Forss House

Everything from the person who checked me in to the lady who checked me out.. I forgot both their names. Very friendly. All information was provided. Seemless process. The property is stunning. The lobby was beautiful. I stayed at the Kiln House. It was massive house (not just a room) with a basement having two bedrooms overlooking the river, and a first floor with the master bedroom, etc. Simply the most beautiful property I stayed in till date. It was mixed themed. Something like a hunting lodge to a World War 2 theme. Costed GBP 401 for a night but worth every penny.

Nothing at all. It was all perfect.

Beautiful setting, the main house has a lot of character and authentic furnishings. Breakfast was very good, the scrambled eggs being a highlight. Nick, the manager was very helpful. Adjacent waterfalls are very pretty.

We stayed in the River House, which is a separate building. This was a bit tired looking, although very comfortable and private. The grounds in front of the main house are well maintained, however the other grounds needs a bit of love, lots of old plastic crates lying around and overgrown forest paths.

Pleasant driveway to the property. Overlooks the River Forss and water falls. Undoubtedly an interesting country house hotel with nearby old cottage premises tastefully decorated to a high standard. Loved the array of old clocks adorning the tartan carpeted stairs and hallway. Ample parking with a good breakfast. Short drive away from Thurso.

Our standard room that we had booked hoping to be in the main house turned out to be an outside bungalow with no atmosphere and felt musty. The manager however was extremely obliging and moved us to a mill cottage which was excellent and at no extra cost. The meals were expensive so we dined in Thurso.

Forss House Hotel exceeded by expectations immensely in both service, dining and facilities. I was travelling alone for a work trip recently and I was made to feel incredibly safe and welcome. The staff were attentive, supportive and welcoming. I have food allergies and this was catered for without any problems and at no detriment to the quality of the food I was provided. The food truly was phenomenal - even with the minor allergy modifications made on my behalf - the protein was cooked beautifully and the balance of flavours in the composition was delicious. I can't thank them enough for looking after me during my stay.

The place is situated on a river with waterfalls. That was our view. Magical. The accommodation was large and beds had the best linens and were super comfortable. We walked the property all the way down to the ocean and it was the best hike. We went along the river and through fields with sheep and it was amazing. The dinner and breakfast was delicious and the lunch they packed for us last minute for the train was made with love and delicious. Wonderful stay.

The Tasting Menue incl the Wine Pairing was excellent. We loved taking the Aperitif in the beautiful „Hunting room“. The staff was very friendly and the room Morven had the best bed ever and an extraordinary bath tub. Forss House is special.

Two topics: We were rushed through the Menue which led us to decide whether to gather several glasses from the diverse courses on our table in order not to get too drunk or to down the drinks to keep up with the hot courses. We told the staff several times to slow down but obviously the cook had his own way. Secondly, this may be too romantic, but I had informed when booking the room and making the dinner reservation that it was our 20th Wedding anniv. I would have appreciated at least a candle on our table or any other romantic atmosphere. Instead I got a short note that in UK 20th Wedding anniversarys are not celebrated. I don‘t want to comment on this but was a bit disappointed.

Absolutely amazing. The staff very friendly, upgraded our room for our honeymoon. The tub was incredible. The house was beautiful, the gardens serene, the tasting menu dinner delicious and filling, great selection of wines, the breakfast also was delicious a la carte style... overall, worth the price, we would love to come back for Christmas someday.

Scotland was unusually hot this week and the room couldn't cool down, however this isn't usually a problem for the Scottish ;)

Forss House is a traditional old style fishing lodge with a very authentic Scottish atmosphere. Rooms in the old main house are big wih very comfortable beds, into which we were upgraded without extra fees from the Miller‘s Cottage, which we found to dark and without comfortable chairs we prefer to have. But for fishing enthusiasts Miller‘s cottage might be perfect as it sits directly at the beautifull river falls with an own terrace. Breakfast and dinner are very good and are served in beautiful rooms. The bar is very well equipped with a large variety of local and best Scottish whisky and Gin. Directly from the hotel a nice walk to a little bay and a new rum & gin distillery is possible.

We stayed in the converted and charming mill cottage by the waterfalls. A group of six and had everything we needed, plus room to entertain. Comfortable & spacious with fabulous views of the falls. Had a private dining room in main hotel to celebrate a special birthday and staff very helpful organising the cake and decorations etc. You can walk along the river to the coastline from the hotel.

There wasn’t a fridge for keeping drinks in but not a major problem.

The location was exceptional, the local town was only a 6 minute drive away. The staff were very relaxed and lovely and the room was beautiful. Dogs are also welcome! 🐾

Breakfast was £8.75 added on without a drink and the portion size was not very filling. There was an ironing board but no iron, no hairdryer and no paper/pens at the desk to use to complete questionnaires. The room was stunning however, there was still a lot of dirt/hairs etc on the floor.
