Sutherland House

The breakfast room was charming and the breakfast was excellent. Great local products used and well presented. The bedding and mattress were really great quality, and the coffee and tea facilities were also high end quality.

Wouldn't say 'didn't like' BUT noticed that there were a lot of cobwebs and dust in the breakfast room. shame that it hadn't been attended to. Also in the bathroom, the soap container on the sink area was half full on arrival..maybe it should of been 'topped up' before we arrived...first impressions count. The Garden Room which we stayed in had a beautiful chair but maybe too large for the size of the room as the fireplace was completely hidden by the chest of drawers.

A beautiful old building with splendid rooms, well furnished to a high quality. The location is excellent. For those who appreciate history this hotel is a wonderful example of 'old England'.

There is no reception; although the instruction to find the key was very clear. The noise from the restaurant below and the main road were at times distracting. The lack of breakfast, especially when the price of staying is high. There was no parking provided so it was necessary to find off street parking locally and walk through the town.

We visited for two nights and loved every second. The room was easy to access through an archway in the garden with a code to get our key and little note telling us which room we were staying in; The Earl of Sandwich. This was a really nice private way to check in which meant our arrival time was flexible. Once in, we were amazed how clean and spacious the room was. The bed and slipper bath were huge and as comfortable as they looked. The building dated back to the 1450s so it had wonky floors and walls as you’d expect. It made it feel like a real honour to be able to stay there. We booked for a meal in the restaurant for our first night and had breakfast both mornings. The food was amazing, the service was exceptional and the atmosphere was perfect. It’s clear that they deserve their AA 5 stars. Definitely try the homemade black pudding with breakfast if you get the chance. The restaurant was about a 5 minute walk from the beach, with a selection of lovely shops on the way. Plenty of things to do in the area with the freedom to come and go as you please. There is ample free parking about two minutes walk away on York Road so don’t worry that there is no parking directly at the hotel. I would highly recommend staying and eating at Sutherland House to all of my friends and family. I will definitely be back! It was lovely to talk to one of the owners, Andy who gave our whole stay the personal touch. Thank you for making my partner’s 30th birthday so special.

We booked a late deal here and had a small double room. The room was very small indeed. It did however manage to fit quite a few facilities into a small space including a nice size bathroom. The large windows gave the room plenty of natural light. The highlight was the amazing meal we had in the evening, served in the alfresco dining area which was beautifully lit up for the evening. Highly recommend this restaurant for its quality food and great service . We’d noticed that the breakfast was considered quite low for Southwold. We’re not sure why this is. Our breakfast was lovely, served prompt and clearly only high quality ingredients were used .

Sutherland is a restaurant with rooms only so if you want a bar/ lounge area this may not be the place for you. There is no car park so bare this in mind (there are lots of free car parks near by though).

Quirky, historical, not-a-hotel-but-a-restaurant-with-rooms, lovely.  It's hard to pigeon hole Sutherland House. Host Andy is one of the nicest guys around; chef Kinga's home made black pudding at breakfast is awesome; and special mention also to Tracey and Sam, who tidy up when you're out and about. Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sutherland House, thank you; we'll be back! Oh, and the beds are super comfy!

The room was beautiful, with nice decor, clean, and a lovely bathroom. Nice shower! The tea and coffee were a good selection plus the water, which is rarely placed in rooms now, was nice to see. Would go back and stay again.

Only thing I would change is the pillows, not very firm, too soft, and had to use sofa cushions to prop up a bit as felt like my head was on the mattress which was not over comfy. Otherwise all was ok

Liked the way to collect the keys. Clear instructions. Nice to have a teapot in the room....often there isn't one. Bottled water was a bonus too. Great to see a Gideons Bible in the room. Breakfast - lots of choice. Excellent location. Clean and comfortable.

Difficult to find parking in Southwold. Not enough shelves in bathroom. Nowhere to put a bar of soap for the bath. Noisy seagulls early in the morning.

Beautiful surroundings right in the heart of Southwold. We had the Garden Room, where every detail had been thought of, huge really comfy bed, high end shower room, our own private patio area with outside seating, the high quality refreshments were pure luxury.

I was disappointed initially by the early evening meal times, until I realised how hard the owners are working, with minimal staff. They are working 14 hour days, 6.5 days per week, whilst trying to look after a family. The quality of food & service that we received was exceptional and more than made up for the earlier than expected meal time. In actual fact we slept so much better having eaten earlier than normal & it gave us time to walk down to the sea, after dinner. It was a lovely way to spend the evening.

The room was clean and cosy, and tastefully decorated, the towels were soft. Breakfast was amazing and the location was perfect we will definitely be booking again. We'll done Sutherland House team

Luckily there were plenty of Adnams owned pubs within walking distance as the bar of an evening was only open to diners ...not a big issue just unexpected. even so we would highly recommend this hotel

lovely hotel situated in the heart of the town. lovely lavish room - we stayed in the Duke of York room. lovely comfortable bed with gorgeous bed linen. no mini bar as stated but not a problem. as there’s no parking at the hotel we had to leave our car in the public car park where unfortunately someone hit our car but left no details 😞. nevertheless we had a wonderful chilled few days. southwold is a lovely sleepy town so perfect for some R&R. the beach is stunning. breakfast at the hotel was perfect - I recommend the eggs Benedict!
