This is a beautiful hotel originally built for a shipping company - it's slightly faded grandeur so if you're looking for modern shiny smart this may not be for you but it's full of character. Staff excellent -especially Pieter the porter who gave us a personal tour of the roof - brilliant!

Not being able to open the windows - so the room was a little stuffy

I love gothic style architecture and this hotel didn’t disappoint, it reminded me of something out of American horror story especially the downstairs floor where the swimming pool is located. Loved the entrance, the high ceilings, the elegant space of the bedroom, just the general feel of it. The room I was in had everything in it that was required for a comfortable stay. I was facing outwards onto the road so there was a fair bit of traffic noise in the evening when trying to sleep. Many thanks to the housekeepers for attending to my room everyday.

I felt invisible to the staff, no hellos or goodbyes or smiles on my comings or goings from the front of house staff, this was the only thing I’d say let my experience of this hotel down along with a poor quality gym, the treadmill needs to be replaced as it didn’t feel safe and looked half broken and the rowing machine foot straps are useless, they come off mid row. No air con down there so it’s like a sauna and couldn’t find any controls to work the audio/tv equipment. I didn’t have breakfast at the hotel as for me 30 euro pp is excessive.

Large rooms with comfortable beds and large bathrooms. The breakfast had a decent selection although too expensive for the offering. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

It's a maze. Rooms are spread out in a series of different corridors. It can be quite confusing to remember where to turn and where to go to reach our room. The Hotel is really outdated: the lobby and corridors are old, very old. The bathroom had a smell of sewage. Because of how outdated the hotel is, I would not qualify it as a 5 star.

Stunning building, spacious and beautiful with lots of original features. Brilliant breakfast - lots of choice and very relaxed buffet approach. Spa area was well equipped with pool, multiple saunas and whirlpool. I loved the jet stream feature in the pool! Lovely big rooms, very well equipped. Very close to Centraal station so very easy for arrival/departure.

I pre-paid in full for our rooms, but then found out my card had also been pre-authorised for the cost of the rooms. This was unnecessary given the pre-pay. I was queried this and told before arriving the pre-authorisation had been cancelled, but found out from a member of staff when we checked out five days later that the pre-authorised amount was still in play.

The Grand Amrath is stunning for whoever likes art deco. A beautiful property, well maintained. Location is a plus. Not quite in the middle of all confusion and noise, which allows to have a comfortable noise free rest but just 5 min walk from all of it. The staff was polite and can tell you a curiosity or two about the history of the building.

The pillows and mattress were too soft. Maybe I could have requested a firmer pillow but I didn't so I can't say that The Grand Amrath does not provide it. If you do, there is nothing that I didn't like.

The hotel itself is beautiful and a stunning building filled with history and beautiful architectural details. The staff are all amazing and very welcoming. Upon walking into our room, we were so pleasantly surprised at the amount of natural lights, the space and beautiful old features like the windows and double volume ceiling. The location was perfect for what we wanted - in the heart of the city but just off centre so not in the rush of the main tourist areas. The bed was very comfortable, the shower had great pressure and the over all stay was a wonderful one! Certainly one of the best we have had in Amsterdam. We would certainly recommend to others.

The location, architecture and design of the hotel is excellent. Staff are efficient and pleasant. The size of our room and bathroom was big. The shower was hot and forceful.

It is with regret that the first room we had was next to the lift which was very noisy. We requested a move. No problem. The bed in the room was big BUT the mattress was very uncomfortable. It was old and smelly. I slept on a towel to alleviate the odour and condition of the mattress.

Location is close to many sights, and to the Central Terminal for access to travel. The hotel lounge serves good food and has nice background music. The room had such high ceilings, and windows for beautiful light. Tea and coffee were provided, as well as free wifi. Also the hotel was converted from the old shipping center headquarters with many beautiful deco touches preserved and photos of the history. The staff was very helpful and available.

There was one public elevator which was sometimes slow. the stairs were available, and staff also had access to other elevators
