Douro Hotel Porto Antigo

The physical location of this hotel is exceptional - river views for kilometres and huge mountains as far as the eye can see. The facilities were very neat and well-maintained. The on-site breakfast and lunch/dinner were very good. Great spot to sit on the deck and savour the views. The staff were very friendly. Located approximately 1 km from a regional railway station. On-site (free) parking was very useful. An enjoyable two-day stay.

No negatives re the hotel. Worth mentioning the following:- 1. Do NOT drive from the south east (Coimbra) direction through the mountains unless you enjoy driving on narrow, precipitous gravel roads at maximum 20 km/h. Instead, go via Porto (N102). 2. The hotel is a one and a half hour trip to Porto - either by train or car. 3. No day-trip boats that go up and down the Douro stop at Porto Antigo (where the hotel is). You either have to travel back to Porto or head further up the valley to catch a trip. 4. There are no shops or eating areas around the area. They are at least 10 mins away by car.

Location was excellent with a lovely view. I enjoyed the evening meal and breakfast was adequate. The staff were friendly and helpful

The soundproofing was terrible. I needed to move rooms due to the noise I could here from the neighbouring guests. The room I moved too resolved the noise problem but was an inferior room, but I wasn’t offered compensation for this. I also didn’t like that the gym is located near rooms so closed at 8pm and opened at 10.30am. Both these times are inconvenient for guests who are busy all day.

The hotel is in an idyllic setting by the River Douro. That itself is worth the trip. It lays at the crossroads of the Douro and Bestanca rivers, very close to Mosteiro railway station, which we used to travel to Porto, Regua and Pinhao. A car is essential to get there, but the railway gives you the freedom to move about and enjoy the scenery, without worrying about the winding roads and difficult access to most places. We preferred to eat at the hotel as it was a winding drive to Cinfaes. The restaurant's menu was mot extensive, but it was reasonably priced and the ingredients were fresh. It was a la carte, but everyday there was a selection from the chef to vary the menu. Staff were very polite and helpful and the food was very good.

We really enjoyed our stay at Porto Antigo, but if you are looking to have nights out, then this might not be the place for you.

we were on a driving holiday and wanted to visit the Douro Valley. the views and scenery exceeded expectations. Perfect for what we wanted.

the hotel was clean and well presented, bed was extremely comfortable, bathrooms were now a little dated in colour and style but everything worked fine. there was parking but only about 10 spaces reserved for the hotel, at peak times I am not sure it is enough. we arrived on a Sunday and were fortunate we had a disable badge. we would not have been able to park otherwise.

This hotel enjoys quite possibly the most scenic location of any hotel in the whole of Europe. Certainly I can't think of any hotel with a better location, with water on almost three sides, where the Douro and the Bestança merge into one river. Additionally, all the staff were very professional, friendly and helpful at all times. Although there's a saying about never going back to the same place twice, I certainly hope to have the opportunity to go back to this lovely location again in the next year or two.

Perhaps the shower and shower screen in our room could do with some updating (it was aways very clean, however)

Very smart boutique hotel right on the river. Good sized rooms with a view .

we opted for the breakfast and evening meal plan in the event this was not worth it. the prices of the a la carte menu were so similar and the choice so much better that on the second night we chose to pay extra and choose meals from this as none of us were particularly enamoured by the set meal option. Lack of waiting staff also meant quite an extended wait to order and finally eat. Our stay was spoiled to some extent by an extremely badly behaved child who spent all of his time screaming and hitting his sister both by the pool and in the restaurant , we all felt that the family should have been spoken to as they were making it exceedingly unpleasant for those who had been sat nearby.

This was an amazing place to stay! Amazing views, wonderful food and every single member of the staff was super friendly and welcoming. I would totally recommend this place if you want to eat well and enjoy sun and pool while being amazed by the riverside in this little piece of heaven in Portugal. Will surely come back!

The bathtube inside the room was a little slippery which rose minor safety concerns, specially for older people. That is the only negative thing I have to say about my stay. Can be easily countered if the hotel invests in some bathtube protections for it.

Beautiful location. bedrooms and terrace have a lovely view over the Douro. Easily accessible from the local station. Good breakfast choice and we were accommodated for a slightly early breakfast to allow us to catch a train. Very pleasant hard working staff. Good value for money.

We had a perception that the restaurant and bar were slightly understaffed. Difficulty in finding staff to obtain drinks from the bar

We loved the location, view of the river from our room. It was a peaceful and relaxing stay. The hotel restaurant served a wonderful buffet breakfast included withe room. The staff were very friendly and professional and met all our needs. The train was close by and convenient to take day trips to the neighboring towns of Regua and Pinhão.

It is not so much that a dislike, more that it is something that needs to be considered when booking: the twin room I stayed at was 146 euros/night, which is quite expensive, even considering all the nice amenities. In my case, I had to book something on very short notice and availability elsewhere in the areas was limited (and I had expense mostly paid for), but something worth considering for anyone not in the same situation as me.
