Summer House Backpackers Cairns

Everything! There are games and activities every night which is such a good way to meet people. There is a free shuttle into the centre, free rental bikes, washing facilities and literally everything you need for a short or long term stay. I love it so much I have decided to here stay long term! The staff are amazing too and will help you with everything you need, and reception is 24/7 which is great for arriving late. The people that stay in the hostel are amazing too, I had made so many friends even by my second day - it’s like a big family here. The rooms are clean, the air con is great, there is a bar and restaurant which sells the tastiest food and the kitchen/ toilets are cleaned loads of times during the day too unlike other hostels. I really can’t fault Summerhouse at all, it’s turned into a second home for me😍

Nothing! I did think not being in the city centre would be an issue but the shuttle runs all day and it only takes 5 mins to get into the centre.

The open area for everyone to have space and chill out where ever and the nightly games to play and programs to get everyone involved

Bingo was a great night just lil bit rude when they called out numbers and like 69 and give the host a high five but was always up at the front table not giving a chance for the people at end table to get a shot felt left out, Also, the shuttle bus needs Major Maintenance as one lost its breaks. It was very scary and unpleasant and un safe, esspeacily when other don't but belts on if the police saw they will be in trouble, if there was a bad accident,

Nice place to have a good time. The staffs are nice, especially Martin is incredibly helpful, friendly and kind to everyone. The location isn't smack dab in the city center, which it was ok, as I found the shuttle bus service every 30 minutes to be super convenient. It's a quick ride into town, and I loved how easy it was to get around. The variety of activities they offered every day. It kept things interesting and added an extra layer of fun to my stay. Plus, the TV room is a nice touch for chilling out after a long day.

The kitchen is small and get crowded easily.

Staff were really friendly and happy to help with everything. Also special shoutout to John at front desk who helped us book most of our day trips (great barrier etc). He is honest about the different options available and caters to your needs. Backpackers also give a discount on these tours when you book directly through them so I would advice to wait and do so if you have the time. The free shuttle into main Cairns was really helpful as shops are quite a distance. The room and communal areas were clean. The bar in the hostel has a really good happy hour. The hostel does a really good job at creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The hostel arrange daily activities (bingo, pool competition etc) which makes it easier to talk to new people. We made some really good friends whilst at Backpackers. I travelled with a friend but I imagine that even as a solo traveller you will meet some amazing people.

There was so much available. The communal areas were great, they had a pool, table tennis, Mario kart as well as a bar that also served pretty decent food. The location of the hostel is pretty far from the town center if you wanted to walk. However, they do offer a pretty consistent FREE shuttle service throughout the day, we enjoyed walking back during the sunset. They also offer free suncream at the front desk.

We had breakfast included, it wasn't bad but it wasn't the most amazing. Stayed in fair amount of hostels and have been provided with more continental breakfast. I would say this one was more on the basic side. A loaf of bread with spreads and they offered some cereal. So enough to start your day well, but not something for people to be aware if they're expecting fruit, yogurt, pastries/bread rolls etc. Overall it wasn't an issue for us

Great social hostel, lots to do like the pool, hammocks, games, bar, organised entertainment, TV room. A good place to meet people, lots of hustle and bustle and seating area to hang out. Free breakfast is always a bonus even if it is just bread and cereal.

Places needed a proper clean - bedrooms and bathrooms. Air con is only in bedrooms so hot everywhere - kitchen etc. Kitchen is a bit small for the amount of people staying. Tiny ants on bags of kitchen stuff if you don't put in the fridge. Staff gave no instructions about anything on arrival - not even which direction my room was!

Plenty of things to entertain yourself or to participate with others if you are a solo traveller. Ver social and the staff are always so lovely! Speaking of lovely staff, I have to shout of Daniel, Leati & Justine for their EXCEPTIONAL customer service. Always there to help with anything at all and if they for some reason couldn’t accommodate, then they would do everything in their power to find an alternative. Daniel no longer works in Cairns but will start work in the Sydney Backpackers soon, so please go and say hello if you are ever there, nicest guy around.

It can get a little crowded and overwhelming when the capacity is up but you can find places of comfort and peace somewhere, it’s a huge hostel so I wouldn’t worry too much.

I absolutely loved my stay at Summer House Cairns! It's not a super big hostel so you get to know a lot of people by just cooking in the kitchen, like a big friendly family vibes! I've met travelers from all over the world who became real good friends! The staff were also amazing, super helpful, lovely and funny! They also were from all over the world so knew many languages which I loved! I especially want to thank a lot the german receptionist (with beautiful eyes, but can't remember her name) who was so wonderful and made my stay exceptional. The female dorm I had booked was right next to the housekeeping room so it was a bit noisy, thus I asked her if I could be moved to another female dorm for 3 nights, however since there wasn't another female dorm available to move me to, she so kindly moved me to a private room for my whole stay for no extra price! Thank you so so much!!! The hostel was a little bit away from Cairns city centre but the hostel offers a free shuttle there and back every 30 min: so so useful!

The only thing was that in my hallway there were only 2 unisex toilets (with showers inside etc.) so sometimes I would have to wait quite a bit until they were available, or go to the toilets near the pool.

The pool area, the hammocks, staff are helpful, really enjoyed the free day out, really handy having a free shuttle bus to get into the city, loved the activities that they put on every night

Need more than one toaster as lots of people waiting at same time, same with washing line, not enough space for the amount of people staying there. The bed was very squeaky in our room.

The shuttle is great, the noise control good, breakfast not bad. The A/C was good.Staffing numbers were good. The cleaner very hard working (needs a bonus!) The pool was great with some good options.

More orientation at the beginning about ; kitchen bags; breakfast reminder, shuttle, activities, bike usage and options; a little SOP would go down well. You definitely need to recycle stuff; young people are conscious about this. A little clothes line would help, especially for lights (heavies should stick to the machines). A drink vending machine , also with flavored milk , is a MUST. And a little more furniture in the private rooms such as a bench and some clothes rack options. Need an airport shuttle for peak times- even for a cheap $5 charge. So private room price was a little expensive.
