Rock Hotel

Incredible view from room balcony across Gibraltar Bay to Algeciras and across Gibraltar Strait to North Africa. Room comfortable and spacious if a little dated. Pool excellent and pool bar ideal. Staff mostly very friendly and efficient. Furnishings maybe a little tired but hotel generally very welcoming.

Checked in by young man in glasses who was a bit off-hand - pushed key card towards me and turned away before giving me the absolute basics: room number and location of lift. A pity because all other staff excelled. Hotel on a steep hill so, for anyone not too mobile, taxis essential to go anywhere. However they did seem to be prompt, if a little expensive. Bus stop up hill from town opposite, but no equivalent going back downhill.

The location is a little far from the main town but it is walkable or you can catch the bus near the hotel or get a taxi for around £10. The outside terrace of the hotel is lovely to eat at and the view in the evenings with the sunset is beautiful. The pool closes a bit early @20h and does not open until 10am which is a pity! The pool area is a bit untidy as chairs are not constantly reset & area could have leaves etc brushed up! Also the filter needs to run more in the pool to keep away any dead insects bees leaves etc from swimmers. Hotel is a great hotel & should be fantastic with some minor changes

Service in the pool needs to change! Access to pool needs to be extended

Great size rooms with comfortable beds, sizeable bathrooms, good towels, WiFi worked well, food in bar and restaurant is excellent. Good sea views and good balconies. Nicely located for botanical gardens, cable car, Main Street a short stroll away, albeit down a steep hill, bus to airport and Europa point close by. Nice pool area.

This may seem picky: the staff were friendly and helpful whenever I engaged with them. But reception is chaotic: there always seems to be an issue. And I did wonder about the upkeep. Small example: a manky box of tissues that looked liked it had been soaked was left on the window sill of the staircase between first and ground floor. It was still there when I left four days later. A small point but us pesky guests notice these things. For all that, I had an excellent stay and would readily return.

Room on floor 1 was comfortable. Balcony was fantastic. Perfect place to watch the sunset. Front desk and restaurant service was great.

Bathroom was pretty tight expecially the toilet position made for virtually no leg room in front when seated. Very hard to get on and off of.

The location, the beautiful decoration, breakfast superb.

The pool staff are below average compared to the rest of the hotel. Unattentive, and not interested in the customer service/values of the hotel.

the location and the view are both great, as was the service during dinner.

the unfriendly receptionist, I asked something twice because it was not clear and was informed that she already told me that. I don’t think she realizes how important the first impression is, which is the reception desk. disappointing

We had the best and largest room so obviously we appreciated the size. I appreciated the historic value of the hotel while my partner didn’t.

Crumbling hotel, in need of a major facelift. Cushion on the dining terrace were extremely old, missing, homes in them. If was laughable and sad at the same time. Some semi recent painting looked to be done by amateurs…crooked. Decor was mismatched, dated, and looked cheap. Pool across a busy road, safety concern. Pool needed some wok as well. It’s like this was an abandoned hotel because nothing seemed to be working or updated since Churchill visited.

It has a very elegant feel to it and was a great stay overall.

The terrace window didn't close and even the technician couldn't do anything about it. They just told us, well, it's more closed now than before - but it wasn't repaired. I believe they die not even repair it after our stay because noone noted anything down, such a pity. Also, whoever constructed that bathroom..when you are sitting on the toilet, you cannot properly place your legs in front of you because the wall is right there. You need to sit diagonally- at least that was the case in our room, very odd. With a few tricks here and there, it could all be so much more magnificent, it's a shame.

Had the pleasure of staying at Rock Hotel over Christmas 2023. We had a fantastic time Sherry and mince pies on arrival. what is not to like? Staff were always polite, welcoming and helpful throughout. Food was awesome Superb choice of breakfast every morning. English fry up, Continental, Fruit etc. lots of options for all tastes. Bar food during the evening very good value. Christmas dinner & Boxing Day dinner was yummy. Watching sunset in the evening. There is a walk downhill to main street, Other option is to use all the stairs and go via the botanical gardens. Be prepared the journey back up the hill is much steeper. Steady and slow is the way For those that do not like walking there is a bus stop opposite that will take you to the town centre, and bring you back.

The staff were all delightful. The view from the terrace and our room was super. We had bar snacks and drinks and they were all excellent. We did visit the other hotels on the island and felt we preferred The Rock and it would be our choice again in the future.

The pillows were very hard and uncomfortable and the bedlinen was not comfortable- a duvet with a sheet below and above was a constant irritation, it was always getting messed up- either go for a duvet with cover, or sheets and blankets. There was a great selection at breakfast and the fresh cooked poached eggs were good, however we, and other guests, were not happy that birds were allowed to fly in from the outside and land on the food tables where they pecked at the food. We shooed them away but there didn't seem to be any action taken about this. We are fit so it was ok for us, but a note for those who may have mobility issues, it is a steep walk up to the hotel from the town.
