Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys

The hotel is a unique building from the beginning of 1900s, with some original forniture and decorations. It is divided into two main areas, the standard one with some quite steep stairs to access to each floor, whereas the smart one offers a more comfortable access and rooms that are decidedly upgraded. The overall position is really central and allows walking tour around the cities, with a plenty of restaurants/shops to choose from. However, the real asset of the hotel is Demetra (I hope it is spelt like that), the kind lady who welcomes you at the reception: she is really nice and empathetic and always tries her best to go extra mile to accomodate any needs/request.

Standard rooms are really basic, and a bit overpriced (e.g. no door between bathroom and bed area, and a window which was very difficult, if not impossible, to open). However, I was promptly proposed un upgrade, which made my stay much more comfortable. Next time I will book, I will try to make sure about the space and equipment of the room in advance.

room facing a noisy street! No safe in the room to keep valuable while you have to give the key back to reception when going out! and no check on names/ ID when requesting the room key which means anyone can just ask for a room key, go in an steal all your valuable easily ! the hotel should put in place some checks before handing room keys…

Very comfortable room with bathtub and shower. Nicely organised with nice balcony and terrace to sit outside. Very centrally located in Groningen, close to stores and coffee shops.

The door to the room was very thin as well as the walls which meant that we could be heard outside and vice versa. Additionally the windows were really big and nice but people walking by could see inside the room especially when lights are on inside the room, so the curtains need to stay closed for privacy.

We arrived by train late evening. The way to the hotel took 10-15 minutes on foot, we saw the evening city and its streets full of life. We were warmly welcomed and accommodated at the hotel. The interior is exquisite, but I liked it without exaggeration. As for the room, it was a warm, clean one. The comfortable mattress and fast Wi-Fi. A luxurious shower - a hot and strong stream, immediately makes you relaxed! The breakfast is classic - from pastries to eggs and granola. and I liked the coffee.

The room had a jacuzzi, but I'm squeamish about such things because it didn't look new, which is not the problem itself, but not all the holes in it looked clean enough to use it safely. But the very good shower did not disappoint. Also, through the bathrooms and/or the ventilation system, we constantly heard the neighbors when they were using the room or talking next to it.

It’s a very nice hotel with very different types of rooms, that are comfortable, clean and have very nice bathrooms, a nice courtyard and a delicious breakfast. The staff is helpful and friendly and a drink at the bar might just give you a nice conversation with the bar tender. The deluxe version will give you a spacious room with a jacuzzi.

While it is interesting to have such variety in the types of rooms, some are not as nice, be it due to location (several tight staircases up) or due to the furnishings and views. In my case the main one of the three small windows I had was quite dirty and could only be opened a crack. The towel I was provided with had several holes, and my room did smell a bit. Noise from the street might also be an issue for light sleepers. That being said, I saw a few other rooms (due to traveling in a group) which were very nice so your mileage may vary. The deluxe room version is certainly the safest option to have a perfect stay.

The hotel is very well located and distributed on four old buildings. The beds are very comfortable and the room has a good size. The bathroom had a separate shower with good water pressure for a good morning start. The breakfast room has an open kitchen with nicely prepared hot food and connected to a bakery where they prepare fresh bread for the breakfast. One of the room walls is a huge window overlooking the garden (this happens in many rooms).

I'd like a bit more varied selection of food for breakfast.

I really liked the lighting of the room and the style of it. The bed was also very comfortable and firm enough. On the other hand, the view from the windows was pleasant in its own way, but the roofs and terraces of the houses could be cleaned.

The room was relatively dusty and the wear and tear was visible, it would also be recommended to renovate the bathtub and review the wear and tear of the furniture.

Friendly staff, superb location, huge jacuzzi, very comfortable bed. Could get a bit loud as it's on really busy street, my windows faced the street and rowdy bar goers were a bit too much, however hotel is great. Will definetely stay here again.

Had to bring my luggage up the stairs as there is no elevator.

The room is exactly what the description and pictures gives you. Nothing more or less. Travelling after few hours in the cold, the room was very very warm. The room has a bath tube and it was perfect after a day spent in the cold whether. The bed was comfy. The location is super good. You have in the area shops, cafes, restaurants, museum, parks, old city streets and monuments.

The Suite was top quality with a very nice spa bath. Especially if you're dividing the price with someone else, you will not find better in the city! The room was spacious, with plenty of room to put our clothes in closets.

There was no shared couch we could sit on together, which was a real shame for us. It's not a big drawback however since we had two separate chairs instead! This facility is just missing accommodations for disabled people like an elevator for example, otherwise, it would be worth 5 out of 5 stars!
