Hotel National Bern

My overall experience was very positive. It was a property very close to the Bern train station, close to the business area and others. The room was not large but comfortable. The receptionists were very friendly, especially the lady who helped me with finding a restaurant on Sunday night (apparently very difficult to find a traditional Swiss restaurant open on Sunday nights). The restaurant on the ground floor was good (which I tried on Monday).

The only thing I need to mention is that there is a theatre in the same building, as is mentioned in the hotel site. When I stayed, there was an event there and even though my room was not directly next to the theatre, the sound was so large until around 23:30. To those who need quiet environment, it may be disturbing.

This hotel is quite old fashioned but rather charming. They still use room keys with a heavy metal number tag. (This was kindly removed for me so I did not have to carry it around.) The lift is old and very creaky but it worked fine. My room was quite small. The bed was comfortable but there was no wardrobe. There were some hangers on a rail and there were drawers in each side of the bed so I stored my clothes and other possessions in these. There was no desk but there was a narrow shelf attached to the wall, which was just big enough to use for writing or eating. The ensuite bathroom was fine and I was very pleased to find it had a pull-out washing line. There was a kettle in the room. Very good breakfast with a good selection of food. You can boil your own egg and squeeze your own fresh orange juice. A variety of yoghurts, different Swiss cheeses, nice bread. Very friendly and helpful staff on the reception desk. They were exceptionally good. The hotel has a restaurant and I ate there one evening. I had a delicious Wienerschnitzel. Expensive but so are most places in Switzerland. Location very good. Easy to walk to from the station and a short walk to the old centre of Bern. It's easy to use the tram network to get around, some of the trams stopped right in front of the hotel.

For me, the bed was rather too firm and the big pillows too soft but I adapted. The lift made me a bit nervous. Room a bit small and rather poorly furnished.

* Free public transportation access *very near to bus and train stations *we arrived early so we waited at the lobby & stored our luggages inside secured lockers. we went to explore the city then came back at 3 pm and received our room access cards *The room was moderate in size but the terrace was amazing with city view, a table and two chairs. * the breakfast was so nice with a variety of cheese kinds, bakeries, yogurt, veggies,hot drinks, fresh juices and fruits, cold cuts and desserts

Nothing was bad about it except the pillows were so soft and my neck hurts me badly

Friendly and helpfull staff that speaks english. Room was simple, but nice and clean. Central location close to lightrail and trainstation.

No aircondition in the room. Lightrail in the street makes a lot of noise, so bring earplugs, especially during summertime when you will need to keep the windows open at night. The elevator is original to the builing, meaning it is more than 100 years old. Works like a charm, but will only go to exit-floor with help of a staff-key. This means you will probably end up carrying your bags/suitcases one floor when checking in, and if you check out outside of reception opening hours.

The breakfast was delicious. The location was amazing, super close to the train station, a grocery store and to old town. The room was very clean, every time we asked for something we got it immediately. The hotel provided a fan which was very nice because it was so hot!

We loved the hotel- we would for sure stay again. Make sure to check your email if you are checking in late- we almost were unable to get in the night we came because we did not have a door code and the hotel was closed.

Great hotel right in the heart of Bern... and what a city !!! The staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful. This hotel is a 5.min walk to the centre of Bern. And of course the hotels pride and joy is the 200 year old, still functioning, lift !! Would recommend to all travellers!!!

Parking was nearby in a multi storey car park and is paid for separately. A little noisey from time to time with the trams that run by the hotel, but it's not really a deal breaker

Really central hotel close to the train station but far enough away to be quiet at night. Great location if you're only on foot or public transport. The staff help you with a 48 hour free public transport pass so that you can easily get around the centre of Bern. My partner was ill the morning we arrived and I contacted the property for an early check in which they were quick to respond yes and at no extra cost! We were so grateful! The rooms are really clean and the bed was extra comfortable. The continental breakfast was incredible with the best orange juice and a huge array of options. We would rate it 11/10.

The location was amazing. Within 5 easy minutes of the Bern Hauptbahnhof and to the city. The room was a bit tight, but for one traveler who only spent the time there to sleep and cleanup it was perfect. The bathroom was actually quite spacious. The staff was very friendly, professional and helpful. The breakfast was fantastic! The dining room staff was also just great! There was also a really cool old fashioned elevator you can use! Definitely recommend this hotel. This made me two for two great stays on this trip! 👍😃😎

we picked another perfect location easy for us to walk to the train station and old town of Bern! also discovered the swimming area and the funicular! the room was lovely and clean and appreciated the room off the side for our teenager traveling with us! we enjoyed the cranberry tea with the hot water kettle in our room as well! loved the old fashioned beautiful cage style elevator! staff very nice.

Loved this hotel. The location was excellent; close to the train station and the Old City. Trams & buses were seconds away. The room was comfortable & spacious - so nice to finally have space to open a suitcase - leave it accessible & even to unpack. The hotel had several common areas where you could hang out. The front desk sold postcards & stamps, as well as water. We had a corner room overlooking the street below, which gave us a great view of the hustle & bustle outside. The water pressure in the shower was amazing! Breakfast was included and was well stocked with coffee/tea, breads, yogurts, fruit, eggs (soft or hard boil), cheeses, fresh squeezed orange juice, and more. The staff was very friendly and helped direct us to our follow-up Covid tests.
