Pestana Tropico Ocean & City Hotel

We arrived in the middle of the night and were the last to pass the border control (took us more than 1 hour, so you'd better fill your EASE 5 days before departure :-) but the driver of the shuttle was still waiting for us, that was very reassuring. The check-in was fast and efficient. As often in Africa, you have to pay your room on arrival. The breakfast buffet offers a good choice: lots of fresh fruit. Enjoy the pool (salty water) and have a drink from the pool bar. The location is good: you can walk to the city center (Plato) and to the beaches and restaurants at Prainha and Quebra Canela. If you don't want to walk, there are always taxis waiting for you at the hotel.

We had a room close to the reception and with a lot of guests arriving in the middle of the night walking to their room ... (not all trolleys have "silenced wheels"). Our room was a bit dark, with limited lighting.

Good selection of tasty food at breakfast and the dinner options were tasty too. Staff were attentive and friendly - no reservation needed for dinner. Reception was very helpful in booking a day tour to Tarrafal and for small queries during our stay. Pool was a lovely space, some music during the day but not too intrusive. Gym is small but enough for a holiday!

A wider selection of fruit/healthier options at breakfast would have been great but what was there was lovely.

The location is very good, close to Praia down town. Spacious room, good breakfast for stays up to 7 days (breakfast menu hardly changes), room cleaning every day, nice pool and beautiful courtyard of the hotel. We liked the attitude of the junior staff (cleaners) to the guests of the hotel.

We did not like the attitude of the senior staff of the hotel, especially in the restaurant during dinner. The neighbor in the next room smoked in the room for 5 days. We lived in adjoining rooms with him. After a request at the reception to talk to this client, it was promised that the receptionist would talk to him, but the situation did not change during these 5 days: the next room neighbor continued to smoke all 5 days. The smell was horrible especially during night time and not possible to open window.

Really friendly and helpful staff at desk and restaurant. Original room had problem with reading lamps so they moved us to better room with outdoor patio overlooking pool and sent us a complimentary food plate and a bottle of red wine as an apology. Cannot beat that!!

Loved the saltwater pool, the lush greenery and the very decent scenic background music. Relaxing at the pool always felt very good. A huge array of fresh fruit and juices for breakfast! So delicious. The beds were very comfortable. I also liked the little sitting arrangement in front of my hotel door. The room always kept quite cool, even if the AC wasn't running. Taxis are available just outside the hotel. Alugueros and busses stop at the main road, just 3 minutes away. If you want a real beach, it's a five minutes walk. The food at the restaurant is extraordinary! I absolutely loved the grilled tuna and my brother really appreciated the braised pork ribs.

Some minor issues that will probably be fixed, once more tourists come again and staff gets more training. -no fresh water bottles in the mini bar after the first day -no place at breakfast for a family of five -pool chairs could be disinfected -pool could use a deep cleaning

The hotel is in a delightful location with taxis always available outside. Very pleasant staff. Excellent cocktail mixers at the bar.

One or two little hiccups. For instance there were no hooks in bathroom for hanging dressing gowns, etc.

As soon as we arrived, I recognised the place. I had popped in for a beer on a previous trip while exploring the area on a layover to Maio while staying a mile or so away. The property is in an excellent location for the local beaches. The hotel has a large pool which was not overcrowded and seems to be focused to a business clientele. Breakfast was a typical buffet affair catering to most needs. I did like the Cachupa! Our room was very large. An ideal location to explore the town of Praia and the surrounding areas.

We felt that sometimes the bar staff could be more attentive as had to ask a few times to be served drinks. A small observation in that my wife did make comment when we checked out that the bathroom towels were threaded and tatty. All trivia stuff.

The location was super nice, 1 min away from Prainha and 2 min away from Kebra Canela beach (by car). The hotel was comfortable, very spacious room and the common areas were big and bright. The breakfast had good quality, with a lot of diversity. Staff was nice as well.

The wifi sometimes was not working very well. Also just a note to be careful when washing the carpet on the corridor outside the rooms, it left a very intense smell for 2 days. Apart from that it was a great experience.

The breakfast was exceptional with much variety, and our one dinner featured very good food. The staff was efficient, competent and very friendly at all times. The large room had space to spread out, even with two huge beds making an oversized king bed. Two people could work at the desk provided, and there was plenty of storage for clothing. The bathroom could have been a bit larger, but mostly worked well for us. The location is a 20 minute walk from the central city, Plato, or a pleasant expansion part of town above the hotel. Both are just an inexpensive short taxi ride as well. Walking along the shoreline from here is a pleasure, with a market and mall just 15 minutes away.

The large pool is surprisingly shallow, only good for a dip to cool off. Swimming is nearly impossible.

The hotel is beautiful, simple and in a good location that felt safe and was close to everything. The staff is amazing and so helpful, especially Becky who made us feel so welcome, thank you! The salt water pool is so wonderful and refreshing. The restaurant serves delicious food and breakfast every day.

The pool was always full of people, from the morning until late and there was never really a calm moment to swim and relax in the pool with my husband. But otherwise the pool is fantastic and everything super ok!
