Grouse & Claret, Matlock by Marston's Inns

I absolutely LOVED the decor throughout the whole of the property! I literally annoyed my husband all day 🤣 telling him how much I loved it! Fab breakfast to start our day off. well worth having The Full Works I think it was called! It was yum! you could have the continental AND a cooked breakfast for about £9. It truly set us up for our day! We stayed in Room 2, loved the decor… again 😂 v comfortable bed, loved it. I was dubious about staying above a busy pub. BUT you can not hear the downstairs at all!

I can’t answer what I didn’t like about the property so I’ll say… I didn’t like that I couldn’t take the hunting scene chairs from the dining room and the curtains and blinds home with me 😂

We stayed here because of the close proximity to Chatsworth and it had the small country pub and inn style lodging we were looking for. I had been wanting to visit the area for years and when we arrived for check in the property and surrounding area was so beautiful I got teary eyed. It really felt like a dream come true. The Inn is nestled next to a quiet stream and is perfectly situated to enjoy beautiful and expansive views from all sides. We enjoyed visiting with guests in the RV park and sat outside and enjoyed a hot cup of tea outside on the patio even though it was still a bit cool in the morning. We had dinner and breakfast at the restaurant both days and we enjoyed the food, staff and ambiance of the spaces.

We wished that we had spent the remainder of our trip here instead of moving on. We can't wait to visit again!

Good location, spacious room, comfortable bed. Must have good sound proofing as there was no noise from other rooms (other than the slamming doors) or from the bar below

Very minor points but: - The door closers on the door to the rooms must be too effective, unless you hold the door carefully as you close it, it will slam hard shut. Unfortunately some guests failed to realise this even after the 3rd or 4th time of leaving their room each morning - TV only has freeview and no streaming channels

Great place to stay, I can’t praise it enough. From arriving to departing the staff where all exceptionally friendly and helpful, nothing was too much. The room was spacious, clean and had all you need for a short break away. The restaurant whether it’s for evening meal or breakfast was top class, great friendly service and good food and completed in a cosy friendly atmosphere. The Grouse and Claret is located centrally to lots of places to visit, so it ticks all the boxes, will definitely be going back, thank you for a great stay.

There was nothing I would say was poor.

The room was very comfortable , we were lucky to have a fan in the room as the weather was very mucky in the evening. We picked the hotel for it's location to other places we wished to visit in the Derbyshire Dales, which were only short drives away.

At breakfast we were surprised to find that no butter was available., which my wife would have liked. We arrived to find that there was no television, due to a lightning strike, This was fixed while we were there.

Breakfast was separately priced which is good for budgeting. After all. Not everyone has a full English for breakfast every morning. Staff were friendly and did their best to forfill requests. Good location. Good hygiene and cleanliness. Food excellent.

The noise made by plumbing needs addressing. Every time a tap or toilet was used next door, the pipes vibrated in our room to suggest an air lock in the pipes. This made a loud sound at around 11pm-11.30pm, every night. Disturbing those who may be asleep. We addressed this by flushing our toilet and running a sink tap to stop the noise.

Really friendly staff. Room was better than most we have stayed in. Food was good but very slow in being served.

I pre booked a table and was entitled to a 30 percent discount on main meals. I paid the bill but didn't realise I had paid the full price (I had a few pints with the meal) in the morning there was no one available to sort this out for me. I should have been given the discount automatically as our room and the discount were linked. So, check if you are entitled to any type of discount as it doesn't seem to be automatic.

Very welcoming reception. Our room was comfortable with a large, comfortable bed. Storage for clothing did not have drawers or wardrobe space but a rack with coat hangers on it and two shelves underneath. It was just enough for two people for a two night stay. We ate both nights in the bar restaurant and enjoyed the food immensely. Altogether a happy relaxing experience. The pub is also very close to Chatsworth House which is why we stayed there. If in the area we will stay at the Grouse and Claret again.

Nothing really. The much criticised resonant plumbing was not a problem since no one flushed their loo before we were well awake.

The warm and cozy feeling of the bar,restaurant and the rooms, friendly and helpful staff, room cleaned every day, great location and right next to the "Peak village shops" lovely room and very comfortable bed, they do a really nice continental breakfast, then for a.little extra money you can add on a hot breakfast as well

The pub itself and the staff are lovely. The room was very comfortable and clean. Would recommend 👌

We had an evening meal for two people. The pub wasn't busy at all. We ordered at 7.20. Pm. The starter came out about 7.50pm. The main meals arrived about 8.40 pm. Gammon and a tripple cheese burger. Nothing complicated. The Gammon was fine but the burgers were cremated. It was rectified but i didn't eat till gone 9pm when my partner had finished.Very disappointed. Would not recommend the food
