Protea Hotel by Marriott Midrand

The staff are phenomenal! Have never been anywhere where ALL the staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly. We had been given a different room to the one we had booked, and they immediately sorted it out, found us another, and gave us an upgraded room. When we called room service, our phone was giving issues, so the lady in room Service reported it on her own accord. They immediately came and replaced the phone. Spotless rooms, substantial servings of delicious food, it is the ideal spot in Midrand. We can not commend the staff enough from the Reception to the Room Service, Technical, Security at the gate, Restaurant and Wait Staff they were incredible. The only place we will stay in Midrand from now on.

I have stayed in a 5 star hotel in Dubai prior to my trip to SA so my standards for any hotel I was to stay in following that were always going to be either at par or beyond my experience in Dubai. I was therefore initially somewhat apprehensive about Protea prior to arriving and following reassurance from my Brother in Law to be, I agreed to book a family room in the Protea for 6 nights. I must admit that I was shell shocked with the excellent milieu of the hotel upon arrival, both outside and inside. There was a young lad who was often the concierge during the day and he was the most lovely of all people at the hotel as he always made me and my family comfortable by interacting with us each time he saw us as well as gave us advice about the local area and Joburg. Our room was cleaned on a daily basis, with new bedding and linen provided which was always fresh. Whilst we experienced load shedding (which is the norm in SA) it was only for a few minutes before the power switched back on. The hotel is a very secure place, which is always a major factor to consider for foreign visitors and my family's safety was rest assured during our entire stay. It was useful to have amenities such as the spar, gym and the pool as we were travelling as a family consisting of a 10yr old and a teenager who is into his fitness. The food was generally great, especially the breakfast and I will most certainly recommend the omelette that is freshly prepared by the young man (can't remember his name) who was behind the serving counter on most days.

Some of the staff could do with some training on being cordial and welcoming. A smile and a greeting does go a long way, particularly to European nationals and I feel that was one aspect that was missing from the majority of the staff. There was one supervisor on one evening who did not seem best pleased with the fact that I complained about the evening meal which had been served to my Mother and Aunt who had just arrived from a flight and were very hungry on the day. The supervisor did agree to remove the two meals off the bill, so I wont hold that up against him

The garden was breathtaking, the staff was very friendly from the reception to the rooms. Requests made to the reception were attended to swiftly. The food was very nice and well presented. Overall I enjoyed my stay and I would come back again.

If cleaning time can be managed properly because we had staff wanting to clean our room 13:00 that was a bit disappointing because I would have prefared them a little earlier.

The cleaning genetors wasn't friendly at all..esp when you ask for something..i asked for milk and when cleaning lady came thru she asked me if I didn't check the fridge but I said to her I did but there was nothing only to find out that there was a container they put in the fridge with milk..I wouldn't have known that such a hotel can use a medicine like bottle to store milk..any way when I opened that bottle the very milk was OFF...I took it up with reception lady and she did sort it out..but we ended up going to the near by mall to buy our own coffee,sugar and milk just for peace sake.

The room was spacious and lovely. I loved that the room wasn't over crowded,it was minimalist which I love.I also enjoyed the variety in the breakfast buffet.

The comforter was torn from what looks like a hot iron. I was disappointed in the fact that we didn't have keys and because we didn't like being escorted in and out, it meant we ordered room service for dinner which we would have preferred not too.

The staff was friendly, polite and accommodating. The location was great for me. I would recommend it for someone needing to stay in Midrand. The dinner food service was delicious.

I think offering more face towels/wash cloths for guests. Also, the electricity flickering off if there's anything that you can do.

It was one of the most pleasant experiences I've had for a stay away from home. From the security at the front gate, staff at the front door, reception, housekeeping, catering staff and the restaurant manager. Everyone contributed to a memorable stay. I will definitely use your hotel in future.

Absolutely nothing. It was more than I had hoped for.

Definitely the best part of the experience was the staff. Every single one of them make eye contact and greet. They are all super friendly and helpful. Very accommodating too

Only comment was that the 2 point plug next to the bed was not working so I couldn't charge my phone there, only at the desk area. No other improvements

the chef was amazing i ordered fish and the taste was not so good but it seems like the fish was refrigerated for a longer period, i was called and my meal was replaced with a very nice meal, and i have to repeat the problem was that the fish was refrigerated for a longer period not the preparation of the fish.

everything was perfect

The location is amazing.. totally lived my space. The quiet space in the mile.if Midrand was unmatched. Of course the lawn view from.my room.

There was no flat iron in my room. I kept calling Housekeeping for one every morning.
