Mission Bell Motel

We were pleasantly surprised that the 2nd bed was in an ajoining room and there was also a complete kitchen with full size refrigerator, stove, oven, sink and microwave in a separate room. This room was like a little apartment for less than most basic rooms. . nearby. We really enjoyed our stay.

It could have been cleaner.

OMG. McConnell's Ice Cream is at the front of the motel!!!! That alone made me happy (Do a search on this business and you'll know why). About the lodging: I thought this was a very good value for the price and for my needs. It was simple, roomy, clean. The trees and flowers on the grounds were well kept and the owners who run it were very nice. It is a humble place, but if you care more for space, cleanliness, comfort and nice staff than you care for designer-coordinated, new rooms, it will more than do the trick. It is bigger than most motel rooms if you get the kitchenette with two double beds. The kitchenette: This isn't some dinky little corner of the room with a bar-sink-microwave-under-the-counter-dorm-fridge set up. The kitchenette is a separate room; there is a full-size refrigerator, a small four-burner GAS stove!!! And a full-size sink, with a full-sized microwave, plus a small round table and two chairs for dining. No sitting on the edge of your bed and eating with your plate on the nightstand. The management will bring you a basket with plates, utensils, pans, dishtowel, ish soap, etc. if you call and ask for the things you need for the kitchen. It is clearly an old property, possibly from the 1940s, so the walls are thick and you have more privacy than if you are in a newer place. If you like places in the heart of town, this is not your place, because it's on the edge of even the motel district. If you like tastefully decorated rooms, this is not your place. There are room-darkening curtains that are worn, bedspreads that are old and generic prints on the walls. Do not mistake old for not clean. The bathroom had a large showerhead, which I appreciated, and newer tile had been installed, plus a full-sized mirrored medicine cabinet where you could put all your toiletries without balancing them on the little sink vanity. If you interact with the management in a civil, cordial way, you will see they are old school and old world.

I can't really complain. I place this motel in a different category from chain-run franchises that are uniform. I chose it because of that, and because of others' comments. Because the lodging is inexpensive, it's clear that some clientele are families who are down on their luck. I've stayed in places like this all over the state, and the people I met staying here were pleasant. And, because marijuana use is legal in California, we did smell a whiff of weed being smoked every now and then.

The owner and his wife were very friendly and accomodating. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were nice and soft. It's an older motor court that could use some renovations, but the room and grounds are very clean and well kept.
