The continental breakfast that I had was superb with "proper fresh fruit salad" and greek yoghurt available rather than the usual cheaper offerings. My husband chose the full English and remarked he thought it was the best he'd ever had at a hotel. All the staff were very friendly and probably the most care I've seen anywhere was taken to make us feel Covid safe. My comments are genuine in that we came to Canterbury straight from an overnight stay at the Leeds Castle Maiden Tower B & B and Castlegate left them standing in every-way other than the obvius very large bedrooms & bathrooms at Leeds Castle. The parking arrangement worked very well.

Nothing could be done about this but we did hear a lot of noise from the floor boards in the room above but when we popped up to speak to them it was a lot better so I think they were just heavy footed people. It's an old building and it creaks but that is part of the charm.

It’s was spotlessly clean, the staff were all very nice and welcoming, the breakfast was lovely and hot, the only downside was the bed wasn’t very big, also maybe blackout curtains as we were in the barn and although there was a blind, the light from the cathedral although stunning to look at, it shone in through the gaps at the edges of the blind, so unfortunately I didn’t get much sleep as I need total darkness to get to sleep. I let them know in advance that it was our anniversary and we were given a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival. The cold fresh water in the reception area was a nice touch too.

Too light in the room at night due to cathedral lights on all night, could do with blackout curtains

The staff were very friendly & attentive. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We were staying as a treat for my wifes birthday. Prior to our arrival, I'd messaged & requested that a bottle of sparkling wine be left in our room, ready for our return from the Marlowe. This was done for me at the time requested & was a very tasty, English sparkling wine. The hotel was very clean & comfortable. The location of the hotel is fantastic, pretty much in the centre & walking distance of everything you need. We loved the age & history of the property. It is a very quirky & characteristic building, right next to the cathedral. We had a fantastic stay.

The only very slight thing that I would have changed was with the breakfast. We upgraded to the full English, which was delicious, and we had brought to our room. The breakfast tray came with 2 pots of coffee, which we don't drink, but there are tea making facilities in the room. It also would have been nice to be offered some fruit juice. These are the only 2 very small picky things I'd mention. That being said, I'm sure that the staff would have brought us fruit juice if we'd requested it.

The staff were very accommodating and easy to talk to. They took an interest in you and your stay, making recommendations and asking how visits to places went. They are the people that made this hotel from good to great. Particular nods to Monica at reception and Rob (Senior) at Breakfast. The room was comfortable with views of the Cathedral. Bed was good woke up feeling good. Breakfast was good with pleasant customer service. Chilled water at reception was handy to refill water bottles as and when needed, particularly when heading out during a hot weekend. Location was perfect adjacent to the Cathedral entrance and within 5 minutes walking distance to many of Canterbury's tourist sites.

Couldn't see any plug sockets by the bed for charging devices and getting to the room was a bit maze-like, but I put this down to the age of the building rather than something the hotel has created. For anyone with accessibility concerns, do take this into consideration if looking to book this place.

Location, ability to get our own water when we wanted it, the little and private terrace with view of Cathedral and ability to have a Prosecco there before dinner and our morning coffee, and helpfulness of staff.

Our bathroom was poorly equipped - tiny and nowhere to put toiletries etc. Easy to add a little shelf in shower so one doesn’t have to stoop to floor to get shampoo etc, and a shelf to put a toothbrush etc, and a hook for hand-towel. Also, a couple of hooks in the room itself to hang clothes would improve the room (the Barn) as there is nowhere to hang any clothes.

Unbeatable central position with lovely views of the cathedral from the premises (10mins walk from train stations). Although it is close to every amenity in the night is quiet. Mattress very comfy. Every room is provided with kettle and a good range of teas, coffe and chocolate. The building is crazy old but very well kept and clean. Being the fusions of few adjacent houses the floorplan is quirky and unique. The staff is very nice and attentive. The continental breakfast included fresh fruit salad, yogurt of your choice warm croissant and toast with a good selection of jams and marmalades. It is served in a very pretty room with bay windows facing the square. There s also a water station where you can fill bottles with filtered sparkling and still water. There is also a bar.

Nothing. I would strongly reccomend! It is not a luxury boutique hotel but it has definetly exceeded our expectations

The continental breakfast was lovely and also brought to our room. The staff were amazing. Thank you. So comfy and relaxing. A fantastic location.

The noise from other guests was loud. Snoring and talking etc but it didn’t bother my sister and I. The kettle just about fits in the sink to fill up, but you can take bottles of water to your room from the reception area. We had quite a lot of stairs, but they took out bags up to the room and informed us we should have rang down before we left and somebody would have collected them for us. We had a fabulous time. These are just little niggles. Real butter with breakfast which we love. Perhaps some cold drinks such as OJ. Thank you very much. X

good continental breakfast, made with homemade fresh fruit salad and warmed croissants, real Greek yogurt. Comfortable bed. Lovely view of the cathedral from the passage to our room. Quiet road outside.

Steep set of stairs from the front door to reception (about 14) and then several flights of steps/stairs to the room (very old building is lovely but this was too much for us), including outdoors section across a fire escape to reach the building containing our rooms. Luckily it didn't rain. The tiny shower was hard to cope with and similarly the toilet in another small room, no toilet paper holder (unhygienic having to handle the roll each time) . Paper cups (2) for hot drinks and two flimsy plastic cups for cold water which were not renewed on the second day. Being a very old building, walls are paper thin - so you are given free ear plugs! Very small TV and no Netflix.

Location could not be bettered - right next door to the Cathedral. Beautiful historic building with roof terrace overlooking the Cathedral. Charmingly eccentric internal layout with, low ceilings, sloping floors and steps and no lift (absolutely fine for the able bodied). Bright airy breakfast room, with bay windows overlooking the picturesque Buttermarket. Outstanding breakfast, served by friendly and attentive staff. On check in we obtained our discounted City parking passes - which work not just in Canterbury, but in nearby Whitstable too.

It sounds grudging to say so, but - accepting that it was a 600 year old listed building - there was no aircon. However, each room was equipped with a large portable floor fan which kept the room temperature down during the heat wave we were experiencing. The many, many benefits more than compensated for this minor inconvenience. The price you pay for such a beautiful historic building right in the City Centre.

The hotel was beautiful and quaint. It was perfectly located for exploring Canterbury. Our room was nice and spacious with a good view and a comfortable bed. The breakfast provided the next day was varied and generous in quantity. I especially want to thank Monica who oversaw our stay. After informing her that we were recently engaged, she went the extra mile in arranging romantic touches for the room, providing recommendations for exploring the area, and generally making us feel very welcome and relaxed. Thank you so much, Monica!

Nothing to note.
