American Trade Hotel

We stayed here three different times during the course of three months. AT is in a great location facing a park square, tastefully restored and decorated with a comfortable room. Rooftop pool is a welcome respite from the heat in the middle of the day. on the first visit s violinist played in the park as we watched from our balcony and it was splendid. We did enjoy our stays here.

Most features of this hotel are available in the many other beautifully restored hotels of Casco Viejo for considerably less. Room rates at AT rose about 50% between Jan - March 2022 and booking makes it impossible to know if your room will have the most desirable features (square facing balcony, larger size) that make the high cost worth it. The size and features of our room declined as prices rose (we stayed here on three separate occasions) and they weren’t always available to accommodate a switch.

Absolutely beautiful hotel with a good restaurant and rooftop pool. Aesop bath products were a great touch. Front desk staff were so kind and helpful.

Restaurant seemed to be understaffed. The food was good but service was slow and orders mixed up. Wish they had a bar on the roof with the pool. Really noisy church bells right outside our window (ask for a room facing the front of the hotel to avoid).

Location was perfect for exploring Casco Viejo with lots of restaurants and bars within a 2-3 block radius. The hotel has wonderfully restored/retained the feel of its historic past a la Raffles Hotel, albeit on a much smaller scale. The rooms were beautiful and spacious with high ceilings, some with balconies overlooking the square like ours. We stayed midweek and nightlife was pretty lively in the square. Not sure what it’s like on the weekends but we liked leaving our floor to ceiling balcony doors open to hear the music and sounds of the square. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and made our stay a delight. The restaurant in the hotel has a limited menu, but it was some of the best food we had in Panama and very reasonable. So good that we broke our rule of never eating in a place twice whilst traveling. The hotel also had Wednesday salsa night with an excellent local band and dancers in an intimate cafe theatre setting. This hotel was one of the best we’ve stayed at in our travels with its mix of history, location and service. We’d definitely like to return to this hotel and Panama City with all its historic and gastronomic delights. Note - Fonda Lo Que Hay is a foodie spot only a half block from the hotel. Lives up to its hype and well worth planning ahead to get a reservation.

The hotel is accessible for wheelchairs via the rear entrance which is the restaurant entrance and the requires help from a member of staff to use the short stair lift to lobby and elevator level. However, I very much appreciate this is a historic landmark and the thought and effort to make it accessible.

We loved our 2-night stay at ATH. It’s a lovely hotel in a perfect location in Casco Viejo. We had a room with a balcony out to the Square, it was picture perfect. The hotel has a lovely, unique style, Aesop toiletries, a well-stocked and reasonably priced mini-bar in the room, very comfortable bed, a small but lovely dipping pool, a fascinating little library and inner courtyard. Location was very easy to walk to anywhere and felt safe. Our rate included breakfast, there were several choices to pick from. Ample portions (although the coffee was unpalatable). Jazz Bar was neat but seems the shows are only once a week or so. Yes, you will hear some noise at night from nearby restaurants but the glass doors to balconies are double-paned and it really was okay - actually better noise control than anywhere else we stayed in Panama.

Not much we didn’t like! Minor things would be the unpalatable coffee served at breakfast, but no worries just pop over to the front desk and make yourself a Nespresso. The front desk staff were very kind but the waiters in the dining area were not so much.

this place was absolutely beautiful! when we walked in the lobby I was impressed by how lovely it all was— like something from a movie. there was a doorman and bellhop, which gave a luxury feel and everyone was especially helpful and accommodating. it was a little taste for luxury! the room was nice, and the shower was amazing— so much water pressure and nice hot water! (although, the shower door didn’t contain it all and even though we closed it, the floor got all wet). the restaurant was delicious, one of my husband’s favorite meals of the whole trip, and they were understanding and accommodating when my poor Spanish skills resulted in me ordering the wrong thing by mistake. the check in and check out processes were smooth. the location is right in the middle of Casco Viejo, with lots to do all around! We loved it all.

Stunning restoration of the formerly tallest building in Panama. Reminders of rougher times are thoughtfully etched into the West stairwell. Service was brilliant and welcoming. Period concepts are spot on and really do transport you back to the turn of the 20th Century. Our room was spacious, including a nifty balcony. Commanding La Plaza Herrera, the ATH is close to savory dining (CasaCasco among others) and Avenida Central takes you to Las Bovedas with beautiful views of the Pacific corridor and Causeway. A great spot for a romantic "paseo" in Casco. The American Trade Hotel is the place to stay in Panama. I had been dreaming of a lodgment there since 2009 and it did not disappoint. Whether you love history, great food, or just a bit of whimsy, you will find the best part of yourself at the American Trade.

This is a beautiful hotel with a classic design from a bygone era that integrates well with modern touches. The location is on a beautiful park with a view of the ocean from the rooms facing south. The rooftop pool was especially enchanting and a quiet respite from the neighborhood.

The thermostat needs upgrading. I could not figure out how to use it and though I wished to use the overhead fan instead of a-c, I could not get the fan to work. I requested assistance from the front desk but maintenance never appeared. As a contrast, I am currently staying at the JW Marriott downtown and the modern thermostat was easy to use.

The hotel location is very good, it is walking distance for everything and the fact that it is by one of Casco's plazas make the ambience more cozy. The room size was perfect and the view to the city and the area was beautiful. The hotel is super pet friendly, we visit with our two little dogs.

The church next door (which is a definitely a place to visit during your stay or visit to Casco) rang the bells in a schedule every morning so it is a little uncomfortable if you want to sleep a little late.

The location was excellent, and the desk clerk had excellent English. It was comfortable, although it had few amenities in the room

I stayed only about eight hours, just long enough to sleep yet I had to pay full price, no discounts for the breakfast I did not eat. I left at 5:30 pm and the hotel put the price of the taxi on my bill. I forgot about this fact when I was dropped at the airport and paid for the hotel a second time in cash. When I realized my mistake I requested a refund of the taxi fare, but I still haven't received it. I paid more than $300 for a place to sleep for seven hours. For all I know the room was cleaned and rented to another customer later that night.

I am so thankful for the excellent, attentive staff here who were able to get us two rooms and early check-in on short notice. The room and area are exquisitely beautiful and incomparably central to the historic district. Although I wish my Spanish was good enough that this didn't matter, the staff was excellently bilingual and although I do not recall her name the young woman at the front desk who initially helped us had exceptional recall for the details of our trip and was so helpful. The entire staff was wonderful, the pool and views were great, and the food was excellent which I can't always say of hotel food, and not a bad value either. Really loved this place so much.

The property was a last minute solution to a previous, terrible hotel - it was a bit more than I hoped to spend, but the entire place was exquisite and I can't complain too much.
