Sunrise Suites

I loved EVERYTHING about it. From checking in to checking out. The rooms were spacious, the bathroom was great, the amenities were excellent, and the breakfast was very special. I recommend this place to anyone who is traveling to Kyoto! You get a very good quiet Japan experience!

Everything about this property was amazing! The rooms were big compared to other Japanese hotels. Each of our rooms had a washer/dryer which was unexpected. With only 15 rooms on the property it was very intimate. The location was perfect with the train station, convenience and grocery stores nearby. The most enjoyable part of our stay was the friendly staff. We will be staying at this property again on our future trips.

Thank you all who wrote such accurate positive reviews as they helped me pick Sunrise and thank you to the designers, developers, managers and staff who created and maintain this hotel. It’s an easy 12 minute walk from the station with lots of side alleys to explore along the route. Along the alleys there are several restaurants and small businesses. There is also good bus service in the area. The hotel is set back from the busy street which lessens noise. The staff are very helpful, gracious and polite, even giving us a tip for a good Italian place within walking distance. The design throughout references aspects of Japanese design without becoming a cliche. Our room was on the first floor across from reception (so with a view of the koi pond) and was quiet and very roomy. Great bed, comfy yakatas. The kitchenette was stocked with everything we needed. The bento box breakfasts were good and having 4 options great. We also opted to get cereal from the nearby Fresco for a change. The clothes washer was easy to use—using the wash and dry function means a 3 hour time and some items will be a bit creased. The room was extremely clean and filled with small details that made life easier. And there is that temple across the street. This was a fabulous place to stay.

I cannot suggest any improvements.

The location of this hotel was excellent – just one tram stop away from Kyoto Station, which made it very easy to get around the city. We enjoyed the breakfasts each morning. (Note: If you want a *hot* breakfast, we recommend ordering the tofu option, which is a simple soup in a heated bento box with rice and pickles.) The bed and pillows were comfortable, and the washer/dryer unit was very helpful for us. The staff were kind and helpful with securing a taxi for us at check-out.

One whole wall of the room was a window facing the main hallway, which you could cover with an opaque screen – but the hallway light was on all night long, which made the inside of the room very bright. Thankfully I had brought a blackout eye mask with me, otherwise I would not have been able to sleep. We also heard a lot of noise overnight from the main street outside – revving cars and motorcycles, loud sirens, etc. – and often heard other guests who were out in the hallway.

Sunrise suites really exceeded our expectations - the location was super easy to get to from Kyoto station, and is right by a lovely temple (Toji) which was lit up at night when we stayed, and visible from the small rooftop at the hotel. There is a metro station around a 15 minute walk away, an overground line about 5 mins away and also plenty of buses came past the hotel heading to central locations. The rooms are great, very spacious, comfortable and clean. We were able to make ourselves dinner using the hob on a couple of occasions, and there is a large supermarket just down the road for anything you might need. Also a washer/dryer in the room which was super handy as we had plenty of laundry! Staff were friendly as always in japan, we would happily stay another time if back in Kyoto.

As the room had some Japanese style paper screens by the windows it did mean some light was able to get into the room in the night, which did make sleeping a bit harder. However we did generally sleep fine, so no problem. Only other thing I would add was it would be wonderful if the room could have a microwave also :)

Get the breakfast added to your stay. The tofu bento has eel and soup with a pull tab that heats the box up within seconds, really cool to experience. Electric stove top, all cookingware and utensils included, washer/dryer unit in the room, spacious room and bathroom, phone in room, and table and chairs in the room were all very convenient. Temple view from the windows. Outside smoking area is designed as a zen garden. Yukatas provided for daily use. The staff were so polite and hospitable, one gentleman even offered a bit of history and a poem about Japan written by an American author. Beds were very comfortable. Very authentic experience, minus the tetami mats.

All breakfast trays except the tofu option are served cold. This is probably traditional but my fiance opted to heat his beef breakfast on the stove. Easy fix.

Good breakfast bento sets. Located just opposite Toji temple. Only 1 station away from Kyoto main station (with about 5 min walking to Toji train station). The staff/s at front desk are always there and ready to support our queries. Highly recommended for family stay with rental car. Equipped with washing machine(!) and kitchen although I did not use them.

Free parking is via first come first serve basis. Means if the 4 slots are full, the car has to be parked in a paid carpark next door. The fee is not very high at about 600-800 yen overnight, so that is not the issue. The main issue is the slight inconvenience of carrying large luggage/bags to and fro in winter time.

Loved the fact that it wasn't city central but more local - but still only a short commute. Although very Japanese it was delightful for western customers. Just what we wanted. Ate locally each night and our lack of Japanese caused more mirth than mayhem. Local Toji Temple was one of our favorites and not heaving with school children and day-trippers. All in all -a wonderful 7 days.

Our washing machine had a mind of its own and could only be controlled by pulling the plug. Not a criticism just something that needs to be fixed.

Very well appointed room. Included a kitchenette with a proper IH cooktop and rangehood. Having a washing machine in the room was really convenient after a week of travelling. All of the staff we talked to were very friendly and helpful; one staff member gave us some great recommendations for places to visit nearby. Area outside the rooms was beautiful and gave the hotel a more traditional feel even with all of the modern features. Would love to stay here again.

Best hotel of the trip- and maybe of all time. Room was huge compared to other stays in Japan and was a perfect mix of tradition modern. Bathroom included a separate shower room with a deep tub that was wonderful. Slippers were provided and there was space in the entryway to leave shoes. Beds were very comfy. Breakfast was delivered to the room - which is big enough for a kitchenette and a small table for two. The facility was also gorgeous in general. Gardens on the bottom floor with giant spaces for rain to fall through. Also.....the most stunning view of a temple across the street.
