From phoning the property and speaking to Richard who was so very helpful to the warm welcome from Andy and all the team and everything inbetween they couldn’t have done more and we’re so very accommodating. They don’t just like dogs, they love them there and Ivy loved her stay too. so thoughtful on everything, such great attention to detail, food and drink lovely too - real undiscovered gem in Exeter !

No parking on-site but pay and display a stones throw away so no big deal but would have been useful to be more clear on hotel website and Booking.com Also Bookkng.com would be helpful to have the facility to book in and pay for a pet on your site please.

The building. The location. The staff. All excellent. The staff at breakfast were particularly helpful and understanding when I explained my food intolerances. I loved the space and the decor. We felt comfortable and looked after throughout our stay.

I was surprised that we had to climb three flights of stairs to get to our room. This was fine but a little tiring. There were half eaten packages in our room when we arrived. But the staff were so apologetic and understanding when we informed them that it quickly didn’t matter. Some of the stools and chairs at the small tables in the bar area were a bit uncomfortable.

Room small though well appointed and stylish. Good tea/coffee facilities. Bathroom clean, modern-boho style, good water pressure. Bed comfortable. Excellent location between university and centre, nice being close to river. No noise from road. Accept dogs and provide bedding/bowl/treats (!) which is handy.

Breakfast average and fairly expensive for what we had. Lots of stairs, we were fine but wouldnt suit everyone. No parking - would be great to have had better directions to parking (I used Northenhay in the end, close as crow flies but there's painful one-way system) and even some arrangement with closest facility.

The bed was the comfiest ever- I’ve never slept in a bed as comfy before. The location was excellent, super close to town, which had a wide range of restaurants and eateries, and just walking distance from the university (with a bit of struggle up the hills!)

It would have been nice to have more staff around. There was rarely anyone at the front desk and no number to call from the room in case of emergencies or requirements. We would have liked to get some more milk and toilet rolls for the room but ended up purchasing our own from the sainsburys about 5mins away.

Good location, not far from the main street. Comfy large bed, so a decent nights’ sleep despite the concerns of being so close to the main stairs. Air-con was excellent and a mini-fridge provided. Amazing value for what we paid, would consider again if we needed to stay in Exeter in future. Please note this is a pub with rooms above, not a true hotel, so services are limited.

Room 1 is very near the main stairs, which are very noisy - maybe consider somehow soundproofing the stairs? In the room a couple of maintenance issues needed addressing - maybe the previous guests didn’t notice the broken towel rail?? Shower basin wasn’t the cleanest.

Room comfortable. Nice decor. Bed comfortable. We didn’t have breakfast. Also we had Assistance Dogs and your staff said 1. We hadn’t informed them that we were travelling with Assistance Dogs (no legal reason to do so). 2. Staff member wanted to charge for Assistance Dogs staying. This is not legal to do so.

Staff not aware of rights of Assistance Dogs. Had to wait a long time for the food bill. Had to ask twice and eventually go to the bar. However, the food was very good if not a little pricey.

We had a lovely, large room on the second floor. It was very spacious with an en-suite bathroom. It looked and smelled clean and fresh. The air conditioning worked really well and we were nice and cool, despite the muggy weather. Waiting for us was some small snacks and a small glass of port, which was a nice surprise. We didn't have dinner at the lovely pub, but it looked like a really nice setting, with a large glass conservatory dining room. I would highly recommend.

The boutique style room was worth selecting over a regular room, the individual touches made the stay feel a bit more special. The complimentary port and brownies were a nice touch, as was the coffee maker and fresh milk in the mini-bar fridge. Very friendly staff, and the atrium breakfast area was bright and welcoming. Parking was more convenient than expected with large open and covered car parks very close by, the one we used was free from 6pm-8am.

The window was hard to open and needed propping up to stay open. Not really an issue but in the summer it might make the room stuffy (though we did spot the room had an air conditioner).

very friendly staff , very informative check in , we were upgraded. central location , very nice food downstairs in pub , was quiet upstairs despite bar below. clean ,comfortable bed and nice touches in room , free flapjack , fresh milk and port . coffee machine .Shower / bathroom excellent . we didn’t stay for breakfast so can’t comment , the hotel is very near city centre .No parking but we used Harlequins car park or Guildhall also close by .

Steep stairs up to second floor , those with mobility issues might find tricky .

City Gate is the perfect hotel for a stay in Exeter. Rooms are tastefully decorated with beautiful bathrooms. There's a real individuality about the hotel which I liked - nice to have something interesting rather than the same bland walls and pictures and stand lamps etc. The gentlemen that run the hotel were really helpful, attentive and friendly. They ensured my request for my Mother's bedroom was met and we all had a really comfortable stay. Breakfast was delicious and served with the same attentiveness by the staff.
