Hôtel Saint Nicolas

It's such a pleasure when a hotel is even more impressive than you were expecting. The Hôtel Saint Nicolas is just about perfect, located a three minute walk to the quayside with its many restaurants. The underground parking is excellent and the reception staff were extremely courteous and helpful when we checked in. Our room was marvellously well equipped with everything we needed and more. The breakfasts are just superb. Absolutely nothing negative to say.

The staff was incredibly nice, the hotel feels and looks more like a 4 star than a 3 star in terms of facilities, decor, architecture. Breakfast is quite rich, from protein to french cheese and many jam/honey options. The location is superb! We were sad we couldn’t stay longer and enjoy the hotel!

Being told that I was sitting at an ‘undressed’ table when I asked for cutlery (almost like it’s your fault for choosing a free table of your choice) and they brought it right away. But when you go to France you are prepared for these type of comments :) this does not impact our view of the staff at all, they’re really nice people.

The staff was friendly, car park was great in the hotel ground and walking to the harbour was short distance. Great location and I would stay again for sure if I ever go to La Rochelle again. I am usually a 4-5 star hotel person, but this was great and could be a 4-star if it had small fridge and bath tub in the room we stayed in.

If there would have been more plant pots outside the entrance on the little square and more tables and chairs to give it a coffee shop feel it would have enticed us to stay and have a coffee with cake or sandwich. Maybe it normally is the case in the Summer, we went early October.

The excellent welcome from the night guardian. After a long week of work and travel we reached the hotel and were welcomed with a smile and sincere kindness. Whilst the gentleman was busy with multiple tasks (serving drinks, checking in customers, etc.), he proposed to make us some food late in the evening and served us drinks whilst we finally relaxed on a deck chair in front of the hotel. He made a list of all the restaurants to go to and provided us advice on various topics. Such a precious person which makes a golden first impression :)

Breakfast was abundant, and in a lovely setting. The food quality was a little less than we would have liked and the staff a bit stressed in the morning rush of things.

The location of this hotel is perfect, in a quiet spot but very close to the shops and restaurants of La Rochelle. The property looks like it has been recently refurbished and the room we had was great with modern facilities and a really comfy bed (and the bonus of pre-bookable secure parking). We loved the breakfast with a huge range of food and drinks and lovely friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Someone had charged some bar drinks to our room and we got the distinct impression that the receptionist didn't believe us when we checked out and told her that we'd never been to the bar (and didn't even use their complementary drinks voucher). She didn't charge us in the end but rather than saying "sorry, our mistake" she said "if you say you didn't have them then we have to accept that". So, for a lovely stay we left with a slightly bad feeling about the place.

Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom luxurious. It looked brand new. The breakfast was very good. Lots of choice. Scrambled eggs and crispy bacon as well as meat, cheese , yoghurt, cereal, fruit and lovely fresh croissants etc. The hotel is in a great location very near the Vieux Port . The staff were very friendly and helpful too. The hotel also has its own secure parking on site.

Nothing . It’s a lovely hotel - just a suggestion - a mirror above the desk/ dressing table would be useful.

The hotel is beautiful, a perfect balance between traditional and modern design. They are dog friendly and are completely relaxed about having them in the foyer and the lounge. Loïcia and Lizzie were most welcoming and friendly and so helpful. Lizzie gave us all the information we needed on arrival and Loïcia was so friendly and helpful and makes a wicked cocktail! Would definitely stay there again if going to La Rochelle. Have already told friends and family about this wonderful hotel ! Can't recommend it highly enough. The breakfast is not bad either !

Staff very welcoming, professional, efficient and knowledgeable. A rare thing these days!!! Hotel is beautifully decorated, everything new and clean. All facilities work well; shower for example is great! Tea & coffee making machine was very welcome too; a real treat! Breakfast great!! Mike’s better than all the other hotels we stayed at during our 2 weeks car tour of France! Very well done Hotel St Nicolas! We will be back for sure 👍

A little tray in the shower to place your toiletries would be handy 😃

Everything was perfect. Private parking. The friendly staff were super helpful and spoke great English. The hotel was hyper-clean, airy, and modern inside. The room was just great. Light, spacious and stylish with a very comfortable bed and a large stylish bathroom. Views out onto the square were a bonus. Cannot fault the place and is now our go-to hotel when visiting La Rochelle.

I cannot think of a single thing that we did not like

Great location, lovely, helpful staff. Breakfast was excellent and there was a relaxing lounge area with plenty of seating. The immediate area was very quiet, although we were only a few steps away from restaurants and bars and touristy things. Room was large enough though not massive (described as cosy).

Only possible issue was my room faced directly across the street to neighbouring properties and with open curtains, was rather overlooked. Nets or some obscuring blinds would have helped privacy.
