Sorell Hotel Merian

We booked the family suite and loved the set up of the room. A lot have thought has been put into the items that were available for children to make it welcoming, the location of the hotel was fantastic, the size of the room was great and the staff were helpful. The buffet breakfast had a great range and the staff were helpful there too.

Location was great, very central with a balcony looking straight out over the river towards the old town and less than 2 minutes walk to a tram stop with trams running very regularly (and included with the free Basel pass that you get when you stay in a hotel in the city. Buffet breakfast was perfectly good, providing plenty of choice and good quality. The room was modest in size but perfectly comfortable and even the mini-bar was included in the price (and re-stocked each day).

Nothing much. Even the weather was good!

The location was perfectly central, within 1 minute of a tram station, and directly by a bridge crossing the Rhine. The staff were nice and helpful on arrival and also when we had any enquiries. The mattresses were comfortable. The breakfast was fresh and tasty with few but quality options, and the service was excellent all round.

The only thing we didn’t like about the stay was that the rooms are not modern. For the most part this didn’t bother us however our plugs from Germany didn’t fit the sockets that the room had. This was really inconvenient, especially when multiple things needed to be charged or used at the same time. We also had 2 single beds instead of a double which was abit uncomfortable.

The view from the room over the Rhine was fantastic. We loved the sound of the church bells striking the hour. The staff was extremely helpful and the fact that we had the BaselCard saved money on the museums we visited and made the ride to the airport to return home free. The card covers transportation around the city, but we found the old part of the city easily walkable.

We have no real complaints. The room wasn't extremely large but was adequate as we spent most of our time walking around town. We opened the window to enjoy the view, the fresh air and sounds of the old city during the time we spent in the room.

A charming location, my room with a view of the Rhine, and bridge - I’m glad I paid a bit extra. Only a few yards away from frequent buses and trams - good connections to centre and train station, and a handy Coop too (about 8 pm, 50% off sandwiches!). In my room, a well-stocked mini-bar; a coffee-maker/hot water with fresh coffee, teas. In the bathroom, handwash by Rituals of Mehr - a very pleasing scent! A comfortable twin-bed. Also, you get a half-price entry to museums (I visited two - brilliant!) and free travel on local buses and trams. The breakfast selection was outstandingly diverse, and well presented - the best of my Swiss stays. The staff were welcoming and discrete. I would have given the hotel a 9.5 rating, but booking.com don’t do things by halves! I would definitely stay here again.

My only very slight dislike was the shower over the bath. I prefer a stand-alone cubicle. But twas a trifling matter.

We flew in the day before starting a river cruise and chose this hotel for the location. It was so easy to get there by bus and tram from the airport as there is a tram stop just across the street. Check in was a breeze and every staff member was friendly & welcoming. Our room had a balcony with a fabulous view of the Rhine. It was very clean and the bed was comfy. Breakfast was very good with plenty of options. The hair dryer was the best I've EVER had in a foreign hotel. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a short walk to explore the town center and we were able to use the tram system to get to our river cruise ship. Couldn't have picked a better property.

Amazing location, very spacious room and bathroom, free minibar (refilled daily),exceptional cleaning and staff, card to use public transport for free and museum discount. Breakfast was simple but fresh and delicious. I want to emphasize ones again how attentive and service minded and helpful the staff at hotel are-incredible service!

No air-conditioning in rooms. It was over 30C outside during my visit and room was like an oven. Fans are provided but don’t help even a bit + so noisy during the night making little difference in helping fight the heat and making it impossible to sleep. So despite comfortable room and bed sleeping was pure suffer and impossible which is shame as hotel is really amazing otherwise.

This hotel is a real gem in Basel. It is in an excellent location; right by the river Rhine and very near tram and bus stops so you can get everywhere easily. The staff were helpful and friendly;our room was comfortable and clean with a great river view. The free items in the minibar were a lovely surprise, as was the excellent breakfast buffet each morning. I would thoroughly recommend a stay at this hotel for your visit to Basel.

Love the location of this hotel with its riverside restaurant overlooking the Rhine. And our room had a wonderful view [see photo]. Much appreciated the underground parking on the hotel site, although at 29 CHF / day it is a bit pricey. Nevertheless, it does take the pain out of arriving by car in a part of the city where parking would be a problem. Breakfast was good and plentiful, the breakfast room was very spacious.

No air conditioning! A desk top ventilator fan only. I would have liked a firmer mattress, and a bigger bathroom. But these minor points would not prevent me from returning, overall we liked the hotel and enjoyed the river bank experience.

It is always a pleasure to stay at the Sorrell Hotel right o the Rhine river bank. There is a garage where we can store our bikes and of course being on the Rhine in summer means just stepping out of the hotel in bathing gear and floating down the Rhine for a cool off and taking in the sights and sounds on both sides of the river. In the evening we enjoyed dinner on the terrace watched the sunset , and then joined many others who were strolling down the lovely river bank walk . The Sorrell is taking a step in the right direction with a limit on food waste policy, which means avoiding too much food being presented at breakfast and rather offering guests a choice to order Well done :-)
