Hotel La Tonnarella

We absolutely loved this place. Our 5 nights there were probably our most special of our 5 weeks in Italy. Our room was spacious and full of character and opened onto our own huge deck (40m2 we reckon) with views across Napoli bay to Naples, Vesuvius and Pompeii and the full length of Sorrento town. A fantastic place to relax, sub bathe and watch the hundreds of boats doing their thing. The restaurant (open air) had the same views and really good food. The staff were super friendly. And the private beach with cafe was beautiful. It was an easy 10 minute walk to the main street and restaurants/shopping which we enjoyed. Totally recommend La Tonnarella.

Nothing at all

great location with nice views, breakfast was nice with good amount of choices. the room was kept tidy and the hotel staff was very accommodation letting us sitting in for a drink out of the usual lunch-dinner times.

bare in mind you have to pay extra for omelettes and French toasts and pancakes 8-10€ each and fresh orange juice (6€) if you choose that for breakfast. there were other options so we didn’t go for the extras. they also have a private beach that you meet to pay l 32€ for 2 people for a whole day. this is the same as in sorrento, Wi-Fi was unfortunately password protected and not available at the beach and whilst we were there people with their kayaks arrived to the private beach taking it nearly over and there was no staff around to ask them to leave. we also found the bed was a little too hard as other guests said before. it was a little hard to find the reception when we arrived as there are two entries to the hotel.

All staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, the hotel exceeded expectations with the style, facilities, staff, location. It’s very authentic Italian and super close to the centre of Sorrento and easy and safe to walk there at any time of day (even after a long day of walking around Pompeii). The food is exceptional and perfect having a terrace to ourselves. Also, the views from the breakfast room and restaurant terrace are exceptional! So stunning to have breakfast overlooking the sea, and dinner viewing a pink sunset - made the experience there very special indeed. Worth the money!

The only improvement for me would be the beds to be softer and different pillows. The pillows were feather so they moved as your head settles in and hurt my neck, but pillow and mattress preference is very personal.

They asked for extra charges for a lot of things (which are basics in other hotels) for an example in the breakfast you should pay extra charges if you need omelette with mushrooms or other special omelette, you should pay around 30 euro for using the beach, and more if you need a towel and seat there. The beach is very small, can cause light injuries because of the sharp rocks, no activities there. The breakfast should be enhanced, poor variety. Transport from hotel to city center and from city center to hotel.

Our corner room, which to be clear probably was the most expensive, offered a spectacular, 270-degree view from the private terrace (see attached photo of Marina Grande Sorrento). The bus stop to/from Sorrento is less than 100m away. The restaurant, Radici, was superb and has an outstanding view as well.

Our last night was disturbed by a lot of noise from the restaurant directly above, then disturbed by a party on the terrace of the room next door. We should haver called the night manager to get these problems addressed, but we did not. Advice to the hotel: Get rid of the giant flat screen TV at the foot of the bed blocking the view. I cannot imagine anyone choosing this room and wanting to watch TV.

La Tonnarella has the location to die for - "see Naples and die" - with sweeping panoramic views across the whole of the Bay of Naples. Cocktails on the roof terrace as the sun goes down were a unique pleasure. Indeed we chose the Tonnarella for those reasons, and despite the weather's worst efforts, it lived up to its promise. It's a traditional hotel, built around 1900, with a very pleasant quiet atmosphere, well suited to our age-group. It probably isn't the right place for those seeking more sparkle and noise, especially as it's 20 minutes' walk from the centre of town. Nevertheless, it suited us ideally. Arriving quite late by boat from Amalfi we dined in the hotel on our first evening. The food was good, supported by a nice wine list and well priced. The staff are excellent, very helpful and efficient. Nothing good in Sorrento is cheap, and viewed against that scale the Tonnarella is fairly priced, especially if you take its stunning location into account. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Our only problem was that the mattress of our enormous bed was fitted with some kind of impermeable cover, which caused heating and discomfort. We truly loathe those things!

The room was huge with a very large private terrace overlooking the bay of Naples with fabulous views of Sorrento, the coast, and of course Vesuvius. Sunsets were spectacular. The common areas and restaurant where we ate breakfast featured the same panoramic views we had from our room. The whole place is spotless and spacious. Breakfast was perfect with varieties of fresh fruits, baked goods, eggs, and lots more. The service was super. This is a small hotel with a top notch staff that all seem to love what they do and are happy to help their guests. We got good guidance on local eateries and attractions and were pleased to find a lot of options within walking distance. We also liked being so close to Positano by way of the scenic route above the hotel. There are multiple stretches of that road where you can see off to both sides of the peninsula at the same time. The hotel is located just out of the crowded city center, so the private beach seems even more special and hidden. The hotel itself is quite far above the sea but there is an elevator to access the beach. In all, we loved this hotel. It has an understated elegance to it. It was spacious and luxurious without being opulent. A perfect 10.

Excellent view, beautiful al fresco area with gorgeous night views of the coastline and nightly firework displays. The breakfast was served timely and excellent value with plenty of choice. Infact all meals were delicious with exceptional staff interactions and wine advice.

The only issue was the lack of a shower facilities - it was a bath with hand shower which was not ideal.

Great location and view of Sorrento and Vesuvius. 15 minutes to the main city centre and 20 to the local beach. We loved the restaurant and the breakfast. The room was luxurious and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The beach was a nice option but the water was a little rough and not as clear as the other beaches (the water was clean, it’s just an optics thing). The rooms got a bit cold because we were not able to control the air conditioning ourselves.
