Hotel Du Simplon

The hotel was in a good location for walking around the heart of Lyon. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. The lobby was attractive. We reserved a parking spot (for additional cost) which was extremely valuable since we arrived around midnight, and parking on the street was challenging.

This was November, and the only way to cool our room down was to open a window, which allowed street noise in along with the cool air. (Our experience is that hotels typically prohibit Air Conditioning from being turned on in the winter months, and this one was no exception.) We were a bit disappointed that our reserved parking spot required us to move the car by noon (same as check out time of the room.) The alternative public parking option ("Perrache") suggested by the front desk staff was a bit intimidating, and we chose not to attempt parking in that multi-purpose facility. Bottom line: for us, it was challenging to drive and park in the dense area around the hotel.

Staff were very helpful. I asked for restaurant recommendations and received a handwritten list of 4 or 5 establishments. The top one was one I had seen myself when googling. I went there and was very satisfied (except I ate too much). The location of the hotel was also good, being close to railway station and pedestrian precinct. There was also a good breakfast served from 6 am, which suited me perfectly to catch an early train.

The bathroom was very small (ca 2 square metres) and basically a plastic box mounted in a corner. Everything worked fine, but the complete floor was wet after taking a shower. Although on a relatively quiet street, there was quite a bit of traffic noise early in the morning from delivery and refuse trucks.

The hotel's location is great, easy walk along the river Rhone and also to Lyon's historic centre. There are plenty of shops, bakeries, restaurants and cafes nearby. The breakfast buffet has a fantastic selection. The room is large and comfortable bed, small but very modern and clean bathroom. Internet worked fine. Overall I loved my stay and would book again. Staff in general were great, especially the lady who did both my check in and check out, I regret not having taken her name for a special mention here. I thought the hotel offers great value for money too.

The air conditioning wasn't working on the first day, but I was informed of that and the hotel offered free breakfast as an apology, which was great customer service. However, even after the air conditioner was fixed, there was a constant noise in my room (25), which made sleeping a little challenging, so I had to use earplugs. I mentioned this to a member of the reception (not the great one who checked me in/out), but unfortunately she just dismissed as "no idea of what the noise could be" instead of getting someone from maintenance to go and check that out. Apart from that, a great stay.

Nice small hotel in old building but renovated. Welcoming comfortable entry and lounge area. 24 reception, staff friendly and helpful. Quiet at night. Lots of restaurants and cafes nearby and nice park at the end of the street with market stalls on Sunday. Close to major shopping areas and also specialty shops. Walking distance to old town, tram and metro quite close also. Breakfast generous.

Room was small, thick duvet even though weather was hot. Bathroom modern and well appointed but small. Toilet lid broken ie. not attached.

This was a great and affordable place to stay. I was travelling with my mom (senior) and aunt (late 50's). They don't require extravagant accommodations, but do have very high expectations of cleanliness and being in a safe location- Hotel Simplon checked both boxes. It was nice that it had a little bit of character too. The staff were friendly and I will be recommending this hotel to friends who are travelling to Lyon.

This hotel is well located and is excellent value for money. Parking is cheap (16 € per day) for the city centre and it is a big plus of this hotel. Remember you MUST book this though. On street parking is free between 19:00-9:00 if you get stuck. I think I got an upgraded room as I booked a single and got a double instead (room 25). Room is air conditioned which is nice during August. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The room is small (I wonder how much smaller the single would have been!), but fine as I don’t spend much time in hotel rooms anyway. There is no kettle or fridge. The bathroom was tiny, no joke, it was barely bigger than an aeroplane toilet! Taller and bigger people will struggle. I always travel with earplugs and they were useful as sometimes noise carries from hallway / other rooms / road. You have to check in first to get access to the parking space, and they say you can use their delivery space when you check in... except it was blocked off and had a motorbike in it when I arrived. Luckily there was a free space down the road. This sounds like I’m complaining a lot, but I’m not... overall if you come prepared, this is a pleasant stay and I would book again.

It was by chance I came to this hotel and it turned out to be a great experience. Very lovely happy helpful staff.  I rang the reception about adjusting the air condition (AC) temperature in the room and the staff came to help very quickly. Top service. Didn't expect AC in this hotel star category. Was a great bonus in this hot weather. Clean, comfortable  AC room. WIFI worked well. I had to leave early at 5.30am, at the check out, the staff asked if I wanted breakfast as he was already setting up breakfast at that early hour (Never in my experience even a hotel with many stars would offer breakfast this early. I was very impressed). Excellent location, 2 mins walk from the Perrache train station and to the shopping areas Bellcour. Plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes. I highly recommend it.

The breakfasts were good, but they ran out of several items and didn’t replace them quickly. The dining room was tight quarters, but clean and comfortable. Same with the rooms - quite small, but clean and the beds were comfortable.

Good location and great value for the money. We were comfortable.

The checkout process for guests with parking. We accidentally took the key and drove about an hour away. The staff noted this has been an issue in the past. Although it was our fault, a simple sign, an additional verbal reminder or updating the checkout process could help with the inconvenience of forgetting the garage key fob.

The location is very good, near Place Carnot, with the possibility to reach the historic center with a pleasant pedestrian street. Also, the recaption is available 24/7 and the level of cleanness of the room is excellent. Finally, the breakfast offers good products.

The room is slightly little, but especially the bathroom is too small.
