Mit zwei Terminals, 51 Flugsteigen und 16 Fluggesellschaften, die Flüge anbieten, ist SAN der beste Verkehrsflughafen in Südkalifornien. Gegenwärtig bietet SAN Nonstop-Flüge zu 87 Zielen an und stellt damit für mehr als 24 Millionen Reisende pro Jahr eine hervorragende Alternative zum Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) dar, der nur 124 Meilen mit dem Auto entfernt ist. Die Dauer der Fahrt von San Diego nach LAX kann jedoch je nach Verkehrsaufkommen auf der I-5 zwischen zwei und fünf Stunden liegen. Ohne Frage ist der San Diego International Airport unser Lieblingsflughafen in Südkalifornien, vor allem, wenn San Diego County oder die umliegenden Gemeinden Ihr Ziel- oder Startpunkt sind. Für Reisende, die in der Nähe des Flughafens oder des Stadtzentrums übernachten möchten, ist die Fahrt vom Flughafen in die Innenstadt mit zweieinhalb Meilen wirklich kurz. Die Ryan Aeronautical Company, der Erbauer des Lindbergh-Flugzeugs "Spirit of St. Louis", befand sich in der Nähe des Flughafens.

Der Name des Flughafens ehrt Charles Lindbergh, der im Mai 1927 den ersten Transatlantikflug vom Roosevelt Field in Long Island zum Le Bourget Field in Paris unternahm. Der historische Flug dauerte 33,5 Stunden und endete um 22:22 Uhr vor einer jubelnden Menge von schätzungsweise 150.000 Parisern. Der Flughafen wurde am 16. August 1928 eröffnet.

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurden auf dem Flugplatz Militärflugzeuge von Consolidated Aircraft hergestellt. Ein Teil der ehemaligen Fabrik beherbergt heute die Autovermietung des Flughafens.

Die ersten Jet-Flüge von SAN starteten im September 1960 mit American Airlines nach Phoenix und United Airlines nach San Francisco. Der Flugbetrieb nach Chicago und New York wurde 1962 bzw. 1967 aufgenommen.

Der Flughafen verfügt derzeit über 19 Flugsteige im Terminal 1 mit nur einer Halle und plant, bis 2028 weitere 11 Flugsteige hinzuzufügen. Terminal 2 verfügt über 31 Flugsteige, die sich auf zwei Abfertigungshallen verteilen, sowie über die internationale Ankunftshalle. Einige internationale Flüge kommen im Terminal 1 an, nachdem sie die US-Zoll- und Einwanderungsbehörde an ihrem Abflugort passiert haben.

Ungewöhnlich für einen US-Flughafen ist, dass auf dem San Diego International zwischen 23:30 Uhr und 6:30 Uhr eine Ausgangssperre für Flugzeuge gilt, um Lärmbeschwerden von Anwohnern einzudämmen.

Ground Transportation Options at SAN

In addition to the usual taxi, Uber/Lyft, and rental car options available for arriving passengers to reach their local destination, there are public transit options that may interest you. MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) bus route 992 connects both terminals with downtown San Diego. In addition to making stops within walking distance of numerous hotels, bus riders may also transfer at the Santa Fe Depot to Amtrak and Coaster trains, Rapid Bus Service, as well as the Blue and Green lines of the San Diego Trolley light rail system. MTS route 992 also connects at the City College Station with the Blue and Orange lines of trolley system, plus Rapid Bus Service.

Free-of-charge buses that operate between the airport and the Old Town Transit Center are known as the San Diego Flyer shuttle. The all-electric transportation line operates every 20-30 minutes with convenient timed connections for the trolley system, Coasters, Amtrak, and other MTS buses. If you are headed to the trolley upon arrival, take the rental car shuttle and advise the driver that you would like to exit the bus for the trolley’s Middletown Station. From the bus drop-off there is a two block walk to the trolley. If you are returning to the airport when departing San Diego, walk from the trolley to the same bus stop where the driver will stop and take you to either terminal.

Similar to many other large airports, San Diego International offers a consolidated Rental Car Center that houses 12 companies under one roof. A 24/7 complimentary shuttle operates from the both terminals to the center. This is a designated pickup island outside of each terminal where you can access the transportation. The shuttle runs every 5-10 minutes depending on the time of day. All major companies have counters here as well as Fox, Payless, Sixt, and zipcar.
