This guest house was a complete and utter joy to stay at. I stayed in the single cathedral view room and it was gorgeous. Super comfy bed, amazing view of the cathedral and such a reasonable price for a Sunday evening stay. All the staff were super pleasant and I would definitely stay here again.

The only thing that I noticed (that I could point out) were the steps were quite steep to get to the room and I could hear the people talking in the next room. However, not a lot can be done about that, as it’s an ancient building. Also, a good pair of earplugs solved the second problem! Lols

The view from our room of the cathedral was spectacular. The restaurant was crowded, but the hotelier was able to find us a table even without a reservation. We had a great time and would recommend this small hotel to friends and family.

We arrived on a very unusually hot day, the room was on the 3rd floor and no a/c. The windows open wide and a breeze was really helpful. In the evening the room cooled down and was very comfortable. The stairs up to the room were rickety and small semi spiral (ancient, as advertised). I would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues. Once in the room, the space was amazing.

Such a characterful old (ancient!) building with magnificent views of the cathedral. Our dog friendly room (3) was spacious ,clean and comfortable . Breakfast was delicious and the staff were friendly and very helpful.

Parking was a little tricky but we knew it might be when we booked. Don’t think it helped that it was a beautiful day - apparently you can usually park in cathedral grounds, which would be fine, but there were no spaces. Lots of parking options within a few minutes walk though, and again staff were very helpful watching our bags for us whilst we retrieved the car.

I loved this ancient and building. Atmospheric and peaceful with a beautiful view of the Cathedral. The Vegetarian breakfast was delicious ( thanks Evelyn) A little sanctuary very close to the centre of Britain's smallest city.

Nothing really. Thanks to the hotel for being clear that some of the rooms are up some very steep stairs which could be problematic of people with reduced mobility, so people can request a room on the first floor. But I intend to come back and ask for a top floor room while I can still clime the stairs.

The Ancient Gatehouse is a lovely surprise, built within the ancient town walls abutting Wells Cathedral Green. My room at the top of the property was comfortable and charming with a four poster bed, a small adjoining sitting room, modern bathroom and a lovely view of the Cathedral. The staff looked after me beautifully. Breakfast was excellent, cooked to order, with lovely coffee, crisp toast, and again that Cathedral view. The Italian restaurant is also excellent and they kindly arranged an early meal for me as I had an event to attend.

I liked everything, but there are some fairly precipitous, winding stairs which elderly people or people with mobility problems might have trouble with. The staff had pre-warned me about this. Parking in Wells is also a problem, but the staff had very helpful suggestions and I found an overnight spot by the Cathedral Green.

The Ancient Gatehouse is just that - the ancient gatehouse to the Cathederal Close. It has all the charm and quirks of a building of that age - twisty wooden staircases, coridoors going off at random, creaky floorboards, but the decor is top notch, and the view from our window, overlooking the Cathederal green was fantastic! It was a cold day in February that we were there, but the room was as warm as toast. The bedding was good quality, with nice pillows. Tea & coffee making, small TV and a bath (couldn't fit a shower into that space & shape!) When we come back, we want to have that room again!(No, I'm not going to tell you which room it was, because you'll take it and we'll have to have another one😕) The staff were really friendly and polite. Fabulous place!

The hotel was in a very old historic building and its terrace and some rooms directly faced Wells Cathedral for outstanding views. Location could not be better. The breakfast was good but a bit expensive - but so was Wells in general. We ate at the restaurant one night, on the terrace and it was very good. The restaurant is very popular.

Nothing the hotel can do about it but there were two flights of stairs to our room and the second was very steep and narrow. If you have mobility issues make that clear when you book.

The location and view of the cathedral. The age and quirkiness of the building.

Maybe a breakfast menu to chose a small breakfast e.g. just egg on toast? The bedroom was a tight squeeze, couldn't access the wardrobe fully. TV had to be turned off at the socket and couldn't reach the socket for one of the lamps behind the bed head. Would have liked some information on the history of the building.

The host was really helpful and very friendly. They had also kept really good communication with us, letting us know about refurbishment work, advice on local parking, accessibility issues. Rooms were lovely, very cosy, views incredible - access a bit tricky but well worth it - and it is about 700 years old so those tight spiral staircases are historic - hosts do clearly explain the staircases at time of booking.

The room could have been a little warmer, but again, it is a very, very old building, so minor point. Parking - just to point out this property does not have on-site parking - but given its location and age that is totally understandable - the hosts gave us lots of information on local parking though in the end we opted for a Just Park location about 2 minutes walk away - don't let lack of on-site parking put you - plenty of options.

The name says it all. The hotel is located on Cathedral Green and you can sit out and be in awe of one of the world’s most beautiful cathedrals. We slept really well in our twin beds that were bigger than usual and comfortably soft. Communication with the hotel re parking and what to expect was excellent. They helped us with our bags and the staff couldn’t have been nicer. I loved the cushy carpeting underfoot and the nice hot shower.

There was nothing I didn’t like.
