Hotel Don Manuel

Since I have time on my hands, this one will get wordy. Bottom line- place is comfortable to stay in. It has a convenient kitchen area and it’s positioned where you can have your coffee outside and enjoy the air of the Cantabria sea-North Atlantic air. It’s in one of the safest areas in a city that has a secure feeling everywhere. Asturias is a special place to me so I’m biased. But I decided to return to this place again and it is seldom that I write a second comment on the same place. But I had some unwarranted concern about my bill and the management there went way out of their way to explain a situation to me clearly even though it was an unwarranted concern anyway. I was confused about how my bill got paid because I had used different sources to get a booking. The place handles things extremely professionally. I’ve been so impressed with how Spain in general takes much pride in their service industry and this place is just another prime example. Sure the place might not have the latest up to date outlet of everything in a world that is moving with unprecedented speed technology but it definitely has the most essential things in place. You can feel right away that this place has had a long history in the service sector. Quiet competence.

Even on the third floor the noise from revellers on football match day was extreemly loud well into the small hours.

The location is awesome. You are in walking distance of Gijon center (you are actually in the very center of it, it's great!!!), and you are able to explore the town by foot. The staff was very friendly and helpful, I specially appreciated how quick the reception was to checkin and checkout and also in providing the directions we asked for.

I was expecting a LOT more from a 4-star hotel and the price I was paying for the room. The hotel itself shows its age. The first impact upon entry was not great, with an outdated look and a bad smell (from cleaning products I assumed). The room was really noisy, due to nearby neighbors (not hotel guests I assumed, but the actual building next to the hotel), and we got no luck sleeping after 7AM due to the light entering through the window and other guests waking up - ALL the noises from bathrooms, people opening/closing doors and talking in the hallway. The pillows available were also very uncofortable, too bug for the small bed. The breakfast should be more varied, but I must say the quality of what was provided was good. The breakfast location was also not pleasant - in a sidewalk-facing coffee, which apparently is open to everyone (not only hotel guests).
