Location was amazing and right in the historic area near all the good restaurants and great views. We were pre-warned we would have to park at a garage and walk with our suitcases to the property, so we had planned ahead for that and the garage we chose was about a 5-minute walk to the property. The apartment itself was cute and they offered some nice goodies upon check-in. There was a bit of an "ant" problem (re: so many that they covered my suitcase until I moved it to a new spot). We found ant-repellant spray under the sink which led us to believe this is a known issue. Understandably there will be some insects staying in an old converted cave apartment, but some warning about where not to place your suitcase would have been appreciated... Some corners/ledges also seemed to be a bit neglected in cleaning, but overall the room was maintained well. We only stayed one night so the property worked for what we were looking for!

Some bugs, corners a bit unclean. Sitting area outside the unit could be cleaned up a bit to be made usable!

Il Geco is a tastefully decorated and modern apartment set into the hillside with a fascinating cave theme. Set in a quiet private courtyard just behind the main street, this apartment is very well located within a short walking distance to many fine restaurants serving regional cuisine. Daniela is a wonderful host who communicated well throughout and made us feel very welcome. If travelling by car, you can enter the Sassi area ( almost to the doorstep) to drop off and pick up your luggage during limited hours only. very affordable parking is found outside the town only 5 or so minutes walk away, do not a real issue. We would happily stay here again and hope to have the opportunity.

Everything! The hostess thought of everything plus more! Delicious variety of breakfast, Aperol Spritz, juices etc., deodorant, hairspray, wipes for glasses, ear plugs, nail polish remover, etc etc. Response time within minutes. Recommended restaurants, ordered our cab, rechecked train schedules. Went out of her way for a magnificent 2 night stay. Quiet location, safe, walking distance to everywhere. Loved it! Photos are exact!

There were misquotes & i am allergic however there was also insect repellent provided fortunately. So no problemo!

This is a beautiful apartment in an excellent location for sightseeing. Right in the heart of the old town, the apartment is full of the charm of the area, built into the local soft stone, with lovely views from the windows. We were in the 'green' room, which had a double bed in the spacious main area, and a sofa bed in a mezzanine upstairs - this was very comfortable, but be cautious as the spiral staircase is extremely steep, so may be unsuitable for very young children. I wasn't expecting a kitchen area, but there were great facilities for preparing food (we barely made use of them as we were only there for 2 nights) and a dining table The room is cool, despite the temperature outside being hot, we wore jumpers inside. We made full use of the blankets at bedtime. The bathroom is just as beautiful as the bedroom and all the decorations and finishing touches were just lovely. I would definitely stay here again.

You cannot drive up to the property, even just to drop off bags, so we had to carry them up a steep hill to the car. We were here in a quiet tourist season, so parking was fairly easy, but I imagine this could be challenging in Summer. Mosquitoes!

Great location. There were so many different routes that led to the property so each day felt like a different adventure. Comfy bed. Well equipped bathroom with lots of extras. Kitchenette also well equipped - fridge was stocked with different milks and juices. Hosts were very attentive (via messaging) and gave us some extra treats on our 4 day stay. All in all a lovely stay.

Not an issue with the property but just a general warning that there are biting insects around so best to take precautions. The apartment has insect screens on door and windows to make sure they are not in the property. It would have been nice to sit outside but we found plenty of other places to enjoy the outdoors.

parked up at the university and walked down, 10 mins, no bother. What a spectacular location, and a lovely place to stay, spacious. Matera is a bucket-list location and this accommodation gives a fantastic sense of place and history, what fun. Super-easy to get access. Nice to see local kids and families nearby and around also, it's not just a sterile holiday ghetto, but this accommodation is small enough that it doesn't seem to be removing housing from locals.

The interior decoration perhaps was a little fussy for some people, lots of trinkets and bits and pieces which can get in the way when on holiday.

Great location in Sassi Caveoso within easy walking distance to explore beautiful Matera. Many dining options in close proximity to the accommodation. Accommodation was comfortable and very clean.

Communication with the hosts was sometimes difficult to follow with the amount of information and often in another language. It was not a personal message but more a generic message and not always delivered in a very welcoming way and in some parts almost to the point of rudeness. None of the messages had a name to them, so I had no idea with whom I was communicating. We stayed in 5 other accommodation places on our almost 3 week trip through Puglia and Basilicata and we were met by the hosts at every single accommodation - I found this approach of remote check in in September 2022 as quite unusual given our experiences elsewhere.

We loved the apartment, the owners thought of every detail to make our stay comfortable. A small dining table was set up with snacks and books and brochures about local history and attractions. The tiny kitchen was well stocked including the mini-fridge with waters, yogurt, and juice. The bathroom was stocked with every kind of toiletry you could need. And the shower had ample water pressure. The owners were responsive, they even helped us get a taxi when none could be found. I really can't say enough about all the thoughtful touches and creative decor, we loved everything.

There was nothing we didn't like.

The apartment was centrally located. It was walking distance to all of the historic sites, churches, and restaurants. The kitchen was fully stocked. In fact Daniella brought us a warm pizza shortly after we checked in. Honestly I have never seen such great hospitality from a host.

Nothing. Everything was great.

Just a wonderful place to stay. we had the ‘happy place’ apartment and it was a stunning little apartment with a location you could only dream of. Right in the heart of Sassi you only had to open your door and the views were stunning. close to all the bars and restaurants and even had a lovely bakery a few steps away. yet so quiet in the evening you get a wonderful sleep. When we return to Matera we will look to stay here again. a dream apartment.

That we only booked two nights. wish we had more time here the Sassi and the apartment were so beautiful. Matera new town lovely too and only a ten minute walk to here too and a fifteen minute walk from the apartment to Matera Centrale station so perfect.
