I was happy to support this new establishment, a little gem in town! The space and rooms are nicely presented and decorated; there's a lot of attention to sustainability (incl. recycling and the dry toilets i.e. no flush and you use sawdust to cover waste); comfy beds (if you like them on the harder/firmer side); nice terrace to chill; friendly staff who helped with tips, suggestions, taxi booking etc; very quiet as rooms are away from the road; communal kitchen and fridge should you need them; good location approx 10 min walk from the centre (zocalo) and near a lively market. Would stay again!
Not really negatives, rather something to be aware of and some suggestions for improvement: my single room was a bit small/tight, though if you're not planning to spend a lot of time in or haven't got a lot of stuff, it will be fine; I stayed two nights and the room wasn't cleaned, the bed not done and toilet bin not changed - I didn't ask for but assumed it would be case given it's kind of standard practice; there's no AC but there are fans which was enough when I visited (also AC not common in Mexico); could add dispensers to the bottles of soap as it would make it easier to dose and use less.

Congenial atmosphere. Friendly people- warm environment.
Rooms were small. No window in the second room I stayed in. The door was a window, but I didn’t feel comfortable opening the door while sleeping.

The grounds are rooms were really well-maintained and cared for. I loved the ethos of sustainability and the fact that there were composting toilets in each room. They were changed out regularly as well as upon request. There was a leak underneath the sink but the staff responded to my request for maintenance and it was taken care of. The staff was very kind and helpful.
It would be nice if there was a clearer way to communicate with staff if there is an emergency after hours. I had arranged a late check in ahead of time because my flight arrived after 10pm but a staff member had forgotten to leave the key in my room door as promised. Thankfully, I was lucky to be able to reach someone who happened to check the instagram account after i’d called several times. It all worked out and they granted me a discount and I was grateful for that, but I think some stress and panic could have been avoided on both ends!

the stuff was very welcoming and helpful. we did like the rooftop terrace even though it doesn‘t yet look finished. we like the ecological concept of the hotel. the shower was great.
the place has a big potential and we truly like the eco friendly attempt, but some things can be improved. the bed was quite small and was missing bedside tables (which I would expect at a hotel of this price/category). the dry toilet releases some smell, it shouldn’t be directly in the sleepingroom, we have stayed at places with dry toilets with better solutions. there should be a handle on the toilet lid, because opening and closing gets a higher importance on a dry toilet. the natural rock sink may look fancy bit is highly impractical, how do you want to truly clean that? something polished would make way more sense especially regarding hygienics. the electronical door lock dind‘t work well. the hanging seats in the „chill area“ are very uncomfortable.

Very comfortable, clean and quiet place - the room was really large, bed comfortable. We like the sustainable approach - dry toilets, rain water tanks, plants etc... no need for air con thank to well designed air flows. Shared space with kitchen, coffee, fridge to make life easy. Rooms are in the back, can't hear street noise. The location is very good, a few minutes from the beautiful city center, shops and restaurants., markets, Monte Alban and the amazing treasure of Tumbe 7. We must say that Ara & Mich have been incredible - gave very useful information, touristic & practical, they always been very very reactive. Wish all hosts were like them.
Hard to find something to complain about.. our space in the shared fridge was occupied but Ana immediately took care of it.

The staff was super friendly, the rooms and decor were beautiful and super clean. very unique property that pays attention to every detail and takes pride in showcasing the authentic local Mexican heritage.
It should be made a little more apparent on the booking page that the toilets are Dry and that there are no trash cans in the room. I completely support the environmental awareness and action that the hotel takes to encourage recycling and low waste. I just was not expecting it because it wasn’t obvious enough on the booking page, otherwise I would have planned accordingly and brought less waste with us.

What a beautiful hotel. Loved my stay. Staff was superb! Always helping with questions or sending recommendations. My room was small but had nice decoration, every single detail taken care off. Loved their own shower gel/shampoo - it smelled delicious Wifi connection was strong Rooftop terrace where I did Yoga every 2nd morning. It was quiet but still central. Nice conversations with other guest and staff :-) You guys rock!! Free water Eco-sustainable efforts, I liked the dry toilet, the separation of trash, them creating their own products (fermented juices) Storage space in room was fantastic.
It was advertised as a hostel but it was not a sociable place, there were only a few guests staying and so not many people to chat to. That was a bummer as I travel by myself and love connecting with others. Single room could be bigger Some kitchen equipment was really old and didn't look very inviting to use.

This is really an exceptional place with beautiful attention to design, detail, customer service and satisfaction, and environmental and social ethics. The single bed of my small room was actually a bit larger than it looked in the picture, and everything was very comfortable. The staff is exceptionally friendly, interesting, and constantly available. Both the staff and the great people the hotel attracts are great to speak with and give the place a wonderful vibe. Also, there’s a big kitchen and a big sunny roof for public use, which are helpful when staying a long time.
I didn’t love coming home alone as a woman at night, because the streets were so quiet and empty with just a few cars. Nothing bad happened to me, and it seems to be a generally safe area. However, I would recommend single women walk back to the hotel by around midnight, or take a taxi, to feel more comfortable.

Niyana was an oasis in the hustle of Oaxaca! The staff and volunteers were friendly, attentive and welcoming. The gardens were not only beautiful but also provided delicious flavor to the dishes and tea I made at the hostel. Niyana is an excellent location between Centro and Jalatlaco providing a great home base to explore multiple burros of Oaxaca.
I wish the kitchen were equipped with the beautiful Oaxaca ceramics made in the area but this is purely out of aesthetic desire. The kitchen is otherwise very well equipped.

Wonderful commitment to sustainable alternatives, such as dry toilets, extensive recycling, etc. Great central location. Helpful staff. Lovely rooms.
We did have issues with water pressure and lack of hot water but they made efforts to fix them. We felt toilets should be changed more often when two share a room. Shouldn’t these toilets have separate compartments? Lighting was not adequate in rooms
