Thon Hotel Kristiansund

Our 1-night stay at the Thon Hotel on Kristiansund's Innlandet island was a perfect stop for our drive between the Islands of Hitra/Froya to the north and Alesund to the south. We spent late afternoon strolling through the narrow, hilly streets of this historic little community, finding stairways and paths leading to the top of a small park with lovely views and evidence of its history of Nazi occupation. We then walked across the dramatic bridge to enjoy dinner in a Thai restaurant in the city, returning just before dark to our comfortable room. The breakfast rated #1 of any included with lodging in Norway!

The breakfast was very good. There was an iron and drop-down, mini-ironing board in our room. (This seems to be a rare thing in accommodations in Norway.) The room was a comfortable temperature, not overly hot like a lot of places we've stayed in here in Norway in the summer. The pillows were good (not too thick). There were two pillows per person. There were two parking lots for guests, one right beside the hotel, and the other just a very short walk away, with a paved path to pull wheeled luggage. The location was good (quiet and in "old town"). The on-site restaurant has good food (though only has a small menu). There is also a highly-rated restaurant a little further down the street, but it is closed on Mondays, the day we were there.

The shower was constantly changing temperature even though the pressure was good. It was an irritant but not a danger. Shower water also got out of the shower area despite the glass doors and depression in the floor. The bed was a bit too firm for me, but most people would probably think it fine. (I like a softer-than-average bed.)

The hotel is situated in a refurbished fish factory, at the other side of the fjord than the city center. Moving around requires transport by car. The architecture of the industrial building also weighs on the transformation: on the height of the ceilings and the downward view into the water. The common space used for breakfast and dinner is new and opens up nicely to the harbour landscape. Breakfast and dinner were rather carefully organized and tastefully served.

The rooms are really small. As we had a superior room, I wonder what the regular room looks like. Distance to centre and crossing of the highly present bridge at the entrance of the fjord around which Kristiansund is erected, creates a sense of insular isolation

The hotel feels brand new. Check in was easy, fast and efficient. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Access to free coffee and tea at any time. Parking is free and easy. Breakfast was probably the best that we have experienced so far in any of the Scandinavian hotels. Room size is good and the desk and power points work well for using a laptop computer. There are also USB charging point at the desk. WiFi is easy to set up and is fast and reliable. Nice views from the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. The bathroom works well and is a reasonable size. The beds are comfortable and heating is comfortable.

The dinner and drinks menu is a bit limited and well overpriced but what we ordered was very nice. The hotel is well away from the town centre but in a very quiet area. There is no real view from our room window but not a problem for us as we underestimated the size of Kristiansund and only stayed one night on out way to Tromdheim. We should have stayed longer if we knew how nice the hotel and town are.

Situated right on the waterfront you can drink a glass of wine or tap beer right on the canals of Kristiansund and listen to the hushed sqeaks from the nearby marina. Breakfast was on the same waterfront with the same beautiful view and offered a great variety. The coffee machines had many coffee preparation options. There is an EV charging option right in front at the hotel parking lot. I hope to visit Kristiansund again and the same Thon Hotel.

Keep in mind not all rooms have a sea view.

Comfortable room in a good location. Short walk to the free local ferry for a scenic way to go over to main part of town. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful but hot dishes could have been hotter. Bed was comfy but pillows weren’t.

Our room was over the restaurant outdoor area which was noisy and the room was hot overnight even though we had both windows open. Pillows were also very flat, no support for someone with neck issues.

Lovely hotel with a good view. Very good breakfast. Enough free parking space. Friendly staff. Clean rooms.

There was construction work happening inside the building and it sounded like it came directly from above and was very loud. On our first morning it started at 07:05 and woke us up very unpleasantly. We also stayed in the room a lot due to bad weather and having travelled far on our roadtrip, trying to relax. The construction work during the day was also annoying because of that. At least it stopped approx. at 15:30. But in all honesty... I can't understand how they're renting out a room with that noise level for what seems to be the same price, also there was no information on construction work during booking.

Great hotel on the waterfront, a comfortable and clean room, amazing staff too (Thank you Ida). The dinner was very nice in the restaurant on the water there and breakfast is as good as you will get any decent hotel.

Not much we did not like, but the pillows are a bit soft, a slightly harder option pillow would be good?

Great place to stay in Kristiansund, the views from the rooms are amazing, the breakfast was great, the staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were big and the windows were facing the harbor, they had black-out curtains for the summer nights.

There's a problem with parking spaces, but they do have another parking just 2 minutes away from the hotel, not a big inconvenience.

The room showed a nice view of the sea. From the window, the water was so near that we could touch it. At the morning we woke up with the sweet sound of the waves. We recommend this hotel to everyone who loves the sea. When you are inside your room you feel like part of the nature that surrounds you. Breakfast was plentiful and truly delicious. We had some of the best salmon in all of Norway. Not to mention the cod, which you can appreciate everywhere in Kristiansund.

Unfortunately, on the first day we did not eat at the hotel restaurant, because it was closed. In our opinion, the restaurant should be open every day. However, it is easy to find nice dishes in the surroundings. In addition, the bathroom was slightly dirty, but still well usable.
