durante los largos viajes por mar. A nosotros nos maravillaron especialmente la fragata de la Marina Real británica del siglo XVIII, el HMS Surprise, y el submarino de investigación naval USS Dolphin.

Zoológico de San Diego

Zoo de San Diego/Considerado por muchos uno de los grandes zoológicos del mundo, este pilar de 100 acres del Parque Balboa alberga más de 12.000 animales. En un entorno natural sin jaulas, los visitantes pueden pasear por el Bosque Perdido, la Odisea del Elefante, la Inmersión del Oso Polar, el Paseo del Panda y la exposición Africa Rocks.

Parque Zoológico Safari de San Diego

San Diego Zoo Safari Park/Situado en los suburbios de Escondido, a 32 millas al norte del centro de San Diego, este enorme parque natural de 1.800 acres no tiene nada que envidiar a su pariente del centro de la ciudad. Con un entorno al aire libre, los animales residentes viven en hábitats naturales que casi parecen praderas asiáticas o sabanas africanas.

Si para usted o su familia visitar ambos zoológicos es demasiado tiempo con animales, puede que le interese saber que muchos de los usuarios de Internet afirman que Safari Park fue lo que más disfrutaron de su visita a San Diego. Balboa Park/Centro cultural de San Diego situado al este del centro de la ciudad, este increíble parque de 1.200 acres alberga 17 museos, entre ellos el Museo de Arte de San Diego, el Museo de Historia Natural de San Diego, el Museo del Aire y el Espacio de San Diego, el Museo de Arte Timken, el Museo Internacional Mingei, el Centro de Ciencias Fleet + IMAX, el Museo de Usos y, para los entusiastas de los trenes, el Museo de Maquetas de Ferrocarril de San Diego.

Si prefiere pasar su tiempo en Balboa disfrutando del aire libre, hay preciosos jardines que merece la pena ver. Hay un jardín de rosas, un jardín de cactus, un jardín de palmeras, un jardín japonés de la amistad y un edificio con plantas botánicas y un estanque de nenúfares.

El Parque Balboa, declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional, conserva varias estructuras arquitectónicas de la Exposición Panamá-California de 1915-16. No deje de ver el paseo de estilo colonial español de El Prado, la Torre California y varios edificios del Caso del Prado. USS Midway Museum

USS Midway Museum/One of the most population attractions in San Diego, this maritime museum is a favorite of first-time visitors to San Diego. Build aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier that is permanently moored at the downtown Embarcadero/Navy Pier, guests can explore the massive ship inside and out.

From the flight deck to the hangar deck and the multitude of fascinating inside spaces, the longest-serving U.S. Navy carrier (1945-92) will open your eyes to the life at sea experienced by more than 200,000 sailors that served on the vessel. A highlight of the museum, especially for kids, are the more than 30 restored Navy aircraft on the flight and hangar decks, including helicopters and fighter jets.

Hike at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Hike at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve/Incredible wide-ranging views of the Pacific Ocean are the main attraction from the hiking trails atop the coastal bluffs here. Depending on who’s in your travel party and your determination, there are short and easy walks to consider, as well as moderate hikes that include changes in elevation along the way.

Passing through rare Torrey pine forests is a terrific way to experience the native vegetation (think beautiful wildflowers) and geology, with some trails descending from the bluffs to the beach. The views from the beach skyward to the tops of the bluff are magnificent but remember, if you walk down to the beach, you will have to make the upward climb to the top of the bluffs to reclaim your car.

La Jolla

La Jolla/There’s so much to see and do in this beautiful town 12 miles north of downtown San Diego. The upscale community is located in San Diego County but feels like a world apart from nearby city life. The Mediterranean-style coastline is ideal to view and hear the local sea lions at La Jolla Cove, considered by some to be the most beautiful beach anywhere on the California coast. Other local activities include snorkeling and kayaking, browsing the side variety of local shops that cater to tourists as well as affluent locals. You will no doubt be awed by the amazing nearby cliffs and beaches and the colorful sunsets. Be sure to see the elusive little blue penguins, octopus, ocean fish habitats, coral reefs, and many other kinds of marine life at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (managed by UC San Diego). Scripps also houses one of the world’s largest seadragon and seahorse habitats that visitors rave about.

The Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art is situated above the beaches on bluffs overlooking the ocean, within easy walking distance of La Jolla Cove. The highly regarded facility features paintings, sculpture, photography, and other art forms in rotating and permanent exhibits focused on 1950 until today. Hint: Whether you are touring the museum or not, you may dine at The Kitchen at MCASD, an ocean view full-service restaurant featuring a Mediterranean menu for lunch and dinner.

Coronado Island

A visit to Coronado Island, directly across San Diego Bay from downtown by bridge instantly transforms your location from a busy city to a slow going beach town vibe. With wide sandy beaches, fabulous views looking back at downtown, and its own residential feel with historic charm, Coronado is well worth a visit. You can drive here on your own or take an Old Town Trolley Tours excursion where you can hop off and back on when you are ready. Be sure to stroll through the grounds and public areas of the stunning circa 1888 Hotel Del Coronado, as well as the adjacent beach.

Whatever kind of food you’re looking for, you will find it in San Diego. The city’s food scene has been strongly influenced by its close proximity to Mexico, but San Diegans are a diverse collection of people from around the world who have thankfully brought their native cuisines to this sun-drenched locale.

Gaslamp Quarter:

The area can be touristy depending on where you choose to dine, but with rooftop dining, steakhouses, and an abundance of local restaurants with strong track records, the Quarter offers plenty of options for solo diners, couples, and families. It is especially busy at night in what is definitely an energetic urban area, making it a good lunch to and mid-afternoon choice.

North Park:

A favorite area with the locals. Discover trendy, chef-driven restaurants, creative cocktails, craft beers, and global dishes in this artsy, easy-going neighborhood. The area is especially popular with the young professionals crowd.

Downtown San Diego:

The bay and marina views along the waterfront make dining downtown worth considering. There’s no shortage of seafood spots, and some of them are actually casual and affordable. The Embarcadero is popular with first-time visitors who haven’t yet discovered the city’s other neighborhoods, and families with younger and toddler kids. Overall, better food can be found elsewhere, but the views are stellar.

Little Italy:

Casual and upscale dining options in a walkable neighborhood. You’ll find old-style Italian meals, modern takes on Italian recipes, with plenty of seafood and wine to make for a wonderful experience. The area is busy from morning to evening with outdoor patios with fabulous people watching, coffee shops, and of course, Italian bakeries where you can pick up a supply of amazing breads and desserts for home.

La Jolla:

Come for the ocean views, stay for the upscale California-style dining with seafood and tapas at the bar especially popular. La Jolla is also a great area to find a brunch to your liking. This is the place for a relaxed evening meal on the coast.

Pacific Beach:

Casual, fun, and less expensive than the trendy food neighborhoods, Pacific Beach is the place for a savory breakfast, tacos, fried fish, and fun bars to make your day at the beach complete. A younger crowd gives the area a distinct energetic feeling.
