Ja, San Diego International Airport (SAN) heeft een enkele start- en landingsbaan van 9.401 voet die 500-600 vluchten per dag verwerkt, afhankelijk van de tijd van het jaar. Met twee terminals, 51 gates en 16 luchtvaartmaatschappijen die vluchten verzorgen, klaart SAN de klus en is het de beste commerciële luchthaven voor gemak in Zuid-Californië. Zonder twijfel is San Diego International onze favoriete luchthaven in SoCal, vooral als San Diego County of omliggende gemeenschappen uw bestemming of vertrekpunt zijn. Voor reizigers die van plan zijn om dicht bij het vliegveld of het stadscentrum te blijven, is de rit van het vliegveld naar het centrum van de stad echt maar twee en een halve mijl. Leuke feiten over de internationale luchthaven Charles Lindbergh San Diego

Om het land waar nu het vliegveld ligt te ontwikkelen, werd de San Diego rivier omgelegd zodat hij zou eindigen bij de Stille Oceaan in plaats van Mission Bay.

Ryan Aeronautical Company, de bouwer van Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis" vliegtuig was gevestigd vlakbij de locatie van het vliegveld.

Het vliegveld dankt zijn naam aan Charles Lindbergh die in mei 1927 de eerste trans-Atlantische vlucht maakte van Long Island's Roosevelt Field naar Le Bourget Field in Parijs. De historische vlucht duurde 33,5 uur en kwam om 22.22 uur aan voor een juichende menigte van naar schatting 150.000 Parijzenaars. Het vliegveld werd geopend op 16 augustus 1928.

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden op het veld militaire vliegtuigen gemaakt door Consolidated Aircraft. In een deel van de voormalige fabriek is nu de autoverhuur op het vliegveld gevestigd.

De eerste straalvluchten vanaf SAN begonnen in september 1960, met vluchten van American Airlines naar Phoenix en United Airlines naar San Francisco. Straalvliegtuigen naar Chicago en New York begonnen respectievelijk in 1962 en 1967.

De luchthaven heeft momenteel 19 gates in de enkele terminal 1, met plannen om nog eens 11 gates toe te voegen tegen 2028. Terminal 2 heeft 31 gates verdeeld over twee gangen, evenals de internationale aankomstfaciliteit. Sommige internationale vluchten komen aan bij Terminal 1 nadat ze door de Amerikaanse douane en immigratiedienst zijn geklaard op hun vertrekpunt.

Ground Transportation Options at SAN

In addition to the usual taxi, Uber/Lyft, and rental car options available for arriving passengers to reach their local destination, there are public transit options that may interest you. MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) bus route 992 connects both terminals with downtown San Diego. In addition to making stops within walking distance of numerous hotels, bus riders may also transfer at the Santa Fe Depot to Amtrak and Coaster trains, Rapid Bus Service, as well as the Blue and Green lines of the San Diego Trolley light rail system. MTS route 992 also connects at the City College Station with the Blue and Orange lines of trolley system, plus Rapid Bus Service.

Free-of-charge buses that operate between the airport and the Old Town Transit Center are known as the San Diego Flyer shuttle. The all-electric transportation line operates every 20-30 minutes with convenient timed connections for the trolley system, Coasters, Amtrak, and other MTS buses. If you are headed to the trolley upon arrival, take the rental car shuttle and advise the driver that you would like to exit the bus for the trolley’s Middletown Station. From the bus drop-off there is a two block walk to the trolley. If you are returning to the airport when departing San Diego, walk from the trolley to the same bus stop where the driver will stop and take you to either terminal.

Similar to many other large airports, San Diego International offers a consolidated Rental Car Center that houses 12 companies under one roof. A 24/7 complimentary shuttle operates from the both terminals to the center. This is a designated pickup island outside of each terminal where you can access the transportation. The shuttle runs every 5-10 minutes depending on the time of day. All major companies have counters here as well as Fox, Payless, Sixt, and zipcar.
