Francis Marion Hotel

When we arrived Neil, at the front desk was very helpful in providing a map for a walking tour of Charleston. He was able to point out places to stop and see as well as places to rest and refresh with drinks and food. He was very congenial and friendly. We appreciated his help immensely since this was our first visit to the city.

Perfect location for walking to all the restaurants and shops. The restaurant was great for breakfast, lunch, and dinner experiences. The room was good size and very clean. The view from the ninth floor was amazing. I had asked for upper level and our views of the cruise ships and area was amazing.

I requested two beds and only received one with sleeper love seat. This isn't comfortable for adults and when I request two beds that is what I expect to receive. I put my request in months in advance and should have received what I paid for. Other than that the room was great.

Was a pleasure to stay in there. It's literally a historical place in the heart of the city of Charleston. Parking lot was available for overnight parking. Friendly and helpful staff. Would love to stay once again.

Great location. Friendly & efficient front desk staff. Also staff at hotel entrance. The room was large. Liked having 2 luggage racks as well as a small refrigerator. Nice touch to have fresh water available in the lobby as well as morning coffee & afternoon cookies. Loved our late evening food at Swamp Fox. Delicious!! Enjoyed the large, opulent lobby for relaxing & listening to piped music or the enjoyable pianist.

Did not like the tiny bathroom! The tub could be a real safety hazard, even with the grab bar. The sloped sides of the tub didn't help either. Took a while to get hot water in the tub, too. Tiny sink. No exhaust fan in the bathroom. The toilet is so close to the tub, and the flush pipes/handle minimized the ability to safely bend over & turn the tub water on. I'm sure the age of the building & plumbing mandate certain restrictions, but it really can be a hazard for older clients. Actually, anyone with skeletal issues. Wish the refrigerator had a small freezer compartment since we were traveling by car & had a small ice chest. We used the ice from the ice machine, but some items I did not want to sit in melted ice. This is really just a minor issue.

The hotel is beautiful and in a fantastic location. We felt we had access to all of Charleston from this central location. We used the hotel concierge, Dawn, to plan and book our outings. She was fantastic! Her recommendations were great, and all of our trips worked out well. We used the restaurant at the hotel, Swamp Fox, a lot. The staff were exceptional and the food and drinks were great! We loved that there was a Starbucks in the lobby and used it daily. Our room was always clean and the amenities were stocked, we could see we had the same young woman cleaning our room all week was the same and happy we could thank her. Additionally it was a great value for the cost relative to surrounding hotels.

We were given a "short" room, #222. It looked as a normal room had been cut in half. There was no more than 1-1/2 feet from the edge of the bed to the dresser. However, we did not make a complaint, when we arrived we were dead tired and just wanted to rest, but also because my husband pointed out the good things about the hotel, it location, and that we would shouldn't be spending a lot of time in the room, so he didn't want to make a fuss.

Spacious and clean room, very comfortable beds and helpful staff when asking for a new room (due to the noise of the ice machine and the engine of the AC).

Bathroom is very small and outdated. Taking a shower in a very small bathtub with a curtain was not comfortable at all and not in line with the overall experience of the room/hotel. Our first room was located next to the ice machine and above the outdoor engines of the AC. That sound was terrible, but a very friendly receptionist directly helped us with the transfer to a new room. Please be careful when booking via booking.com as they are less flexible in selecting room with a kingsize bed via third party booking. Parking in the garage via the hotel is expensive and the restaurant below is terrible (staff and price/quality). So recommend to have breakfast outdoor (few nice spots within minute walking distance available).

We arrived early and although our room was not ready yet, we signed in and was told we would receive a text when it was ready. The staff offered to valet our car and hold our belongings but I explained that we had an early dinner reservation and we would take care of all of that when we returned. Upon returning from our anniversary dinner the staff valeted the car brought our luggage up to our room and to our surprise we were upgraded to a decadent room. My wife and I have stayed at the Francis Marion a fair number of times now and we have always been pleased with our stay. This time you've exceeded our expectations. Thank You.

Loved the location and the restoration of the property. Loved the size of our room.

Although we loved the room and the hotel in general, we did feel like our room wasn't as clean as hoped. The bathroom and sitting space (couch/coffee table) needed a bit more attention. Not terrible, but made me want to sit on the desk chair not the upholstered couch. Bed was super comfortable and well made. Our meal at the Swamp Fox was not as good as it was the first time we visited. First time I had a superior GF Reuben. This time it was not good. Almost like the chef had no idea how to make one and the hush puppies were burnt....literally served to us black. The restaurant may be totally unrelated to the hotel, so might not be within their control.

Wonderful location/view of Calhoun Park from our large comfortable (standard!) room, Classic touches like flavored water, cookies and pianist in the large elegant lobby on occasion. Excellent onsite restaurant. generally, VERY friendly and accommodating staff.

One snotty guy at the reception desk when we arrived. My wife accompanied the luggage in with the doorman while I drove around the block to the parking garage. I understand that; since the reservations were in my name, I needed to be there for check in, but the officious, young snit needn't have been pissy, rude and condescending when he informed her. Haughtiness is my least favorite look.....particularly when your salaried staff.

The general feel of the property, very retro style, still looks like in the 30s (also the room deco - there is nothing modern there). Nice view over the city from the 11th floor. Friendly housekeeping and valet staff. The room size - except the bathroom - is quite good. Great location.

The bathroom - I do not remember having seen such a small one in North America. It is more like something you would expect in certain European capitals... it was very clean though. The sound insulation is not the best - you hear partygoers even on the 11th floor....so on the lower ones...
