Safestay York

The bed was self-contained and felt very private which was particularly pleasant in a hostel environment. The location was a great distance from the centre of town. The room was large and tidy.

The wifi was blatantly awful, I wouldn't even advertise the hostel as having wifi in the room I was in. The storage lockers were conveniently placed underneath the beds but were big and bulky. To access them you had to pull a metal crate double the size of a suitcase out from under the bed. This was noisy and hard to access and I felt bad trying to get anything out or put anything in at night in case I disturbed my roommates. Having a free padlock provided would also have been a nice touch. The bathroom also ran not very hot water and the floor remained soggy for several hours after the shower was used.

Fabulous location, very close to station and town. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Accommodation was basic (as you would expect!) but clean, and comfortable. The beds were surprisingly comfortable and the sheets and bedding were immaculate, and very good quality. We could buy coffees and take up to room, which were great coffees and only £2.50.

People on top bunks could have done with somewhere to sit - we were fine as we shared the 10 room with friends, but I imagine it would be difficult if sharing with strangers. We paid £3 per bag for bag drop before check in.

Beautiful old building with cute quirky decor. I booked the private double room and couldn't be happier for the price. Lovely comfy bed and crisp white sheets, spotless bathroom and a beautiful bed and beamed ceiling. Loved the touch of each room having a little board outside explaining the history of the occupants. This was a very last minute booking and I couldn't have been happier.

The room was very warm with the heating on full and the window wouldn't stay open. It soon cooled down when I turned off the radiator and managed to wedge the window open a fraction.

For £13 it's pretty decent. Very clean and modern hostel. Courtyard was small but cosy and the bar was quite lovely, not expensive for drinks. Staff were nice and friendly, check in was easy. At £13 I didn't have high hopes for the room. Room 4 was actually really nice, its a good size and didn't feel cramped in. It was very clean and tidy, bed was super comfy. Absolutely love the privacy curtains, not often seen in hostels! The room was a good temperature. Plenty of space in the lockable cages for stuff.

The only downsides for me was there was no access to kettle, toaster and microwave as they were all broken. I was allowed free hot water though. There's no soap in the bathroom and you can't buy any at Safestay , this is to keep costs down. (Luckily I found some shower gel in bottom of my bag for everyone to wash hands with!) There is shops nearby for things too. Our room (4) shower ran a little cold, but there are showers in basement with hot water!

located in the roof 3 floors up with no lift no blind on skylight but the beds were very comfortable with crisp clean linen and the rooms were very clean. will stay here again. good value for those on a low budget.

Breakfast could be included as most of it lay unused and was probably thrown out.

Directions from trainstation: When you come out of the station turn right, cross the road at the lights and follow the road around on the wall side, to the cross roads, and turn left here, under the micklegate bar tower and you will see the hostel on the left handside about 5 minutes from here, which is opposite an old church. You are about a 5 to 10 minute walk from the city centre, so the location is great for that. The staff are helpful and the building has a very old feel to it. So if you are looking for an affordable accommodation with a medieval feel this is perfect.

The only minor thing was no bottles of water.

24 hr front desk, friendly staff, beautiful old building, cooler temps inside than out, i slept well, privacy curtains, luggage lockers under beds, lamp at each bed, guest fridge + kettle + microwave in the dining room

noisy heavy doors that slam, can feel every movement your bunkmate makes, no toilet paper upon arrival at 22:00, roommates did not always flush and left tp on the seat and floor, tiny ensuite, water damage noticeable on the ceiling, very small garbage cans in the room, bed labels were confusing to read in the dark (numbers and letters), not enough electrical outlets in the building, luggage storage not offered free to guests after check-out

they gave us first a room (no.22) which was in basement beside the laundryroom. it was smelling strongly bleach and fresh wall paint. also had no window. it was not healty place for kids to sleep, So then when we complain about it they tried to change and found another room in upstair. Thank you for that. Upstair room (no.15) was big enough for the family, bright, clean and comfortable. Friendly staff. Also the location of the hotel is good. If you come by train it is very close to the train station and the touristic places of the historical city.

They charge for luggage keeping 2£ for each, and early check in 5£.

Great location and price. I stayed in a female dorm with an ensuite bathroom. Sheets were clean and bed was comfy. Beds have got curtains so you get some privacy. Lockers under the bunks are a nice size. Nice coffee downstairs in the reception area. There was an ensuite but the toilets and bathrooms in the basement are nicer. I felt safe as a solo traveller. There are 2 nice coffee shops if you turn left.

The towels are £6 to hire which is expensive. The ensuite bathroom was grim but usable.Staff were ok but did not tell me anything at all about the hostel.

I thought the property overall was very good. The historic house in which it is located gave it a great vibe and fit well with the location. The room (6 bed mixed dorm) was good sized and convenient. I appreciated the staff response to a special request. Also big kudos to staff for attitude and responsiveness throughout the stay.

While I like the en suite bathroom (VERY convenient), the shower sprays over onto the floor outside the shower making it wet for anyone who may come in afterward. Without a floor pad of any sort, one must stand on wet floor even if not using shower; also tracks water into the room. Longer curtain might help keep spray in the shower area (just a thought).
