We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who showed us up the street to our apartment. It was lovely and unique, but at first I was disappointed as I had booked a room with a balcony. He explained it was a superior apartment with a spa bath, etc, but showed us another apartment with a balcony. Indeed , although lovely, it wasn’t as good as ours. We settled for the apartment given, and he promised to recommend a bar with a balcony overlooking the old town. Because I had once again mentioned our Anniversary when booking, he had put a bottle of prosecco in the fridge for us! There were cereals, fruit, bread, cake, preserves etc on the table, and ham, cheese, milk and juice in the fridge which would be replenished daily. The apartment is spectacular and very unique. The town is amazing, like nothing we have ever seen before. After settling in we headed back to reception to ask about the recommended bar, and he showed us on the map. We set off once more, first of all booking a recommenced restaurant, for Saturday night. Then up and up and round and round, taking so many photographs as we went, as we have never seen such a beautiful unique old town before. It is a World Heritage site and a European Capital of Culture since 2019. We almost gave up trying to find the bar getting lost in the narrow steep streets. We ended up in a more modern part of the town, high above the old streets, and eventually found the Cavalier Bar. We had to wait 10 minutes to get a seat on the terrace, but it was so worth the wait. What spectacular views! We shared an excellent platter of mixed aperitifs, a prosseco for me, a beer for John, then red wine and another beer. 35 euros. Worth every cent! The balcony gradually emptied before we left, and we were able to move more centrally for our 2nd drinks. We think people have drinks and aperitifs with a view, before going on for a main meal. It was wonderful watching the old town light up below us. Quite magical.

The rooms are spread around the most historic area Matera. Our room was in a very good position. There was a very generous choice of things for our breakfast in the kitchen. We did not needed it but the air conditioning seemed good. Because of the room being in the historic area the WiFi came as a pleasant surprise. I'd advise taking notes where your room is when being shown to it. We had to ask to be shown again. Staff were great and helpful when we got soaked in a downpour after checking out.

You have to accept that there will be steps and paths and perhaps a complex path to your room because you really are in the historic town in a location with history. This gave it great atmosphere but would not suit people everyone. Best take a torch if your are eating out at night.

Hotel San Giorgio provided us with a beautiful room, the Frantoio, for an amazing stay in Matera. The Room's position is perfect to relax and have quiet and peace, while still enjoy the beauty of living in the middle of the Sassi. The bathroom is large and modern, with lovely shower and everything you need and more. I loved the fact that the room was provided with a full package of local products and breakfast foods and drinks for all kinds of taste and those were replenished every day, so that our snacking wasn't depending on the opening hours of any buffet. Overall we were very happy with our experience, the courtesy of the staff, the super useful pointers they gave us and the beauty of the room.

I loved it all. There wasn't a thing I would change. Keep it up, Hotel San Giorgio!

Matera is a truly mesmerizing place, and our experience there was absolutely incredible. From the moment we arrived, Alessandra went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. She assisted us in finding a taxi from the train station and warmly welcomed us with a detailed map of the city, highlighting all the must-see places, tourist routes, and providing us with valuable information. Not only was Alessandra exceptional, but the entire staff was also helpful and friendly throughout our entire stay. They were always available to answer our questions, offer suggestions, and provide any assistance we needed. Their genuine hospitality truly enhanced our experience. The room we stayed in was conveniently accessible and the staff kindly helped us with our luggage right up to the door. The room itself was comfortable, clean, and well-maintained, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. We found in our room the breakfast for the next day and it included a wide variety of options to suit everyone's tastes. From the moment we set foot in Matera, it was love at first sight. The city's unique charm, rich history, and stunning architecture captivated us. And when we return, without a doubt, we will choose the same place to stay. The experience was nothing short of exceptional, and we highly recommend this location to anyone seeking a truly unforgettable stay in Matera.

Absolutely wonderful!! the apartment we stayed in was built above an ancient grain storage (wooden doors in the floor provided access to the storage - don’t worry, no longer active!). The ceiling in the entrance was about 6 or 7 metres high and the apartment opened on a quiet and private courtyard where we had a covered patio set with tables and chairs. Inside was a well equipped kitchen, interesting features such as a medieval era cold storage cut into the rock and a stairwell to a small room looking back into the apartment. The courtyard was at the entrance to excavations that exposed an old church under our building - interesting features indeed! Gianluca our host was very hospitable and engaging, and very informative about Matera. Our breakfast basket was refilled each of the three days we stayed with fresh fruit, bread, yogurt, local cured meat and cheese. Easy access to wander the Sassi area of this ancient city.

not a single negative!!

Extraordinary and unique experiance sleeping in a cave room. The staff were beyond helpful and super friendly and kind. We would recommend upgrading to the suite to make use of the subterranean wine cellar. Inroom breakfast was delicious and plentiful. We can't say enough positives about our stay, it made our entire trip.

Recommend arranging transport from train with the hotel if you are older or have a large amount of baggage. Though our experience of walking through the town was incredible and added to our adventure.

The room was large and very comfortable, the bathroom, completely modern and lovely with a spectacular shower. The breakfast was self serve in the room, but with lots of choices and fresh fruit bread and salami and cheese brought every day. The staff was very helpful especially in answering some questions about our rental car and parking. The location was lovely.

It was not a problem for us, but the suite has very steep stairs at the entrance and going to the bathroom. This might be difficult for some guests.

Family of four stayed two nights in a familyroom right on top of the recaption. The Hotel is oocated on the newer side of the old tow. Location is very good for exploring the area. It was 39C outside so the airconditioning was great. Room itself was large and the ceiling was high. Our room had a small kitchen, very good for making coffee and cooling drinks. Breakfast was delivered to the room and was Good and haad plenty of local spacialities. Staff was great.

fabulous location. we were truly in the heart of the old town. Photo opportunities at every turn. we took 2 guided tours. one in a Tuk-tuk which gave us an overview of the area then a walking tour so we go into rock churches and cave houses. This is a pedestrian city. Each day we logged thousands of steps, many of which were stairs.

If you arrive by train or bus, take a taxi. it may look like a short distance away but there are a million suitcase unfriendly stairs. Maps and Google are sketchy at best. The big things like churches were easy enough to find, but smaller attractions like Casa Nuho, we never did locate. Although we found a terrace cafe/bar that had killer views. Never did find James Bond either. lol.

Beautiful suite in a beautiful town! It felt very special to stay in a historical place like this, a great way to experience Matera. Everything was taken care of, it was all of very good quality. We thought we booked a room with 1 bed, but when they realised we are mother and daughter they arranged an extra bed. In the Italian summer heat it was very nice to explore in the evening and early morning and watch everyone go by from our balcony.
