Reid's Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Madeira

I just wanted to say how simply amazing I think this hotel is. Simply the top of the line.As I sit here writing this I tear up. EVERYONE from the front desk, to the bell hop to the people who brought me my breakfast, the gentlemen in the restaurant and especially Elia Silva, who loved her job so much she sang while she was making my bed. And last but but far not least, I was so homesick I want to go back home so badly and the manager let me cancel my third night. I’m still amazed, simply amazed at this sublime hotel. and jeez wiz I didn’t even mention how beautiful and well appointed the Palace was. I just hope you know that there are people out there who so appreciates what you do for people. This is from the bottom of my heart

Absolutely NOTHING

We were overwhelmed at the unexpected extras provided with the room, free soft drinks in the mini bar, snacks, Tea and coffee (nespresso) welcome decanter of Madeira wine on arrival. Birthday gift of flowers and champagne for my partner from the hotel. Excellent view over the harbour. Breakfast by the pool was the best buffet I have had, so much choice from the hot cooked section, fresh fruit, cured meats & smoked fish, cheese, cakes, also choice from the "to order" section and champagne if wanted. The location was at the top of the hill and not particularly suitable for anyone with walking difficulties however the hotel provide free courtesy ride into the centre of Funchal. We also took afternoon tea on the terrace and for $45 worth every cent

Absolutely nothing to dislike

The service was excellent. Possibly the best I've experienced in a hotel anywhere. The choice and quality of food was excellent. We really enjoyed the old charm of the hotel, old photos dotted about etc. The entrance hall, cocktail bar, main balcony (serving afternoon teas), reception and the breakfast area were particularly impressive. The area by the diving boards was particularly nice to sun bath and to escape the pool.

Shower curtain in the bath. Some of the bathroom tiles looked a bit tired. The wicker furniture on the main balcony was tired and uncomfortable. Some of the tiles around the pool and external shower area were stained - probably by chlorine. These are easy fixed and the hotel doesn't require a full re-fit at all. Some clever replacement of certain fittings would be sufficient - just details to sharpen the look. I'd be happy to pop back and help make a list of everything needed. It would be a shame for example to replace the marble vanity units in the bathrooms...but some of the tiles need updating. Getting everything next level would NOT require a major refit at all.

From the moment we walked through the door we knew we were in for an incredible stay. The care and attention to detail is out of this world… the staff are so beautiful and fun loving. Our breakfasts by the pool were a highlight as were the late night drinks on the balcony. The ocean was warm and the beds were so comfortable. It is a home away from home. Thank you Reid’s… and special thanks to John the concierge for arranging so many wonderful itineraries!!!

We stayed for 11 nights in august/September with our two children, 6 months and 6 years. the hotel is set in beautiful botanical surroundings, has great food, lovely staff and lovely guests. we also stayed at the savoy palace during our stay in Funchal and the overall feel and quality of Reid’s was far superior.

A little dated in areas but arguably this adds to the historic charm of the place.

From the moment we arrived when the valet parked our car and the sweets that were given to us for our children as we left, my wife and I were blown away by the people that made our stay so special at Reid’s Palace. The hotel is incredible steeped in history in a beautiful setting. The photos don’t do it justice! The hotel is stunning itself however for us the service was impeccable. They go out their way to provide you with the best holiday in a professional but friendly way. We loved every minute of our stay and already booking or next trip. Madeira is an amazing island and worth a visit!

That we had to leave.

This is an extremely well run property and all the staff are excellent.The beds are superbly comfortable,everything is exceptionally clean and the sun beds and parasols are very attractive.The breakfasts are particularly good with a beautiful selection of fresh food.This is an old hotel but has been updated sympathetically.

Not that keen on the music played by the pianist in the bar .

We absolutely LOVED our stay at the Reid’s palace!  This is such a magical & historic hotel. The service was exceptional. The breakfast was amazing, so many options and the nicest servers.  The staff were so helpful and knowledgeable about the area! Shout out to amazing Sara👏🏽We also loved our dinner at their Italian restaurant  on-their gorgeous terrace! Definitely make a reservation to go there!

Nothing

Truly beautiful hotel in an exceptional setting. We particularly enjoyed the views and the unusual, slightly retro Sea baths. Excellent breakfast buffet. Restaurant staff, pool, housekeeping and bar personnel are just outstanding, always with a wonderful smile!

Front of house was a little patchy, also the New Years Eve dinner was frankly overpriced and some of the rooms were very noisy during the night (thumping bass kind of noisy). The Eve of the Eve dinner however was truly delightful.

spacious, lots of dining options, excellent pools and gardens, lots of excellent secluded areas to sit or sun lounge. Especially liked the seawater tidal pool area.

lack of three pin plugs by the bedside. there being only 1 armchair in our room, meant one of us had to sit on the bed or on desk chair.
