Lawrences Hotel

We received a warm welcome by Eduardo, who was very kind and helpful. The suite was spacious and had all the amenities to make our stay unforgettable. The breakfast was rich with a lot of options to choose from. The hotel is located a few minutes walk from the historical center of Sintra.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions we could not have dinner because it had to be pre-ordered 48 hours in advance.

The location was Great and Eduardo went out of his way to assist us with booking in early and gave us a fabulous room by the name of William Beckley

Outstanding service of the staff. Clean and proper rooms, with a bath . Suites and some rooms have magnificent views . Friendly staff , all very helpful. Diner is a must! High quality and the Gents who did the service in the restaurant are truly stars in service and etiquette. High standard, formal and friendly. Leg of lamb super tender, and the desserts .... O.m.g.. never had a cake 🍰 and pie like that.. And breakfast.. do it! Youll feel like a time traveler with damast napkins, fruits, cakes, scrambled eggs , pie, toast.. and so on and on.. 10+ on all points.

Location is good being very central, walk to main square and many sites. Comfortable, large room, great breakfast. Staff are excellent!!

Limited parking and now you cannot drive a private car in the old town or to Peña Palace. Parking is impossible in the main town area. Even if you can drive it’s incredibly hard and nerve racking. This is a Sintra problem, not the hotel. Streets are narrow, winding and busy with traffic.

We were upgraded to the Lord Byron suite which had a spacious, charming sitting room with a balcony and great views. The location at one end of the main street in the old, upper village was a perfect place from which to walk to the Quinta da Regaleira and for the wooded trail hike up past the Castelo da Mours and on to Pena Palace. The breakfast buffet offerings the day of our stay were limited however we had options off an a la carte menu which were very well prepared and nicely served.

Super friendly staff. Breakfast was good, as you can expect. We had to fill out a form in advance of what we wanted for breakfast, due to COVID restrictions. It was a pleasant breakfast. Got sliced fruits, nicely fried egg and bacon, pain au chocolate/croissant and nice coffe and orange juice, you could also have chosen youghurt with fruits and granola and other things if you wanted. Room was very spacious due to upgrade to suite. It had a nice original touch with rustique feeling but not worn down in any sense. The old style had been preserved. Bed was comfortable with two big pillows each which were medium to soft in hardness. View is to the backyard with a nice forest outside, location is superb with a hilly, steep terrain it lies on the slope which gives you a nice panoramic feeling. We weren’t on the veranda at all since it wasn’t used due to December weather but it looked like it would be wonderful to sit there during spring/summer/autumn sunny days. Super close to the center of São Martinho, only 100m or less away from nearest cafe/restaurant. Would definitely go there again! Highly recommended!

Booked the suite which had a lovely view of the valley and the town. My husband and I thought it was lovely that the rooms were named after famous writers. Lovely vintage European furnishings in keeping with its reputation as the oldest hotel in Iberia. It was off-season and the hotel was short-staffed but they still kept a very helpful and happy attitude which we really appreciated. The front desk was especially helpful and gave us a lot of travel tips and directions, such as getting a cab from the train station as Sintra has a one-way road system in some areas which meant that we were less likely to be picked up by cabs. Clean and large-sized room, akin to a studio apartment. It was also situated really close to town - appx 5 min walk into the old town with its bars and cafes. The best choice of food would be the Italian across the road from the hotel - Fatto in Sintra. Great service staff, authentic high-quality food and wine; all for a decent price! We're planning to come back to Sintra for more hiking and intend to stay here again.

The restaurant was open from 7.30 pm for dinner, which was quite late by our standards and despite being 1 of 2 guests in the restaurant, service was quite slow. We weren't expecting the food to be quite so salty... but that's Portuguese food in general! The cafe wasn't open for a quick bite before dinner as well but it seems that the establishment was rather short-staffed, hence the cafe was unmanned while the barman helped with the restaurant.

We were upgraded to a suite (free of charge) which was fantastic as we had so much space! Location is great, easy walking to everything. Also had a facial in the spa which was super relaxing. Not sure how often people book treatments but it was lovely.

Breakfast was very hit and miss, pastries were delicious, omelette was OK, but some days they forgot the hot drinks, and on our last day I ordered poached eggs - the eggs were totally rock hard (they could have passed for squash balls!) which totally defeats the purpose of poached eggs....
