Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth Gunwharf Quays, an IHG Hotel

The location couldn’t have been better as my brother was leaving on a year-round, round-the-world yacht race from there on Sept 3. The boats were there at the end of the wharf just about 1/4 mile away. And the hotel is at the end of a high scale mall with LOTS of restaurants, pubs, cafes. Linsey at the front desk was amazing and super helpful, as was her young male night shift co-worker (Phil?). LOVED having the bar and food till 2:00 a.m. for those of us who are insomniacs!

The fact that the elevator button on the 3rd floor was broken for several days. We could go up to the 3rd floor but we couldn’t go down.

The location of the hotel was perfect for exploring the Historic Dockyard, Old Portsmouth and Southsea by foot. Parking was easy but there is a fair walk from the carpark to the hotel. Parking is validated at the hotel so the cost is minimal. We felt very welcomed by staff when we arrived and were given vouchers to use for little treats later during our stay. There was a good selection of food at breakfast and this is available for a good long time meaning that we never struggled for anywhere to sit. The room was clean and comfortable.

The room was smaller than we are used to for a family of four with very little space to move around the double bed and the sofa bed. The bathroom was also a little small but having the bathroom door double-up as the toilet door helped with this.

From the moment we stepped into the hotel you were made t feel welcome. A member of staff was there offering a refreshing drink and a biscuit to enjoy whist waiting to check in on a very hot day. We were even offered a free ice cream. We were swiftly checked in and were told of the special offers available to us from the shops and restaurants on Gunwharf Quays. Arrived in our room which was cool with the aircon, bright, clean and well proportioned and overlooked the courtyard of Gunwharf Quays. Our reason for staying was to start our holiday a day early on the way to Gatwick the following day.

There was nothing we did not like. I believe the whole team put a lot of effort into ensuring happy guests.

Excellent location for visiting the main tourist attractions and shopping. Quite a good selection for breakfast and possibly as a tourist it would have been nice not to have a 9.30am deadline during the week. Good taxi service arranged via reception and didn’t seem overly expensive. Bar facilities up to 2am. Ironing facilities in the room. Great car parking arrangement.

I don’t normally like a shower curtain but as the shower tray/space was a good size, ok on this occasion. The shower head, tap mixer fittings and riser fixture were a little tired. Because the weather was so good it would have been nice to have had a small fridge in the room.

From our arrival at Reception we felt nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Our grandchildren were offered ice cream , a game with sweets prizes at check in! There was a dedicated table with games and colouring for them in the foyer which we used to relax and enjoy as a family. The breakfast had a good selection including vegetarian sausages and a gluten free section and a ‘grab bag ‘ opportunity if in A rush. Fresh fruit on offer too 👏The beds were comfortable and two of our party wanted to take the duvets home - they didn’t! 😂 We were all very impressed with Holiday Inn Express at Gunwharf Quay and would definitely use again, being in the centre of the complex. Super close to the harbour, and within 5 mins walk to The Mary Rose museum etc, plus The Spinnaker Tower is just a few minutes away from this conveniently located hotel. Our room was clean, tidy and had all that we needed for our 2 day stay - fab comfy bed, tea/coffee facilities, lovely shower, tv, hairdryer, towels … you know, all those things that make us feel comfortable away from home. Breakfast (which was included in room price) was yummy, with lots of choice to start your day off deliciously right. The hotel is spotless and the staff were personable and helpful.

Our room (344) overlooked one lively part of The Quays shopping/eating outlet, and being opposite a fun pub and casino, meant that we heard all that fun …lol… and especially heard it at the end of the evening. I’m a light sleeper, so it’s not hard for me to have a disturbed nights sleep, but even hubs got woken up by the fun-loving revellers! That said, it didn’t ruin our stay, and next time, I’d just bring ear plugs! 😜

the staff were incredible and the location was perfect as it was on the flat and the car park wasn’t too far away. plus it was free for first 24hr There was a wide choice of places to eat all with discounts. we were literally on the corner of all the shops This made it perfect for my mum who struggles to walk The seafront is 10 mins away and so was the historic dock yard We went to see the Mary Rose as this again is accessible for those with walking difficulties. then the breakfast wax incredible despite thinking we would only have a continental breakfast we were pleasantly surprised to see bacon eggs beans and sausages great stay thank you

the hotels air con wasn’t working correctly and kept blowing out hot air We couldn’t open the window so in the end had to turn off the air con and Hope for the best We weren’t the only people struggling the couple in the next room to ours also had the same problem Despite reporting it it was no better the following night

Fabulous location, right in the heart of lovely Gunwharf. Amazing reception staff, played a great game with our little one and gave her an Easter egg, very sweet and a great start to a little overnight holiday. Very easy check in/ check out service. Free parking which is amazing, especially as the car park is usually very expensive. Super helpful staff came and made up the sofa bed for us, very kind and accommodating. Great options for free teas and coffees for the room, wonderful touch. The friendly staff made this stay very nice indeed.

Out of date decor, especially the bathrooms. Rooms aren’t very big, but they are fine and well presented. Breakfast finishing at 9:30am, extremely disappointed by this as it’s very early especially for people who are travelling as a family but we ate at Cosy club instead for brunch and it was lovely! very close by to the hotel, and many options for food and shopping all around.

The beds were super comfy and clean. The staff was super friendly (especially the waiter at breakfast) and also the little ones were taken care off with little goodies. Location is fab inside Gunwharf and in super close proximity to the train station. :)

The bathroom really needs renovation… there were black stains around the tiles… all just a bit old and shabby… our toilet actually also blocked and the room was super snug, especially for a little family… The breakfast was ok on selection but sadly everything tasted so bland… a lot of food went to waste from other tables as well… I mean how can you get pancakes wrong?! or something as simple as scrambled eggs? Even the kids left their pancakes behind… coffee from the instant machine was terrible… such a shame really…
