Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac

Beautiful side view of St. Lawrence, quiet and lovely. Room was large, bathroom was lovely, mattress comfortable, lighting homey.

No sign was available notifying guests that the bottled water and half bottle of wine on the dresser were NOT gratis, and we were charged $12 for the water. This is our fourth Fairmont hotel stay, and all others provided 1 free bottle of water and wine. Fairmont Frontenac needs to leave a sign at the caddy holding the water & wine to this effect.

We arrived after a particularly grueling travel day from Ottawa, replete with terrible traffic through Montreal, following an unfortunate flat tire on our rental car which took hours to fix. We felt defeated... until we checked in with one of the most pleasant, considerate and kind front desk people I've ever had the encounter to meet who placed us in a lovely two-bed room for us that overlooked the Place d'Armes, meaning we were able to hear songs from performers and the cathedral bells through the weekend. The attentive care showed to us upon check-in was needed and It was truly wonderful. Hotel grounds are immense and majestic. The room was well-appointed with coffee and tea (refilled daily), fine bedding and linens, and luxurious toiletries. The housekeeping staff was very pleasant and helpful. The concierge staff was lovely, patiently answering all of our questions and sharing umbrellas on a day that it poured outside. We only dealt with the car valet folks upon our initial drop-off and pick-up to depart - but, again, excellent and friendly customer service in both instances and quite helpful with our luggage. Some helpful notes: the hotel offers a few local walking tours (including a trip on the ferry across to Lévis) that are free for guests - I recommend looking into those options before booking other tours. You don't have to pay the $40 for the breakfast buffet if you don't want to eat that much food. We actually split an "ordered breakfast" of an omelette and it was more than enough for two lighter eaters. The Terrasse Dufferin is a lovely boardwalk right along the river which is great for a stroll - and if they give you the same free gelato/ice cream coupon at Au 1884 that we received upon check-in, be sure to redeem it. The only drawback to staying at a luxury hotel like the Chateau Frontenac is the expense. My Mom always taught me "you get what you pay for," but this place is (as you assume when you see the rates) not a good match for a "budget-minded traveler."

Room was clean, large and quiet. The beds werer very comfortable and the bathroom fully equipped. Easily acquired a refrigerator.

Check-in was poor. We arrived at 1 pm and they said they would expedite the room. Check-in time is desgianted as 4 pm. 3 1/2 hours later we finally got into our room at 4:30, 30 minutes past the agreed time. She said "expedite" so we left our luggage with the bellman. If we had known that it would not even be ready by 4pm we would have gotten items out of our suitcases. It was cold and rainy and I would have retirieved my jacket if it had been availble to me rather than buy a sweatshirt.

I was offered an upgrade to a larger room for additional price, which was reasonable. The room was almost twice the size of the original room. It was almost like a suite and was very spacious. The decor was very pleasing. The room and the bathrooms were very clean. Loved the room had a cappuccino maker. The beds were very comfortable. Needed that after a long day of walking around old Qubec. The staff was very courteous, including the valet service. I suggest go for a valet service, if you will be going in and out, as it is a pain to park a bigger vehicle like a van or a truck in the narrow parking spaces. Also, if you don't do a valet service, which is an additional $5 (Canadian Dollar), you have to give the entry ticket at the lobby and get another ticket from the lobby which you would have to swipe to avoid paying every time the vehicle is taken out of the parking. The additional $5 was worth it, IMO. Let's talk about the Hotel itself. It is page out of the history book. Fascinating! Walking through the corridors, I could almost feel what it was like in those days, even though modern amenities have taken over. The hotel still preserves the old charm. A must experience at least once. Location of the hotel is fantastic. Step out on the boardwalk and you have a fantastic view of St Laurence River. A few minutes of walking down the stairs and you are in the most picturesque shopping district.

The view from the room, even though it says city view, you actually see the roofs of the neighboring buildings. I wish they had a little more lighting in the room. The room cooler was stocked, but nothing was complimentary, except the two bottles of water on day one. The breakfast buffet is very expensive. In my opinion, not a best value for the money. I had dinner at Le Sam. In my opinion, I would have expected much better quality of food for the price I paid.

The Chateau is a beautiful historic hotel situated at the top of the banks of the St Lawrence Seaway. The boardwalk out front with its live entertainers, views and adjacent access to the Promenade and the Citadel is an outstanding feature. The ability to walk to everything that Old Quebec City center has to offer was another bonus. The rooms are clean, spacious and the beds are extremely comfortable.

We expected a few more eating options. If you have egg allergies there seemed to be limited breakfast options that were reasonably priced and we were unable to just order side dishes without ordering an entree which seemed odd. But we worked around it and were able to come up with some non-egg offerings that didn’t require ordering the whole buffet. For the quality of this hotel we were disappointed with the pastries we received. Seems to me they were grocery store quality, not top star hotel restaurant quality. Also, the Starbucks was supposed to be open until 9:00 pm and closed at 5:00 pm with no apparent explanation and we were told there was. No restaurant in the hotel that we could get a coffee from. Ended up having to leave the hotel to get a cup. Seemed odd.

internet access was unnecessarily difficult - nowadays even the holiday inn offers free high speed internet. it’s unacceptable that a hotel of this tenure requests additional fees for internet.

Location / surrounding town / and the people / Hotel in general was very nice

we booked with the Concierge for a 7:00 PM dinner in your SAM restaurant only to be seated at a high top table which my wife when sitting down had no back support an just about fell over backward. As we were told the room is fully booked and that's all that was available for us. Hey we have sat at some of the finest dining room around the world and this was not it. From Raffles in Singapore to Eze in France to the Fabulous Wickaninnish Inn at Tofino This one got you wrong. We ventured out onto St Anne for our dinner

It was an amazing experience to stay at the Fairmont Hotel and we really enjoyed it. After a fall on a damaged sidewalk I returned to the hotel with a very painful, swollen and black and blue ankle injury. The response of the staff and esp. Is**c who offered first aid was tremendous. Once again a big thank you !

The room itself was very well appointed yet on the small side. For a 5 star hotel I missed that 'something extra' in the room such as a turn down at night or a chocolate on your pillow etc.. I also missed the individual toiletries and did not expect to find the big bottle dispensers in the bathroom and shower.

The hotel is amazing!..Five star treatment all around! Food was outstanding at the restaurants! The staff will accommodate any need you require. The Chateau Frontenac tour is a must with the guide in period costume. Beautiful pool, spa and gym..don't forget to ask for robes from the front desk I particularly liked the SMS service which instantly connected you to the front desk to answer questions and fulfill requests. We will be back!

Be careful about the bar fridge in your room, ..if you remove anything, even to look at, you will be charged!...the fridge and wine stand is constantly weighted, and is reported. You can view your bill on tv in your room, but I did find it somewhat complicated given all the taxes. At checkout, the bill is explained perfectly however!

We loved everything. We especially loved the attention that each staff member showed from the moment we pulled the car into the courtyard until the moment we left. Professionalism at every moment.

One thing that was an issue was that we had a wheelchair bound person in our party and the elevator to the pool was broken/out of service. We really needed that for him to go to pool level. We felt it was too late to bring that to your attention as it was the last night of our two night stay when we figured it out. But it would be good for you to get that running again for the those who need it.
