The bedroom, the staff, the atmosphere. The Spread Eagle is a lovely old fashioned pub.
The lack of communication regarding availability of food. An email of13 Dec told me that no food was available at the pub apart from pre ordered platters. This was due to staff shortages. Lo and behold we turn up yesterday afternoon having eaten elsewhere to find the pub serving food!!!! Why wasn't I told that food was now available. We spent over £70 on lunch at another pub when we would rather have spent the money in the Spread Eagle. So we lost out as did you due to poor communication.

Very friendly and attentive staff. Ben was exceptional from check in to lights out and the breakfast waitress was equally friendly and attentive. Our evening meals (in the bar) were substantial, delicious and freshly cooked. Breakfast was a combination of self and table service and was smooth and efficient. Excellent coffee. It is a wonderful place to wake up and enjoy the stunning garden at Stourhead and we would happily return.
We stayed on a Friday evening and the bar was very quiet which was both surprising and disappointing. The menu had limited vegetarian options - in fact just one - but that was well cooked. Our room (number 2) was spotless and the bed was comfortable but generally the room was dated and lacked reference to the wonderful landscape around. It was over-furnished and underprovided with electrical sockets - none near the mirrors. The bathroom was spotless but c 1960 in design. Fortunately the bath filled quickly. A relatively inexpensive creative update here (removing some furniture and replacing the pictures with relevant scenes) could take it towards the luxury status it deserves.

The staff were so friendly, even after a very hot day. Checking in was super quick and easy and we were pretty much just sent on our way to our room (which for us was great since we’re not the most sociable lol) The room was HUUUUGE!! The view of the little cottage was super cute and everything in the room was unbelievably clean and was stocked up perfectly. Having dinner downstairs in the bar was great and so so convenient. The food was delicious, we wanted to order the burger twice each lol. It was quite quiet for a Friday evening with such lovely weather and we weren’t made to feel rushed to leave the bar or anything. Parking just across the courtyard was also very convenient (the idea of parallel parking near the church was horrific to me haha) and super easy to get to. I didn’t make it to breakfast in the morning since I was so knackered from walking around the lake but if it was anything like the dinner, I’m sure it was delicious
I couldn’t actually turn off the heater in the bathroom so that wasn’t great lol felt a bit like a sauna. Maybe it’s not necessary to have on in the Summer? Also for one night it was possibly a little expensive but if the money goes towards good staff pay then I’m more than happy to support the rates

Beautiful old house right outside the gate to the Stourhead garden...perfect location for pleasant walks from the hotel.
No one was there at the desk; place was all locked up when we got there (after check-in time), no communication, nothing. We finally tracked someone down in a neighboring shiop who called her son to give us the combination for the lockbox with the front door key. I realize they are short on staff but they could at least have warned us...we would have been happy to let ourselves in had we known how to do it.

Lovely setting, lots of character, lunch was very nice and the staff all very friendly and helpful. We stayed as we were visiting stourhead christmas illuminations
No evening meal and the bar opening times information led us to believe it shut at 6pm but was open until 9pm. Rooms were comfortable but the bathrooms need a bit of an upgrade - no shower ( just a hand held shower in the bath.)

Everything about this hotel smacks of quality. The beds, the rooms, the breakfast were all wonderful. The location is amazing - so convenient for us as we were visiting Stourhead. The entrance to the grounds is about 20 yards away!
My only issue was that they didn't serve an evening meal (they do at weekends, but we were there on a Tuesday). However, there are several very good places to eat nearby

AMAZING LOCATION!! - Free entry into the House and Gardens of Stourhead- just from staying the night! Not to mention Christine and the rest of the staff at the Spread Eagle were incredible! (They noticed that my friend and I were playing a game at the table and gave us a quiz to do overnight XD). Really lovely people, great place - slightly dodgy wifi in the room but we didn't care <3 THANK YOU!

Meal we had when we arrived was really great. Convenient for the Stourhead Christmas lights - which were unfortunately cancelled! Husband's cooked breakfast looked good and he said it was tasty. Very friendly staff.
Would have preferred to have yoghurt and berries rather than icing sugar and honey/syrup on my pancakes at breakfast.

Everything about my stay exceeded my expectations. Every single staff member from start to finish was welcoming and friendly, and went out of their way to make my stay enjoyable. Breakfast in the morning was plentiful and tasty, lunch was worth booking a table for, and bar prices were reasonable. Nothing to criticise, I shall definitely return.
