Motel On York

From the moment we arrived I knew this place was going to be good. Staff made us feel welcome, room was spacious, light and airy and had everything we needed for a four night stay. Located on a steep hill it is an eight minute walk into the restaurant area. We walked and drove quite a lot around the area and decided we had made a good choice in choosing this motel.

A general comment about Dunedin, if you cannot cope with walking up and down hills don't visit Dunedin. Almost everywhere you want to go involves traipsing up and down steep hills. We are both over sixty five and managed okay but if you are not active or are physically challenged it might be a problem.

The location of the property was excellent, just a short walk from the octagon. Our unit was located on the 4th floor with an excellent view over the city and surrounding areas. The apartment was spacious, very clean, with a good sized kitchen area and lounge. There is no lift but our thanks to the lady on reception who was kind enough to allow us to park in a space usually reserved for the disabled unit so that we only had a few steps to negotiate to our unit.

The shower was located over the spa bath which was quite slippery and a little difficult to get into.

Location was great being close to the heart of Dunedin. The accommodation was clean, spacious, had all the things that we required staying for 6 days. Daily clean, tidy up, top up of beverages were all without issue. Staff ever so friendly, even gave us a location to park our car close as we were on the top floor. The price was most reasonable.

The bathroom was off the entry so we could access it without waking our adult daughter who slept on the single bed in the lounge area. Helpful recommendations about where to eat which we followed and were happy (St Clair beach and Vault 21).

We ran out of toilet paper and tissues (3 adults two nights and only one spare roll of TP when the one on the roll holder was almost used up anyway when we checked in).

Dunedin does not get too hot in the summer, but the direct sunlight in NZ summer can be intense. The room has no air conditioner, and our room faces direct afternoon sunlight. It took us a while to cool down the room after returning on a sunny summery day (when the sun set around 10pm). We had to leave the door to the balcony open for hours before bed.

The staff at Motel on York could not have been nicer AND you are literally a one or two block walk to town. In town there are all the buses you need to head out to portobello or port Chalmers or just up to the botanic garden if you don't fancy the walk. The room was super clean and comfy and had everything you need. The spa bath is a treat in the room I had!

Only the view from my room (the car park) but there's nothing you can do about that and I wanted to room with the spa bath!

The man that maybe owns the business went above and beyond with service. I made a call to the office (from my cell phone as I couldn't work out the phone in the room. It didn't have a button for accessing or instructions) Anyhow, made a call with regards to the water filter as it wasn't working. The woman that answered wasn't very helpful and I was left still not knowing what to do. However next minute there was a knock on the door and the man that had showed us to the room was there to remedy. He was also very jovial about Mum going up 3 flights of stairs. Couldn't have asked for better service from him and we will definitely use your motel again. Thank you

Staff were very friendly and helpful. I booked a Studio which is higher up with a view. But we were offered an upgrade to a two room, spa bath room which meant we only had a few steps to climb. Much appreciated as my husband had a spine issue.

There was a bit of noise from room above and road traffic but did not go on very late.

The location on a hill was a surprise as hadn’t realised it wood be! This made it a bit stressful for driving for me and resorted to using GPS on my phone. We didn’t experience the breakfast.

The bathroom was very compact, the shower a triangle shape, a step up into and out down, one needed to be careful.

Close to town, walking distance to city centre. Cosy room, very clean and tidy. Bed and bathroom were great.

We found early morning noisy from around 5.00 5.30. Rudely awoken by someone banging on the door next to ours looking for someone and then banging on our door. 5.00 in the morning. People making alot of noise walking around upstairs the following morning around 5.30. Not sure why any of this happened but we enjoyed our stay and Dunedin.
