Quinta Da Penha De Franca

Old world charm in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea. Small but adequate pool set in fabulous gardens. Really helpful and friendly staff in all areas. A most relaxing atmosphere and a quiet retreat. Only stayed one week but will be longer next time. We are definitely returning.

We had no real issues at all. Tea making equipment was in the bedroom but have to supply or buy tea, coffee and milk. No toiletries provided except a small moisturiser.

I booked a 5-day break from blustry Brighton to get some sun and visit Madeira for the first time and was delighted to find this hotel on the website. What a wonderful place - the reception area is large, with a lovely lounge - comfy seating, card table, babygrand piano , plants. Theresa greeted us, smiling and was very informative without our stay, as were all the staff. Our “ garden room “ was tucked away in a group of four, so was very quiet, with a leafy outlook, which we loved . The rooms in the main hotel are larger, with great views of pool, sea and the grounds. The room was cleaned daily by a friendly lady. Breakfast was great with fresh fruit and a good assortment of breads, pastries etc and omelettes were cooked to order. Seating was indoors or outside on the terrace. The pool and gardens are lovely & relaxing and our daily swims were refreshing ! We also sat by the lower pool at the sister hotel, but found it windier down there. The walk along the promenade into Funchal is about 20 mins, with lots of statues, flowers, entertainers and a great choice of coffee bars and restaurants. We found the market on our first day ( Sat) , such a delight and watched the cable car go up the hill but it looked quite misty up there so didnt try it. There are several bars and eateries on the street outside the main entrance to the hotel - we particularly liked the Prince Albert across the road and the Pestana pub at the top of the hill on the left. Camera de Lobos is worth a visit for a great fish lunch and is a 2€ bus ride away . Transport to and from the hotel was via booking.com - so efficient, cheap and friendly, helpful drivers. We had a great time and hope to go back to this lovely venue. Thankyou everyone.

We ate at the hotel on our first night and were very disappointed by the bland, tasteless vegetables . The potatoes tasted like tinned ones ! The fish was good and its obviously difficult gauging how many people to cook for but deffo not good enough.

Staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. Very good breakfast. Room was generous in terms of space. Good sea view from balcony. Able to use the large swimming pool of sister hotel next door.

Quite costly for hotel rate. The old fashioned key system is absurd with threats of fines and change of lock charges in event of key loss. Why not convert key system to a modern electronic version? The safe is only usable via a key obtained from reception. The hotel provides a kettle but charges for in room coffee...not really acceptable for a 4 star hotel.

The reception staff were lovely, allowed us to book in early, and took us to our room. The room was lovely too. Two large single beds, the bed linen was too notch as were the towels in the bathroom . There was a luggage room to put the cases in in the room. Great air-conditioning too. The staff at breakfast could not have been more helpful. Breakfast was more than adequate .... and the hot food was certainly hot. The fresh fruit was great.

Two pools, one near sea and access to the water. Restaurant fine with standard Madeiran cuisine. Western edge of hotel district and access to plenty of restaurants within 20 minutes walk and good location generally. Charming setting and gardens give a character set apart from the many soulless mega hotels in western Funchal. Generally friendly staff. Very good value for money, was half the price of similar options at the time of booking

A little run down, rooms a bit stuffy and in need of redecoration although comfortable. Unexpected small charges such as tea in room not free and forced laundry service for pressing as iron and ironing board would not be provided. Did not stop overall very good comparative value for money.

Beautiful location right by the ocean. Important to note that if you book a sea view room, you’ll likely end up at their sister hotel Quinta Da Penha de Franca do Mar (just a street away).

Misunderstanding with the booking wasn’t handled properly by one of the staff. Upon checkout, Paulina P (or Paula P, don’t fully remember) was very efficient and quickly sorted the misunderstanding.

Amazing Quinta, much more traditional than the big imposing hotels around it. Beautiful garden setting, very well cared for, flowers and trees and grass all around. Nice pool area, vut needs a bit of tlc, great for a refreshing swim tho and as it was not busy it was perfect. Location was excellent, lots of choice of restaurants on the doorstep within 2 mins walk. And a 10 min walk into Funchal centre along the seafront. The room we had was a garden view with terrace and it was in a great position with quick access to everything. It was right by the restaurant and kitchen area so xoukd gey a bit noisy with clattering plates etc but didn't bother us. Beds and pillows were amazing, we all slept really well, even those with back or neck problems. We chose a double bed set up and it was like a super king, loved it. Nice terrace doors to fling open morning and evening. Kids went to bed, pulled doors shut and we sat on the terrace with drinks from Joe's bar. Excellent solution to being in a hotel with kids. Aircon worked well if nweded. Bathroom was a good size and functional. Bath with shower over and a shower curtain that sticks to you... but that was just a small issue. Breakfast was nice, juice and coffee however not great, we bought cartons of juice from supermarket down road took tuose with us to breakfast. Food was very nice, good selection of hot, cold, fresh pastries and a different traditional one each day like the pastel de nata. Nice fresh crusty bread as well as fresh fruit, charcuterie and yoghurts. Good parking facilities for your hire car. Friendly reception. Overall we were very happynwith our choice and had a great uoliday to celebrate a special birthday. The birthday girl even got a bottle of bubbly and tartlets in her room from the hotel on the day, wow. Now that depicts good friendly customer service to me. I work in a hotel and nothing is given away for free, so the gesture was very much appreciated.

The shower curtain that sticks to you. We booked the hotel specifically for a heated pool so we could swim regularly and kids could spend time playing in the pool but it was not being heated at the time we were there, maybe it was warm enough in their opinion as it was 23c but that still feels very cold getting in and you can't stay in and play for very long, kids came out eventually with blue lips after persevering as long as they could. That was a shame but no deal breaker and better for the environment, so it didn't worry us too much.

the only thing that maybe could have been better would be - a bit more variation of food at breakfast - more vegetarian options for dinner (but the whole of Madeira was not great for vegetarians) - towels at both pools rather than having to fetch them from the main pool (so as you can see, these are quite small things and only writing them for some balance - it was a very lovely place to stay)

Lovely older style hotel with friendly helpful staff. We stayed B&B and breakfast every morning was an absolute joy. Location is great and just a 10min walk into Funchal and great restaurants and bars very close by. We used the quinta swimming pool (salt water) every day even though we had the option of using the larger pool at the sister hotel. On checking out they were happy for us to leave the car in their car park until we caught our flight later. All in all a great place to stay and we would not hesitate to return again.

We stayed in one of the rooms in a single storey block of 4 behind the restaurant. The location was nice and very quiet. But the downside was that the rooms were quite dark due to the orientation and the overhang over the terrace. Saying that I would still stay there again as it was very private.

Full of character unlike the Quinta daMar where we were initially, in room 202, we didn't like the location above the restaurant or the modern vibe. We relocated to room73 with a lovely balcony overlooking the pool and ocean beyond. The room is spacious with two armchairs, black out curtains a mini bar and a well designed large bathroom with double basin - luxury! Quality bedding with comfortable bed, too..The room was quiet and well designed with enormous closets and a raised shelf for cases.. The Quinta is relaxed with amazing staff, very good buffet breakfast is served on the terrace and we had dinner there once which was excellent, good value compared to many nearby restaurants. The waiting staff are efficient and charming.
