So comfy and convenient, can't wait to stay at The Hawthorne again on our future trips to Salem! Loved having the two bathrooms! The hotel was walking distance to everything we wanted to do and having parking was extremely convenient. The delicious complementary lemonade in the lobby was a very nice touch and the beds and linens made for a very restful sleep. Our windows faced the Salem Commons and the Salem Witch Museum. The glow of red at night from the museum was a nice aesthetic when looking out the window.

No complaints at all. Everything exceeded our expectations.

The room was tiny, but perfect, with room for our dog's little bed. Our dog was happy. Our view of the common park, the statue of founder Roger Conant, and a church converted to a witch museum was delightful! We loved the "Do not disturb... I'm still reading The Scarlet Letter" door signs. Loved the Gerrymander display in the lobby, the embroidered H logo on the pillows reminiscent of Hester Prynne's proud embroidery. Staff and guests were kind and welcoming to our little dog Sweetie Pie. Proximity to harbor and the Peabody Essex Museum was ideal.

The luggage cart had a flat tire which made bringing in the suitcases in the rain a challenge.

The location of the hotel, the hotel itself was beautiful. The 2 dinning areas where wonderful. Food was fantastic. The employees where very efficient and friendly. However our room, had a very small bathroom. If we where people who where larger in size, we would not be able to fit , or turn around in the bathroom. And the shower was on the other side of the room. I'm sure not all rooms are set up like this. I would definitely stay at the hotel again.

The whole experience was great. Front desk staff upon check-in was helpful and courteous. They were accommodating and fast when we realized our take out had no silverware. They provided a mini fridge at no extra expense. The room was cozy and clean. The hallways smell of soap (reminds my of my grandmother's soap... fresh and clean). All staff was friendly; front desk, maintenance, housekeeping, waitstaff. Made reservations for Nathanials in the hotel. Was promptly seated and served. Tables were a little small (but I'm big as is my family). Coffee was great (plus since I'm a coffee lover) and food was tasty and good proportions. Only issue with my food was my eggs were a little overcooked when I asked for runny. However, it was flavored great. Enjoyed the real butter on my toast - none of that fake butter! Beds were comfy as were the blankets. Bathroom is a little snug, but the style is true to the history. Room came with desk, iron and hair dryer. Loved the closet area for hanging clothes and placing my luggage. The location can't be beat! Right in the middle near everything! Prices are worth it... definitely get a bang for your buck! This was my second stay at the Hawthorne and I will be coming back!

Everything was great.

The location was perfect for my trip. I didn't want to bother with renting a car and the location was perfect for seeing the sites on foot. From the hotel I easily walked out to Winter Island, The House of the Seven Gables, the Howard Street cemetery, the wharf, and all the other things one might want to do. The staff was so friendly and helpful. Coffee and tea in the lobby in the morning. Room was just the right size for two. A lovely view of the Green. The bathroom was small, but clean and a window! Nice big TV with plenty of channels for afternoon relaxing time I would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is old so be prepared for noise from the hallways to bleed in. I didn't find it horrible, but some people might not like that. The biggest problem for me was the lack of a coffee pot in the room. I appreciated the coffee in the lobby, but having to get dressed and go down for coffee was a little inconvenient. The price point seems high, but the hotel is downtown, beautifully appointed, lovely staff... It's probably worth it. Just be prepared that this is not a shiny new hotel with super modern amenities. I'd rather enjoy a historic hotel over a shiny commercial chain any day.

The room was insanely large. I have never been in a room so big. It had 2 walk in closets. 2 queen size beds. a sitting area. This room was just bigger then I had ever seen a hotel room be. We liked the large room, the quite hotel, the pet friendly floor, the fact everything was in 2 minutes of walking out the door of the hotel. The food was good, serve friendly.

The down side was we where on the top floor (6ths) and the elevator was small and squeezed loudly. It freaked me and my daughter out. (but I hate elevators anyhow) We took the stairs a lot, but that let us find the room Mark Twin had stayed in. The room was also either crazy hot to the point we where sweating or super cold. The bathroom was small and the smallest room One of the closets seemed bigger (my daughter took to changing in the closet over the bathroom.) IT remained cold no matter what we did, taking a bath was out cause it was too cold. The beds where hard as rocks. My husband took to the floor over the bed.

I liked the old historic feel of the hotel and the spice smell in the lobby. I liked the sanitation stations everywhere. Room service was quick and delicious. Location was great!

The room was very small with no fridge, mini bar, or coffee maker. The room wasn't vacuumed properly when i first entered the room and there were tons of blonde hair all over the carpet from previous person. One day my room was not made up even though i did not have the dnd on the door. Also, wish that i could adjust temperature in the room.

This is a cool hotel, great location, beautiful lobby, and a step back to yesteryear feel. The room we stayed in has a separate shower from the sink/toilet. They are VERY small, but they add to the "1930's" feel of the vibe. The beds were comfortable, bathrooms clean, and we had a great night's rest. Within walking distance of most everything we wanted to see in Salem! The staff was also helpful and courteous.

What makes this "retro" also makes it a bit "tight" room-wise. The sink/toilet area is smaller than our travel trailer. The HVAC system is tied to a building-wide system that provides either "heat" or "Cooling/AC" -- so whatever the season choice the Maintenance team is running the system on is what you get. Summer/Fall seasonal transition means if the AC is still on and temps drop, you'll have no heat...and vice versa. Not ideal compared to the modern convenience to adjust cooling or heating as desired in newer facilities.

The hotel is beautifully appointed, perfectly located, and staffed with consummate professionals! The Hawthorne has managed to update to modern comfort while maintaining its historic elegance. Many rooms are expanded from the original hotel and have a bath and a half, making it extremely convenient. Located only steps from the modern pagan shops of Essex Street, several local Museums, historic Salem, and countless restaurants and attractions, this hotel is perfectly located for many visitors. We parked the car on arrival and did not move it until check out. The staff are helpful and kind, but not over your shoulder. We come to Salem often, and will be staying here again, for sure!

The listing indicated breakfast was included and it clearly was not. Not a big deal, as the hotel had many options from the decadent to budget-friendly. However, this should have been clear on bookings.com.

I loved the ambiance and the history of the hotel

I had to learn more about my options from the restaurant wait staff than the front desk who checked me in. For instance they did not tell me I had to “request” a mini fridge (which is automatically given at lesser hotels) and they do not have coffee makers in the room. they knew 3 women were staying there and the cleaning service kept leaving only two towels each morning - making us have to ask each and every day for additional towels. not once did the front desk offer to make dinner recommendations or reservations (which would’ve been helpful). great ambiance, lacking in amenities and basic customer service
