The Fort Garry Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre, Ascend Hotel Collection

Once we were reassigned to a room that did not have the only window facing a solid brick wall about 10 feet away (a "light shaft") everything was A-OK. We originally reserved a room with a Queen bed, and windows on the "front of the hotel" and this is what we were expecting when we went up to the room. However, when I expressed our profound dissatisfaction immediately after seeing the assigned room and returned to the front deck we were upgraded to a King room WITH windows on the east of the hotel overlooking the river, train station, museum, etc..

The check-in clerk originally said that we were being given a "Queen room with windows on the front of the hotel!" Lies are not a good idea!

The second stay was much better than the first stay. We requested a room with no pet smells. Was eventually put on the 9th floor which was good.

The first stay which unfortunately we arrived at Winnipeg station at 2.15am as the Canadian was running 8 hours late. Did not know that the hotel was pet friendly, as I am allergic to pet smells and furs. Was put into a level 2 room 206 which reek in dog odur/smell really bad. Did not sleep much and woke up with 3 bites on my right leg from dog fleas in bed. Took photos to show the staff on my return stay a week later.

The food and service was extraordinary, one of the most lovely and architecturally interesting dining rooms I have had the pleasure to experience, and I have been to the Waldorf Astoria in New York, the Carlisle, and several other grand hotels. The Fort Garry is an architectural gem! Certainly one of a series of exquisite railroad empire hotels built during the early 20th century. It is a lovely confection of marble, terracotta, brass, iron, and plaster with the most highly polished brass elevator doors that gleam with mirrors-like perfection!

Maybe it was too wonderful, but is that a problem? I can't think of anything that hit or hinted at a sour note, as the rooms are comfortable and likely will be continually upgraded with modern amenities as their maintenance plan dictates. Parking was too easy, adjacent to the front desk and dining area. Perhaps the Oval Room dining area was too beautiful and the staff overly accommodating-no they were perfect and food was delicious-how can that be a negative? OK the fact that the City of Winnipeg permitted development of a homely gargantuan building next door is an unpleasant mote in this downtown beauty's setting, but the Fort Garry still dominates the space and overshadows the obtrusive neighbor with its architectural vitality and pure elegance.

Good location in Downtown. Hotel was very clean and the rooms were large and contemporary. Staff were polite and attentive. Felt comfortable in the hotel.

Bathroom was clean but a little dated. Mainly the shower area really. Breakfast was expensive and not to my taste so only ate breakfast once and then found alternative options. On the photos it shows a pool. A pool is available, but it belongs to the apartment building next door (although the two are linked through a walkway). Pool area not as well maintained as the hotel, but still clean and a nice option. Small charge to use it.

Bed was very comfortable and the room was spacious enough for 2 people. It's in walking distance to The Folks. The restaurant service excellent food and cocktails. The staff were very accommodating. Tried the day spa this time and had an excellent massage!

They stopped bringing tea and coffee to your room in the morning. They now service in the lobby which is still fine. The morning delivery to your room, was previously a great touch.

1 The grandness of the décor throughout the hotel is magnificent. The blend of strong lines with understated elegance creates the perfect ambiance of warmth and 'bienvenue'. Thank you to the reservations staff who were so accommodating when the airline forced us to change our travel plans. 2 Our room was very comfortable and spit spot clean. Thanks to the Housekeeping and Room service staff for their gold star service during our stay. 3 We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the exquisite service in The Oval Room.

We would have preferred closet door hinges that did not squeek.

the restaurant setting is beautiful but the staff is fairly green for its upscale image, and the food is downright bad. I ordered an avocado toast for breakfast, which came completely cold out of fridge, served in a deep soup plate. The "toast" was impossible to cut as everything was super-chilled (probably a leftover from the days prior), and there was no space on the deep plate to dismantle the piled-up topping to eat the "toast". For dinner I ordered a sliced iceberg lettuce salad, which consisted of a massive pile of sliced lettuce with a creamy dressing, a few pieces of cut bacon and 1 lonely poached egg lost on that mountain of lettuce. The restaurant deserves 1 star rating at best. The cooking feels more like a high school project, with a lot of effort but a misguided concept.

The location was perfect. The restoration of the hotel is stunning. All of the staff that I encountered were courteous and polite and helpful. The food in the oval room restaurant was excellent. And the comp tickets to a Yuk Yuk’s were a pleasant surprise. Really enjoyed the show!

There was nothing I didn’t like, except perhaps, for the tiny shower!

Beautiful, clean helpful all staff interactions were lovely. Had a late dinner in the restaurant. Server was excellent, knowledgeable made great suggestions. Front desk staff were helpful and friendly. The entire event was great

Construction out front wasn’t ideal but this was City not hotel. Entrances were blocked off so was a bit cumbersome to get to and from.

Staff, accommodations etc were excellent

Problems with breakfast meal. A number of patrons actually left because of delays. Personally we waited 40+min for our order. My spouse has a mobility issue and stairs take considerable time. A notice for wheelchair access was not observed until already pulled in front and because of construction maneuvering was not practical.
