It was our first time staying in the Scottish Borders, the location The Black Bull Hotel Lauder was fantastic, full of history and character . We couldn't have asked for more, fabulous staff, we were made to feel at home, great variety of menus. Our stay was for 5 nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend which coincided with the annual LAUDER COMMON RIDING WEEK 2023 event, creating a great buzz in the town and it was really decked out for the occasion. We would highly recommend The Black Bull to friends and family as a 1st class location to stay, you won't be disappointed.

Wow, what a find! A fantastic hotel in the small market town of Lauder in the Scottish Borders. The main hotel is wonderfully decorated and presented to a very high standard making for a friendly and relaxing environment. The food in the main restaurant was very, very good and the breakfast the following morning was just about perfect. We stayed in the triple room which is located in the courtyard and offers additional privacy if you don’t want to stay in the main hotel. This is its own self-contained accommodation with separate double and single bedrooms which is perfect for 3 adults or 2 adults travelling with a child. The beds are so comfy that a good night’s sleep is all but guaranteed. This is one of those rare hotels that will make it on to the ‘visit again’ list and cannot be recommended highly enough.

Comfortable large bed. Luxury towels. Location. Quiet. Room perfect. Tea/coffee facilities in room. Huge bath and shower unit in large ensuite. Toiletries supplied. Staff all delightful. Food was great tasting and portions plentiful. Daily housekeeping......not really necessary for a 2 or 3 night stay. With super linen and towels, your laundry bills must be huge! If daily housekeeping was as requested, maybe a later checkout would be possible. That said, 1st class attention to room cleanliness can't be faulted. Well done on that area. Certainly stay again. Ample on street parking and hotel has a car park too. Quiet village with local shops, bars etc.

10 am checkout.

We were sceptical when we arrived as the outside was not great, but as soon as we walked inside we were blown away. What a beautiful place. The manager worked his socks off, he was everywhere all the time. He took us to our room which was lovely; very modern and comfortable. The furniture is superb. The bathroom was huge and very modern. The room was warm and very clean, there was even very nice mugs and glasses on the tea tray. Everywhere in the bar and restaurant there is beautiful handmade wooden furniture. The whole staff were very attentive. We were totally thrilled with the whole place and if we were ever in that area again, we would definitely stay there again.

Everything was great.

Beautifully appointed throughout, lovely comfy bed and bedding, big fluffy towels, super friendly helpful staff and great food for dinner and breakfast. We followed one of the short walks from the downloadable booklet on the hotel website which topped off our stay.

A tiny thing but proper espresso/cappuccino for breakfast would have been lovely rather than filter coffee. Plus where we were placed for breakfast felt a bit like we were in the lobby and there appeared to be space in the main dining room. So really not much to complain about!

Good location beautiful room high quality linen, furniture, bedding, massive fluffy towels, excellent menu, exceptionally clean, staff were very pleasant and helpful

The only tiny tiny things we would of liked were more sockets near beds (cpap machine), socket near mirror for drying hair or mirror near a socket, the heating went off early in room bar was lovley relaxing and warm but shut up early during our stay and room was cool by 9pm, marmite or peanut butter/savoury spread option for toast as I said tiny mostly personal preferences had a really comfortable nights sleep bed was amazing quality would highly recommend and will be back ☺️

Everything! The hotel was exceptional. The welcome we had from the staff was amazing, the room and bathroom were both fantastic. We unfortunately arrived too late to dine in the restaurant, however we were able to bring in some food from the local take-away and eat it in the restaurant, Mandy brought us cutlery and drinks and made sure we were accommodated. The breakfast was lovely, and such great value. Before we left we had a small tour of the hotel from the owner who as very friendly! I was gutted that I hadn't booked in a second nights stay. Would definitely like to go back.

Location was in central Lauder, but our room was at the back of the property, so was very quiet. We didn’t have a view as we had a velux window in the ceiling, but it was fine. The room was furnished and decorated to a very high standard and the bathroom was excellent. The shower was a huge, walk in shower and had a wonderful rainfall head as well as a normal one. We ate an evening meal here as well as breakfast. Both were very nice. We were there on a Sunday evening, when they do various roast dinner options. The roast beef dinner was cooked and presented very nicely on a huge Yorkshire pudding. The staff were all incredibly helpful and friendly, we would definitely go back again if we needed an overnight stay in the area.

The location was perfect for an overnight stay on a journey from Edinburgh airport to Newcastle. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Good off road parking at the rear of the hotel. The room was warm and comfortable, the bed was perfect and high quality furnishings made for a great nights sleep. The bathroom was very well presented clean bright and finished to a high standard. The towels provided were fluffy and generous. Breakfast was of a good standard in terms of quality and quantity.

We felt a little more attention to detail was needed. The toast was presented on a plate and would have been better served in a toast rack, keeping it crisp. Likewise side plates for the toast would have been nice. A fresh refill of coffee would have a great gesture.

I am a retired professional chef and hotel manager for Hyatt hotels and rarely am I so impressed with a facility to the degree that I am with the Black Bull. If the opportunity presents itself you must stay here and will not be disappointed whatsoever.

Quite honestly the only recommendation of improvement would be a larger television in the room.
