The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - MGallery Collection

The Pheonix Hotel is every bit as pretty as the description says. A former posh estate, the hotel has developed into a more conventional hotel layout although there are many traces of the former beauty of the estate to be found throughout. We were only there for 2 nights so we didn't enjoy all that that hotel had to offer (spa, bar, conference rooms, etc) but we did enjoy the restaurant, pool, and very comfortable room. Breakfast is included with your stay, but we had early morning pick ups on both days and mentioned that to the Front Desk. They were more than happy to provide us with a box breakfast to take with us. We chose the continental box which was loaded with baked goods and juice, as well as your choice of coffee or tea. Our room was at the back of the hotel with a small balcony that overlooked a quiet area behind the hotel. It wasn't terribly picturesque but it did offer quiet and a glimpse of something more of Yogyakarta than the hotel pool. The hotel has many Indonesian crafts decorating the public space such as Javanese marionettes and shadow puppets. There are several comfortable sitting areas for relaxing, waiting for friends, or just places to sit and read or write. The indoor parlor was clearly part of the original estate; the outdoor fountain area is adjacent to the dining room, and on our floor there was a place overlooking the courtyard with table and chairs. Restaurant offers a dinner buffet as well as a full menu. The buffet offered so many choices of Indonesian entrees, fresh salad bar, and fruits and desserts. Very satisfying and plentiful. Overall this was a nice oasis in Yogyakarta with all the amenities you would need.

Everything was great. My only comment here is that the elevator to the upper floors is small. Big enough for 2 people with one suitcase each. If you travel with lots of luggage be sure to ask a porter for assistance. They will be very happy to help.

The elegant atmosphere and beautiful decor. Comfortable pillows and bed. Lovely balcony with a view of the volcano in the morning. The breakfast was amazing, a lot of fruits, bread, eggs, pancakes. There were also many Indonesian dishes, but I had no idea what was in them and there were not enough staff around to ask. I’m vegetarian and I would have loved to try some. I’d suggest putting a small symbol (maybe a green leaf) beside the name of the dish to indicate a vegetarian friendly item. Same goes for the menu in the restaurant. Our arranged tour was great. The staff who did our booking went out of his way to accommodate our special request.

Give more details. I asked about train times and was shown how to find the schedule, but I never considered the possibility of it being sold out. A warning about this would have been appreciated. Thankfully, we were able to get a cab to the airport and made it on time. The air conditioner was working well when we arrived, but seemed to slowly die. Please give instructions on how to use the lock box.

The hotel looked really nice and the staff was very friendly. The room was extremely clean and the bed was comfortable. The dining area had a pleasant atmosphere with the semi-open space, decorations and the fountain. Definitely good value for money.

The whole hotel has an old-timey feel to it which has a certain charm but the rooms might need an upgrade from time to time since to furniture is showing lots of wear. The TV was old and didn't have internet access. The breakfast was a giant buffet (and I mean giant) with tons of options which I don't feel are necessary and reduced the quality.

The Phoenix is an exceptional grand hotel. The facilities (including extensive buffet breakfast) are perfect and it’s fun just to explore this historic hotel. Our hotel room was beautiful and had a small balcony overlooking the courtyard with fountain. The staff are all very professional and helpful. The hotel is on walking distance (or a short Grab ride) from Malioboro Rd and Yogyakarta train station.

There was some confusion at the reception as they informed us that both Borobudur and Prambanan tempels are closed on Monday (our only day). However, the temple parks are actually open and you can still see the temples, just not enter them. Fortunately the on-site travel agency was able to give us more information. Other than that, the staff was very attentive and friendly.

First the food: It was great at the Hotel Phoenix. We moved to Jakarta two months ago, and have enjoyed the food prepared in homes and in our office cafeteria. But most restaurants labeled "Indonesian" add so much hot peppery spice that it overwhelms other flavors. The food in the Phoenix restaurant was also spicy, but only to the point where it complemented the other flavors. By far the best Indonesian food we've had since we arrived and will go back again. The hotel was very comfortable. The room was clean and convenient and comfortably air-conditioned. The staff were always helpful and wanted to make sure we were comfortable. The hotel is not new, but it is incredibly well-maintained and boarded historic Indonesian figures.

Great gym, friendly staff.

I know it's not an English speaking country, but in a hotel of this level it would be very helpful if the staff at the front desk could speak better English. It made it quite difficult to communicate what I needed, because the staff often didn't understand what I was saying. I only say this because it's a more expensive hotel than others in Yogyakarta.

The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is beautiful and the decoration is stunning. The rooms are well laid out with comfortable furniture and beds. The beds don't suffer from trying to be too fancy as some hotels do, here you get a properly made bed eith a duvet actually inside a sheet instead of some weird "fancy" duvet sandwich. The bathrooms were large and well equipped. Dinner always tasted incredible no matter if it was the menu or the buffet. In room dining is 24/7,as are the staff on hand to help at any time.

Honestly I find it hard to think of anything I didn't like, anything I can come up with feels like nitpicking, I suppose the TVs could be a little more modern, but they are in no way particularly bad.

Beautiful colonial hotel containing countless amazing artefacts and architectural beauty. Free upgrade to the top (3rd floor) with balcony was a great bonus. Breakfast was very tasty though not self serve at present. Gym is great given the size of the hotel. 800 metre walk or into town was easy. Great coffee shop next door too!

Love this hotel. Great experience - just one small negative- staff on the whole were good, polite, and accommodating, though some could fine tune their hospitality skills just a little.

The rooms and bathrooms are quite old and will need some renovation. The rooms facing the street are very noisy (luckily, we changed our room after the first night) The restaurant is quite overpriced.

The Hotel was exceptional, from cleanliness to the attentiveness of the staff, especially Bayu in the restaurant who really went above and beyond to make our stay there memorable. The front desk staff end the security people were always on hand to help when needed, sometimes even before we needed help. Only minutes away from Maliobro and other historical locations, I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone... I would stay there again in a heartbeat!!

Me being fussy - I was not very keen on the view from our balcony...so they moved us without any issue!
